About
Anaga is a highland of mountains with sharp peaks and deep ravines covered with carpets of laurel trees (also called laurisilva) and dotted with charming hamlets. Exploring Anaga is a journey to a place that has an authentic rural flavour, a journey back in time to when the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings was much stronger. Discover this little paradise with your knowledgeable local guide in a small group.

What to expect
  • From La Laguna we will take the public bus to reach the starting point of our hike. We hike on forest trails through Anaga Rural Park, where you will see the scenery and the way of life of this naturally isolated area. Its mountains are volcanic, formed by an eruption about 7 to 9 million years ago. It is now both a protected rural park and an UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve. The area is home to mammoth plants which don’t exist anywhere else on the planet. A diversified wildlife including more than 120 local endemic species. Some of the best examples of the Canary Islands' ecosystems are to be found among the natural habitats in Anaga. Laurel trees loads of moss, lichen and lianas will make you feel like you are exploring somewhere far more exotic than Tenerife! The area is also a haven for birds and butterflies. As the oldest part of the island of Tenerife, Anaga has so much to offer those seeking to get off the beaten track. We will pass close to an indigenous hamlet where the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife lived. We will return by public bus to the central bus station in La Laguna.

Dear Andrew, thank you very much for your motivating comment. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed our tailored tour through the Biosphere Reserve of Anaga. We wanted to do some hiking in the more remote corners of the island of Tenerife during our holiday, but were a bit nervous about getting lost, missing buses and generally being too stressed to enjoy the walks. Luckily we found Sergio, who is great: a qualified mountain guide who speaks several languages fluently. We went on two walks with him: one to La Caldera, near La Orotava and one into the Anaga. For both days, Sergio gave us clear instructions on the phone about where to meet and what to bring, including telling us about bus times - all this information was reiterated in WhatsApp messages. During the walks he helped with technique, gave us lots of information about plants, geology and history of Tenerife, and was really good company. Would definitely recommend.

Dear Lynda and Bob, thank you very much for your nice comments about my work. I take care of the well-being of my guests right from the start, including organization and logistics, so that they can fully enjoy their day. So I am happy to hear I am doing it right! It was nice to meet you both and I hope we will have more opportunities to walk together in the near future. Best regards from your guide, Sergio

Great hike! Highly recommended
Nov 2019
We enjoyed a great hike up in the mountains in the north of Tenerife, with Sergio and his charming wife Karin. Starting out from La Laguna by bus the day didn’t look so promising as it was wet and foggy, but by the time we reached Las Carbonaras at lunchtime it was full sunshine. By then we had enjoyed a perfect hike through the laurel forest out into open country and even a glass of local wine en route (thanks, Tina!) which was an unexpected bonus. Sergio is a lively and knowledgeable guide, with a lovely sense of humour, and an ability to connect with everyone he meets. If you want to hike in a small group then we would highly recommend him and hope to hike with him again in another part of the island in the future

Dear Geoff and Helen, thank you very much for your comments about our hike together. It was a real pleasure for me to show you "my lost paradise of Anaga" in company with my wife. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the day, despite rain and fog during the first part. But as you came perfectly prepared with raincoat and good footwear it was no problem to hike downhill through the evergreen laurel forest. We spent a beautiful day with you two and hope we will meet again on your next visit to Tenerife. Have a good time in La Orotava and in the sunny south and a safe trip home to Manchester. With best regards, Sergio
