Checking off the medieval city of Girona and villages of Costa Brava in a day from Barcelona is a big ask if you're doing it independently. This tour lets you scratch both off your list with no transportation worries—whisking you to Girona and two other historical towns you might otherwise easily miss. Plus, there’s a guide to bring the sights to life and an opportunity to swim at a Costa Brava cove.

  • Free time at each stop, including the chance to eat and swim at Palafrugells
  • No transportation hassles—all travel by air-conditioned minivan or coach
What to expect
  • Board an air-conditioned vehicle in central Barcelona, and travel through the picturesque Catalan countryside to Girona. Learn about the city’s long past from your guide, and on arrival, enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town. See the 11th-century Cathedral and Roman-era walls, and get free time to stroll independently. Continue to Pals, a cobbled town coiled beneath the remains of a castle and, after an introductory tour, enjoy free time to explore. Then, pass Begur’s medieval castle on route to the Costa Brava seaside village of Calella de Palafrugell, famous for its rugged coves. Get free time for lunch (own expense) or to relax, perhaps choosing to swim from a cove or stroll around the clifftop Cap Roig botanical gardens (own expense). After reconvening at a pre-arranged time, your tour finishes at the original starting point in Barcelona.

This tour is wonderful. These towns we visited are quite different so you will get good overview about Catalonia. Our guide Rod was very informative and helpful, thank you! There are nice lunch opportunities in Calella and you can just walk and admire the coastline. Girona is very colourful and interesting town with a bridge by Gustave Eiffel and Pals looks like directly from history.

The locations in Catalonia will truly beautiful and a good selection to visit during our trip to Barcelona. However, the real magic we experienced was due entirely to our exceptional guide, Rod. He leant color and context to everything we saw with his stories and historical perspective. He is a magnificent resource for the history and culture of the Catalonian geography and people. His enthusiasm imbued us with excitement and wonder as we anticipated the next experience along the way. He meticulously prepared for the trip and freely shared both his personal experience and knowledge about the towns, the people and their history. He is absolutely the best guide we have had over 20 years and more than forty countries we have visited. He made us want to extend our visit and return to another tour with him. We will return specifically to share his knowledge and enthusiasm on another tour.

This was our favorite experience during our vacation in Barcelona. We really enjoyed our time in Girona and Costa Brava. The views were unbelievable and the food was amazing! Our tour guide Sergio was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. The tour was only 8 people so it felt very intimate. Would highly recommend booking this tour.

Sergio was a wonderful tour guide. He was friendly and full of interesting facts about Girona, Costa Brava, and Spain in general. He was easy to converse with and kept our little group intrigued throughout the entire trip. I learned so much because of him! The car ride was pleasant as well. He is without a doubt the best tour guide to have on a long day trip! Sergio also takes great photos!

This trip was fantastic. I really enjoyed all three stops - they were quick but there was just enough time at each. I also liked how there was a tour around each of them.

Costa Brava was INCREDIBLE! Bring a bathing suit if it's warm. You'll want it on the beach.

I forget our guide's name but he was truly one of the best. He was super informative, friendly, and always checked to make sure we were good. Left us with lots of recommendations for our (short) free time. Great conversation, too!

My only concern - the trip was advertised as 11 hours, so I booked this one over another. However, this trip was 10 hrs (8:30-6:30). I would have appreciated more time at the stops.

I loved the trip! Perfect for getting out to see more of the country. I love the history and knowledge. My guide Rod was amazing. Knowledge and very tentative. He always made sure we were safe and was very funny. He was very knowledgeable about each place we stopped and answered all the questions we had. Everything was easy for me.

Excellent tour off the beaten path! Our guide was Rod and from the start of the day to the end, he provided an excellent experience. We visited Girona first and enjoyed a walking tour and ample free time. He gave us excellent suggestions on local specialties to try. Next we visited Pals and fell in love with this town from the 900s. While we would have liked a little more time for shopping, the tour was well paced overall. Finally we went to the beach and saw beautiful views and enjoyed this local spot. The beach was one of the most clear and beautiful I have been lucky enough to visit. There was ample time for lunch, shopping or swimming before returning to Barcelona. For me, this tour schedule was ideal with the walking and touring early in the day before the heat and then the chance to swim and relax in the afternoon. If you want a comprehensive, enjoyable and relaxing day outside the city, this it the tour for you!
