What to expect
  • Spend the day exploring the history and winemaking of the region near Barcelona on this 10-hour, small-group excursion. Not only will you have a chance to enjoy the area's spectacular scenery, you'll also gain a newfound appreciation for its religious significance at Montserrat and its many years of winemaking traditions at a local winery. Leave Barcelona at 8:30am for a visit to Montserrat, a monastery that sits amongst the craggy mountains just outside of town. See the complex's famous Royal Basilica, which contains the 12th-century statue of the Black Virgin, a venerated icon. If you visit during the week, you'll also get to hear the angelic singing of La Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest children's choirs in Europe. During your visit you can also stop by the Museum of Monserrat to explore the site's history, or take a ride to the rack railway or cable car for sublime mountain views. During the second half of your day you'll head to Catalonia's Penedes region to learn about the area's vast wine industry. Stop by a winery, where you'll have a chance to view the vast wine cellars and taste some of the wineries' top-notch products.  Your tour ends back in Barcelona at around 7pm.

Did not feel the guide was knowledgeable about Montserrat. I was left with uncomfortable feeling on how a favor he offered to do cost us $50 euros?

Our guide took a small group of 6 people to Montserrat explaining its history along the way. Once there we were free to explore on our own. Unfortunately the boys choir was on holiday so we couldn’t hear them. But we took a funicular to the top of the mountain, hiked to a chapel and of course toured the basilica and saw the Black Madonna. Then we drove to a winery. This very informative tour included going into the wine caves and tasting cava. A lovely day!

This tour is amazing! Montserrat is definitely a must do and worth a visit. We were lucky to have our tourguide Sergio to ourselves, who was super nice and told us everything we need to know about Montserrat itself and the monastery. We were able to explore the area for a few hours, which gave us enough time to hike up to the top! And how do you end a tour best? With amazing wine from the family owned vineyard Parés Balta! We got a little tour here as well where we got told how you create an organic wine with biodynamic values. Our tipp: Also try the selfmade Extra Virgin olive oil during the wine tasting!
Thanks again for everything Sergio, we had a blast! Best, Annika & Andrés

Coming to Spain for both mine and my mother's birthday, we wanted to do a special tour to celebrate. Finding the Monsterrat + Winery tour was the best decision of the entire trip!
Fortunately, the third person on the tour didn't show up so we, had a private tour.

The view from the top of the monastery in Montserrat took our breath away. Imagine eating fresh farmer's cheese and drinking wine with the most amazing scenic mountain view before your feet. No words could describe the spirituality of the Monastery and the Black Madonna.
After our ethereal experience in Montserrat, we went to a Cava family-owned winery. It was absolutely delicious. The view of the winery at sunset was the most magical end to the best day ever.

But of course, none of this would have ever been possible without the best tour guide that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Rodrigo was not only knowledgable, but he was also engaging, and caring, listening to all of our questions and making sure that we were enjoying ourselves every single moment of the tour. His professionalism is paralleled. We were so blessed to have him lead our tour because he truly made the experience absolutely indescribable. We want to thank him from the heart for this memorable day.

Thank you Explore Catalunya, and especially Rodrigo for the best birthday present ever!

we scheduled this tour months in advance and were put in the absolutely best group with Xavi who is a clever comedian with insightful comments. his dialogue remained with us through our entire time in Catalonia and the Basque country. The views and sights in this area are impressive but it is disappointing it is nearly impossible to get to see the boy's choir sing since people stake out the spots hours ahead. they should have a lottery or have ability to buy your way in. this is a must for anyone going to this area of Spain

Very calm and serene environment; helps to relax and unwind as the whole place is built around this monastery which adds to the meditative atmosphere.
Nice hiking paths, so carry good shoes and a stick.
Possibility of going off the trial due to lack of enough direction signs .

This was a beautiful experience! Our tour guide, Nicolau was phenomenal. His initial greeting was so warm & friendly, we felt comfortable immediately. He also has a wealth of knowledge that he shared with us on the drive up to the mountains. Once we got to the mountain, he helped us get acquainted with the area - gave us historical tidbits & perfect directions to catch the best views before he let us off to our own devices for a few hours. My fiancee and I got ENGAGED on this tour it was so beautiful!

I absolutely recommend this to anyone interested.

My wife and I had an excellent tour of Montserrat and Pares Balta Winery during our visit to Barcelona. As there were only 7 of us on the tour, the tour guide, who was also the driver of the minivan, gave us a lot of attention and everyone felt at ease asking questions along the way. We really enjoyed our tour of the Montserrat Monastery. We also heard the oldest boys choir sing at the Basilica. The tour of Pares Balta Winery was also very personalized in our small group and we very much enjoyed the tour and Cava and wine tasting.
