Highlights
  • A small-group tour enables the guide to personalize the trip to suit the group
  • Travel by minivan and train, with a guide to narrate the journey
  • Choose a hike (or alternate activity) to fit your interests and fitness level
What to expect
  • Put on warm clothes and sturdy walking shoes, and meet your guide and the rest of your small group in central Barcelona. Hop inside your air-conditioned minivan and journey into the countryside on route to the Pyrenees. As you travel, hear tales of the region’s history from your guide and pass Montseny Natural Park, a protected region of mountains, forests and high moors. After roughly an hour, make your first stop in the quaint market town of Vic. Enjoy free time for breakfast (own expense) or to explore the medieval center, with its picturesque market square, cathedral and Romanesque and neoclassical buildings. Back aboard your minivan, continue to the stone-built mountain village of Queralbs; the last point on your route accessible by road. Leave the minivan, and accompanied by your guide, ride the rack railway up to the Nuria Valley. Home to a lake and bright green pastures ringed by high peaks, this picturebook valley is one of the most beautiful in the Pyrenees. Admire the scenery from the train, and on arrival, enjoy several hours to explore as you wish. Perhaps follow your choice of the hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels, such as the paths up to the Valley Coma de Vaca. Although a good physical fitness is not a prerequisite of this tour, a reasonable level is required if you wish to take the Coma de Vaca trails. Alternatively, take your pick from the local activities (own expense) such as horseriding or boating, or enjoy a meal (own expense) at one of the traditional Catalan restaurants. See the Itinerary for details of the activities available. When the time comes, return to Barcelona where your trip ends at the start point.  Please note: Annual track maintenance on the rack railway from Queralbs means that the line is closed between Mondays and Fridays from November 1 to November 30. On these days, the tour will run to an alternative itinerary that involves accessing the mountain valleys by road or hiking at a lower height. These changes will in no way take away from your Pyrenees experience.

Our driver/tour guide was Arnold, who was approachable, accomodating, and knowledgeable. It was a long day - we departed from Barcelona at around 8.30am, and returned at around 7.15pm - but the tour was well run, and we enjoyed ourselves very much. There were 6 of us, and the mini van was comfortable.

We only had 6 nights in Barcelona, but we really wanted to visit the Pyrenees even though it was winter, and were glad that we did. The experience was not similar to Montserrat (a must-see). First stop was Vic, a quaint little town - we had about 45 mins to have breakfast. It was really cold at Vic in the morning - I think 3 degs or below when we were there - so be sure to keep yourselves warm. We liked Queralbs for its stone buildings - had an hour or so there. Vall de Núria was beautiful in winter (although I suppose it would be even more so in summer) - we didnt have much time there as our rack railway ride was delayed due to traffic on the way there, but we still managed to explore the area a little and take pictures. Overall an enjoyable day tour.

Excellent trip to Pyrenees on 26 June 2021, our guide was professional, friendly, had great language skills and in-depth knowledge of Catalunya. He provided interesting history / background on each place we visited and excellent advice on hikes and side trips of interest during free time. Our group included people with a range of hiking abilities and the guide was able accommodate each with suitable agendas to keep everyone happy. I Highly recommend this trip and Explore Catalunya.
COVID control measures in effect at the time were well followed and everyone felt safe.

This company was very professional and Anna (our tour guide and driver) gave us opportunities to choose how we wanted to spend the day. We saw two old small villages (Vic and Queralbs) and got to see the snowcapped village of Vall de Nuria. Most of our time was spent in Vall de Nuria, as members of our group wanted to do some hiking. The real question is it going to be worth the effort (basically 3 plus hours round trip to and from Barcelona). I would say yes but that is because we were here for 5 days. Anna was very nice and provided us with a lot of history/color.

So again the question is how much time do you have. There is so much to do in Barcelona, but we wanted to see the Pyrenees.

We visited Vic, Vall De Núria, and Queralbs. Loved the places. Vic has a market place saturdays. We bought fresh cheese and fruits. Our kids experienced snow activities in Vall de Núria, and Queralbs is a magical place that you only see in movies. Our tour guide Sergio was extremely nice and knowledgeable of all the area. Please ask for his assistance. This tour is highly recommended.

This is a well planned day trip to the mountains, including visits to Vic and Queralbs. I am a huge mountain lover! But I'm also an art, architecture and heritage lover. So it was a perfect blend, to treat myself this solo day trip on my birthday. It was made more special by our wonderful guide, Jordi. Got to learn many new things about Catalunya's history and culture. Jordi's knowledge about art history and expertise in the field is commendable. He was personable, enthusiastic and made us all feel comfortable throughout. The drive to and fro was pretty smooth. It was very sensible to have the first stop at Vic in the morning, since it's quieter especially in the old town. The visit to the stone village at Queralbs was another experience of solitude. It's a bit ironic to find these towns and villages more quieter & peaceful than what you see when you enter Núria valley. However there's enough time to find your own peaceful spot, go on small trails, and take in the magnificence of nature. There wasn't a lot of snow, but the scenes were spectacular. In all, it was a wonderful experience of a small group guided tour. Our group was quite international, and it was great to meet new people on my solo trip. Also, the amazing Jordi! Guides who are so passionate about their work deserve to be applauded. Thank you Explore Catalunya! And thanks a lot Jordi for making it special!

My husband and I took our 3 Children (18-23) to Barcelona for the first time for the Christmas holiday. What a wonderful time to visit Barcelona. The temp was 55 degrees with sunny skies. We took this tour with our wonderful guide Cam. We traveled in a comfortable mini bus with a group of 20 nice people. (I would recommend to sit anywhere but the back row). Cam was very knowledgeable about the region, it’s history and customs. He shared his love for Catalonia with us with humor and interesting information. He has an easy personality and very enjoyable to listen to. Definitely wear good walking shoes with good traction especially this time of year to hike thru the snow and ice in the beautiful Nuria Valley. Our last stop Cam took us to was an incredibly quaint mideval village with architecture dating back to 900. This is a beautiful trip. Take it if you get a chance. Thanks Cam

I had a great day in this tour. It was good to get out of the city and see the other towns around. There is time to explore, sight see, and experience each stop.
Our tour guide Gloria was fantastic, she was energetic, knowledgeable, and kept everyone on time. Our bus driver, Toni, was great too! He was helpful and punctual also.
