About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- sondras3700 contributionsGood, But Could Have Been MoreThere was a small group with the guide, a young woman who has obviously studied the subject. The tour was lovely and informative, but I also thought that Ona wasn't always on topic. She'd just chat for periods of time. I'm not sure if there just wasn't enough to fill the 3 hours, or if she was perhaps bored of leading this tour. Despite that, she did show us interesting points about the Jewish Quarter, The Call, and amplified what we could learn at the museum. I wish there had been a bit more about the colorful houses along the river, the history of the city itself, and the Eiffel Bridge that was unfortunately covered with a sports team's banners while we were there. I'm seeing online that there are eleven bridges in Girona. She didn't speak of this at all. And I didn't learn that the bridge we saw was the Eiffel Bridge from her, but rather from another tourist. The tour was enjoyable and informative, but could have been more.Written 26 October 2024
- mattaC6885ZD0 contributionsHighly recommendOna is a very knowledgeable and personable guide. The tour was very informative and conducted in a casual manner with lots of tips on what to do and see in the region. A stark contrast to all the other huge group tours that were starting in the same place.Written 23 October 2024

Last September we took an Azamara cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona. Among the ports we were to stop at was one called Palamos, Spain, a town we had never heard of. On further research, I determined that Palamos itself did not offer much of interest but it was close to Girona which was a medieval center of Jewish culture which is interesting to both my wife and I. On further investigation, I also discovered that Girona was a filming site for Game of Thrones, another of our interests. I determined to find a tour company that would a) pick us up and return us to our ship and b) offer a combined Jewish and GOT tour. This was not an easy task. After two weeks of failure, an agent at Viator suggested that I get in touch with a small tour company, Girona Experience.
My contact with Girona Experience was excellent. Not only did they pick us up and return us to the ship on time but the tour was tremendous and combined items of the Jewish history and culture of the Girona and Besalu area with a tour of the filming sites of Game of Thrones. Our guide, Ted, even had screen shots from the show to illustrate how the buildings etc. had been used and altered with CGI techniques to create the effects for the show.
Two extra pluses with Girona Experience. Being somewhat foodies, my wife and I did not want to have the usual quick, touristy lunch while in Girona. Carme at Girona Experience sent me a list of suggested restaurants for our lunch before we even left home. I was able to review them on line and picked one, Arros I Peix, for our lunch. Carme made the reservation for us and we had a wonderful lunch at one of Girona's best restaurants.
Second. Toward the end of the day our energy was failing and we were ready to return to our ship. However, there was one more prime sight, the medieval Jewish mikvah or ritual bath in Besalu, remaining to be seen. Since this sight is locked, Carme had arranged to get the keys at 4 p.m. but, at our request, she made a special trip to obtain the keys early so that we could see the sight and then return to the ship.
All in all, both my wife and I were extremely pleased with GIrona Experience and we highly recommend them for their service and knowledge.

Dear Ken, thank you so much for your beautiful words.
We are so happy to know that you and your wife had such a great time with us.
Since we are a really small company we are always opened to personalize the tours as much as the customer wants.
As you could see in one day, Girona is a beautiful city. The city was founded by the Romans more than 2000 years ago and we still preserve some of their buildings. Even if the Romans founded the town, Girona became important during the Middle Age, and in my opinion that's the most beautiful part of the city, the Medieval Girona. In Girona we had one of the most important Jewish communities around the Mediterranean before the year 1492. We have streets in the Old Jewish Quarter that have been preserved for more than 500 years now.
If you mix culture, history, Game of Thrones and excelent cuisine you get Girona :D
What I like the most about the province of Girona is that is still quite unknown and there's always that will surprise you. The largest natural lake in Catalonia, medievall villages that make you travel on time, the largest volcanic region in the Iberian Peninsula, picturesque fishing villages in Costa Brava, the museum of the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in his hometown, Figueres... As a local guide I really enjoy taking people to all these places and share our Girona Experience with them :)
I hope to see you again soon and once again thank you for sharing your experience :)
PD: By the way my name is Marc, not Ted haha :'D

We had a private tour of the old city of Girona, Spain and had a great time. Our tour guide, Mark was excellent. He provided a tremendous amount of history which gave us a greater appreciation for the beautiful city. Mark was able to give us the insight to the sites in the city that were filmed in the Game of Thrones which we all enjoyed. We were fortunate to have met Mark early in the morning so our tour was not croweded and we were able to get many beautiful pictures withour a lot of tourists. We would recommend taking the private tour and highly recommend asking for Mark.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We really appreciate that you enjoyed our Girona and Besalú tour. Both places are full of history and both were very relevant for the Jewish History of this region and Western Mediterranean during the Middle Ages
All the best,
Marc .

My husband and I would start the tour in Girona (where we are staying in a hotel). So if we start in Girona, how long is tour (how many hours)? Thank you!
Written 3 March 2019
The tour is 7 hours. They give you a break of about 1 hour for lunch. Figure 8 hours total time.

My mother and I wish to take this excursion on 23 May. She is 86 and cannot walk long distances or stay on her feet for hours. Can you confirm that this will be a suitable tour please? I see you pick up and drop off at the hotel, and drive to Besalu, but apart from that how much time is spent walking around please? Thank you.

Most of the time is spent walking and there are hills and stairways to negotiate. Perhaps, if you contact them, the tour company can make some suggestions. I found them to be very accommodating and flexible
