About
The Tomàs Mallol Cinema-Collection Museum is a permanent, non-profit institution, open to the public as a space for scientific, cultural and recreational participation of citizens, and at the service of society and its development.
Its origin is found in the acquisition of the Tomás Mallol Collection of cinematographic and pre-cinematographic objects by the City of Girona on January 28, 1994.
Its mission is to favor the understanding and knowledge of the history of the moving image and of the cinema through the conservation, investigation, interpretation and exhibition of various collections, whose objects explain how the images were represented before the cinema and what was the technical process that led to the invention of the cinematograph in 1895.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Arkadi M0 contributionsOutstanding!!!Very cozy and educational place. Been there for more than an hour, and could spend even more. Most exciting pieces of photo and cinema equipment. Some interactive features. Very detailed explanation, and terrific idea with audio guide on your own smartphone. Enjoyed every part of the main exhibit and clearly will try to bring my kids here.Written 23 September 2023
- permia0 contributionsMagic of moving picturesFor over a century they have captured the imagination and entertained people everywhere. Multitudes of great artefacts in this superlative museum give an absorbing history of the evolution of the moving, and before that the still, image. Full credit to Tomàs Mallol, a filmmaker and artist, who dedicated a lifetime to his passion for cinema and moving images and assembled thousands of key items in their marvellous history. From the early days of the 1800s onwards Camera Obscura and analogous image makers intrigued those of the public who were fortunate to come across them. An Edison Phonograph with its megaphone and wax disc illustrates developments in capturing and replaying sounds including the human voice. A further seminal event was in 1878 when the photographer Eadweard Muybridge produced the first series of an animal in motion, utilising 12 adjacent cameras. A plethora of projectors are displayed covering many decades and all documenting progress in the quest for flawless cinemas. In the foyer is a large great sculpture of a mounted array of silver cylindrical boxes traditionally used to store reels of film.Written 5 March 2023
- Alanea K0 contributionsA fun and well done museum.A little gem right on one of the squares which well laid out exhibits and very helpful staff. One of the highlights of our trip.Written 31 January 2023
- Insta_natytravel0 contributionsCinema MuseumIn the museum you can get acquainted with the history of theater and cinema. Here there are such rare exhibits as a camera obscura; the first film projector of the Lumiere brothers, which appeared in the 19th century; as well as optical illusions created with the help of mirrors and the play of light.Written 7 December 2022
- corals4630 contributionsLovely museum worth a visitA really interesting museum. Toilets are on the ground floor though so use them before you go in. Some fun exhibits a good price tooWritten 30 October 2022
- Luke_O_Zade0 contributionsToo Much on displayUnless your doing a BA in film.... you'd be lost on what there are hundreds of cameras and paraphernalia... the interactive pieces were great though... and there was an exhibition of female actresses on the ground floor too.Written 27 December 2019
- kostaevi0 contributionsImpressiveWe visited the Film Museum during our visit in Girona, it was very impressive, you will a lot of historic items and how human create images and first film during the centuries. I was not disappointedWritten 22 December 2019
- Michaelmackle0 contributionsThis is a world-class and stunning exhibitionYou start on the third floor and work your way down to the ground floor with each floor revealing new secrets about the art of cinematography. It is a seamless experience and one that you will never forget. The next tie I'm in Girona this will be the first place I will visit again.Written 28 October 2019
- Trevor R0 contributionsBack to the futureThis museum was a delight to spend two plus hours wandering around the exhibits and slideshows took one back to a time of wonder before the coming of the television. If in Girona take a point of visiting you will not be disappointed.Written 27 August 2019
- hilcee0 contributionsParticularly good on the origins of cinemaWe spent a good couple of hours in this fascinating museum. The route through is well designed and the exhibits are imaginatively displayed with many fun interactive aspects. The museum explores human beings’ fascination with shadows, light and images, and showing the contraptions and techniques that have captured them through time. The only let down was in the final room, where clips and posters of relatively recent films were shown. Considering this is a Spanish museum there was a distinct lack of examples of Spanish cinema. Also, any person of colour visiting must feel horribly under-represented to the point of erasure. This seems something that would be easy to put right in order to make this a five star experience.Written 22 June 2019
- 27Ruben270 contributionsGREAT Museum for every ageInteresting film museum. Lots of history, photos, exhibits. They have original equipment, cartels, etc. Self tour start with a short video and just follow the arrows and you will have a great time, specially if you like movies. They deserve a lot of credit for putting together a lot of information. They also have a small shop that you see before exit. Do not miss this museum in Girona.Written 9 June 2019
- DaceS4890 contributionsInteractive attraction with wide info especially about European cinema.Museum is interesting for people with very different level of knowledge. Touches all aspects of cinema, history, stats, producers, directors, music. Depending on how important cinema is in your life could spend starting from an hour to all day there. I would say very special bonus is wide info on Europe’s cinema. Loved part devoted to Fellini. There is a lot of funny interactive activities even for small kids who don’t know anything about history of cinema.Written 8 February 2019
- margaretmleblanc670 contributionsGlad that we visited this museum!!!!!The history of filmmaking museum was around the corner from our hotel. We were pleasantly surprised about the extensive size of their collection of the evolution from still pictures to motion pictures with thorough explanations. Highly recommend!Written 23 November 2018
- Carrie M0 contributionsProbably the best in EuropeI was amazed to visit this museum and find out all the treasures it shows, from the very beginning of Photography's History, going through all the 19th century, until the first films arrive. I had never seen, in Paris, London, Lisbon, Rome, etc., such a magnificent collection of techniques and such wonderful machines.Written 8 October 2018
- Navigator7564190 contributionsA true gem and a must see placeHonestly, I liked this museum way more than the art museum and the tour through the cathedral. There's so much thought put into the three floors of the cinema museum - lots of moving stuff, interactive models of camera obscura and various optical illusions placed throughout the entire path, different cameras, projectors and so much more. I felt like a kid thanks to this museum and I didn't want to leave. If you like cinema and at least just a bit interested in how static images evolved into what cinema is right now, just go for it. You won't be disappointed. Just make sure that you have at least a couple hours for the visit. Time flies by in this place :)Written 26 September 2018

Passing by the sign, I decided to take a look and it is without regret! The museum is really complete is interesting for film connoisseurs as well as for a general audience, the animations are well done and we do not see the past time. Beautiful objects are on display and the Audio Guide is directly included in the Award. The Award of the visit which is very low is profitable from the first floor (and there are 3!). I strongly recommend this museum for future travelers to this city!

I am a film professional with a good knowledge of the history of cinema and how it emerged form the shadow play. I randomly came across the museum and decided to check it out with my family.
It is by far one of the best collection of the magic lanterns and other pre-motion picture instruments that I have ever seen at one place. The audio guide is excellent and interactive displays demonstrate really well different techniques used in the creation of the visual experience.
We’ll worth to spend some time there and get a rare view of history of cinema.

Just before leaving Girona after our overnight stay we thought of visiting the museum having seen it mentioned and signposted . Four floors of artefacts and the pioneers from the first of moving animation then beginning of motion picture to the movies as we now know it. Spent an hour anyway but could easily have spent a lot longer as found it really interesting especially with all the articles , pieces and equipment on display plus the informative video clips. Really worth a visit.
Mobility issues should be no problem as lifts available to all levels. Introduction video is on first level then lift takes you to 4th then descend each floor of the museum through the years of cinematography.

I love cinema and had never seen a collection like this. I didn't choose to visit Girona for the museum that became the icing on the cake of the city tour.
