About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- styles00240 contributionsPaolo was a great guideThe tour was great. Paolo was an expert in every way. His passion and knowledge for Roman history led to one of the best parts of our trip to Italy. It was our first time at Pompeii and we hope to return.Written 23 January 2025

- henryw5020 contributionsWe dig Diego and Pompeii!Diego was an absolutely amazing guide. He was so informative and took time to explain all of the history and also explain elements of the archaeological process. The audio headsets allowed us to linger a little at certain parts and still hear the narration until we caught up and could be closer. - jstern1170 contributionsGreat Tour of Pompeii and HerculaneumThis tour was "Pompeii and Herculaneum Small Group tour with an Archaeologist Tour + Transport from Naples," and we went on Jan. 9, 2025, with Askos Tours. Raphael was our guide and he was terrific - very knowledgeable and entertaining and we all learned so much. We were picked up in Naples in the morning in a very nice van with 15 total people on the tour. We saw Pompeii and had lunch there (not included in price) and then toured Herculaneum, and we returned to Naple well before 5pm. It was a wonderful day.Written 12 January 2025
- Bayley S0 contributionsA wonderful expert made for a great experienceThe guide we had was extremely knowledgeable and a true expert on the subject. She was able to not only thoughtfully explain in detail where we were and what we were looking at but was also able to give her opinions and interpretations as an expert in the subject. I am so glad I decided to book with a guided tour rather than an audio guide or amisly wandering around the ruins myself.Written 12 January 2025

- Kenny1006530 contributionsBucket List doneWhat an amazing site. Luckily our guide - we booked through a travel agent based in Europe - was an archaeologist who has worked on the Pompeii site and his knowledge was invaluable. I was amazed at the extent of the site as it was much bigger than I had imagined. Our 2 hour tour touched the surface of the whole project and being in a place that once thrived over 2,000 years ago was for me quite an emotional experience. If I had the time ……. Well worth almost any cost. A must see site.Written 11 January 2025

We found the meeting point easily from the location sent by the tour operator, but would advise not to follow the route to the exact location sent as it took you way past the entrance and if driving past the car parks too.
Pompeii:
The tour organisers were at the entrance signing in everyone, it’s a little bit manic as there are loads of people trying to sign in at the same time, with all the people there we missed that there are lockers to the left where you can leave bags.
We were all assigned a tour guide and given headsets to be able to hear. Our guide was really good, she had a great sense of humour and was very enthusiastic. Only negative in Pompeii is that the headset lost connection a couple of times when we were near the back through the narrow alleys of the ruins. Otherwise a really good tour.
Vesuvius:
Really frustrating but we were not given any information as to what time and where to meet our guide for the second part of the tour - Vesuvius, we overheard another couple asking other travellers if they knew anything, as it turned out we had about an hour in between Pompeii finishing and Vesuvius starting, plenty of time to visit the stalls selling an array of souvenirs and food.
The climb up Vesuvius was about 25 minutes, with about 30 mins to walk around the crater and 25 mins to walk back down. There are three shops on the way up selling snacks and drinks - but be warned no toilets! And if like us you go on one of the hottest days of the heatwave it’s hard going! But well worth it!

Brilliant tour of Pompeii with Sergio who was informative and entertaining throughout.
Hike up Vesuvius with Mario was also very enjoyable. Even though it was blisteringly hot, Mario kept us informed very well about the geology and history of the area and made sure we stayed together as a group without making it feel like we had to wait for people to catch up!
Would highly recommend.
Might suggest buying double train tickets on outbound journey to save half for the return and skip the queue at Pompéi Scavi ticket machine!

Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area I went with my son 17 and my boyfriend during a heat wave with little shade which could have easily made the entire day miserable but it was impossible to be upset. We had a lovely tour guide to start the day vincent for our tour of Pompeii he was pleasant kept things interesting and comical as well as educational. The tour was very informative and better than any museum you could find. Following the tour completion we had time to explore the city a bit longer as your tickets are good for the day until 7pm and there is SO much to explore. However we left after another hour and got some lunch right outside the gates which was very good and quick. Then met up with MARIO our hiking guide. The bus was a little hot with weak if any a/c but being out of the sun was enough to make it fairly comfortable. Mario was a wonderful guide as well kept a good pace and allowed rest time for those that needed it. I was not originally expecting this to take the entire day we started at 10:00 and we were back at the gates of Pompeii for our train at 5:45. We would definitely recommend to family and friends. Thanks again to our amazing guides VINCENZO and MARIO :)

The tour was split into two parts with the morning spent at Pompeii with our archaeological guide Alfredo. He was knowledgeable, took us to the key spots and talked us through some of the fascinating history. The tour lasted about the right time as it was hot but it also allowed for us to do our own exploring of the site afterwards. Would recommend this one.
The second half was spent climbing Mt Vesuvius with our guide Mario. Mario was also knowledgeable and during both the bus and climb talked through the history of the mountain. He paced the climb well as though not long it was a hot day and the group was of various ages and fitness levels. There was good explanation of the volcanic processes which I found fascinating and interesting. A really good tour and well worth the effort. The caldera and views from the top of the Bay of Naples are amazing.

We travelled down from Rome to do a day trip with Askos tours. We planned the travel by train on Trenitalia, the transfer was tight in Naples but it was a relatively quick way of getting there and back.
The tour group meets right outside the train station near a ok/good restaurant with toilets so you can plan refreshments before, during and after the tour. The Pompei tour was first (10:30) then followed by the Vesuvius tour (14:00).
The pompei tour guide was slow and boring, so we left that after 20 minutes so we could cover the main points of interest. We were provided a map which helped identify where to go, Apple Maps on iOS was also useful in combination with that. Plan a good 2 hours and don’t miss the garden of the fugitives.
The Vesuvius part of the tour was completely different, very enjoyable. The guide Mario was more knowledge than the volcanology expert we had 15 minutes with at the top of the crater. He made that entire the trip, was funny and spent a bit of time with everyone to ask them about themselves and give them travel advice and answer any questions we had on the experience.
I would completely recommend Vesuvius as an activity. It was really spectacular. Luckily we had a fit group that could handle the 20-25 min, mild incline easily. It goes from the car park to the summit (150m up or so). The shops up the top sell scam wine I think, it was poor quality. Take a bottle of water with you as well.
Overall a good experience that I’d recommend as something different to what Rome has to offer. 5/5

If you’re going to book a tour to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius, book this one! We were staying on Capri when we were supposed to go on our tour and there was a big thunderstorm in the forecast. We called well after the cancellation window, and Paulo let us reschedule with zero problems. He also helped us set up all of the logistics for storing our luggage and driving us to our hotel, since we rescheduled to our transfer day between Capri and Amalfi.
Our driver and organizer the day of the tour was Francesco and he was the best guide you could ask for. Even though we ended up going up Vesuvius in poor weather, he kept morale high with his infectious energy and famous playlists. We really couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Pompei is spectacular and I got a lot out of going with a guide. The headset meant being able to hear all the commentary. The guide does excavation on the site, so he was extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend this portion. Vesuvius was also worthwhile, but a few points to note. While there is a good, reasonably sure-footed path up the mountain, if you aren’t in pretty good shape or you’re not feeling 100%, you may have a tough time as it’s consistently steep the whole way. It’s not at all a technical climb—just straight uphill walking. If you think you would die if you slowly jogged a mile, I’d advise against it. Also, if it’s a hazy or rainy day, you won’t see much of the scenery below, though you look right into the caldera, so you’ll always be able to see that. Prepare to hear the word “pyroclastic” about 1000 times.

My friend and I went on the small group tour of Pompeii in English- firstly, the staff were incredibly accommodating in helping us get to the site. Our group had about 15 people, and the radios meant that we could hear everything while walking and stopping to look at attractions/fill our water bottles etc. Our guide, Diego, was so well-informed and excellent at communicating the history of the site. We learned so many small details which made a huge difference in our understanding and appreciation. The tour was 2 hours which, while we were both tired at the end, was a good length of time to fully immerse you in the history and experience. Would definitely recommend!

We booked onto a combined tour, in the morning we visited Pompeii with Carmine and the afternoon we visited Vesuvius with Mario.
It soon became apparent that 2 hours in Pompeii was not enough time but Carmine did his best to ensure that he gave us a great insight into Pompeii took us to key sites in Pompeii
The tour guides were both brilliant but the companies organization was not so good.
At Pompeii they wasted time waiting for everyone to turn up before putting them into groups. Thankfully we went into the 1st group so didn't lose too much time.
We were sent email instructions asking us to meet up at 2.30pm for the Vesuvius tour, it turned out we should have been at the meet point earlier. Thankfully Mario called us and we headed to the meeting point and whilst he contacted another couple who had been given the same instructions, I managed to quickly buy something to eat.
Mario & the mini bus driver took us to Vesuvius
Where we walked up the volcano and met up with the geological tour guide who gave us a talk and the crater.
Mario was friendly and very knowledgeable of Vesuvius and the surrounding areas. He engaged with all members of the tour. He showed interest in the plans you had for the rest of your trip and made food & visit recommendations to make your stay even better. We really enjoyed our trip to Vesuvius and would highly recommend the walking tour.

Simply an amazing experience. Our first guide was Benedito (Benedict) guiding us through the excavated ruins of Pompei. Full of insights and interesting facts - a wonderful experience to have an archaeologist as a guide. Pompei is so beautifully and carefully preserved it is an unmissable experience.
Our second guide was Mario, who took us for a hike up Mt Vesuvius. This is something I never thought I would be able to experience. Mario was also an amazing source of information specifically on Mt Vesuvius and the surrounding active volcano's in the Naples area. To see steam coming from an active volcano seems like a little thing but it truly is a testament to what is underneath.
Thank you to both guides - an incredible day.
