What to expect
  • This 3-hour afternoon guided tour of Christian Rome is an excellent way to learn the history of the faith and the city. After getting picked up at your hotel and meeting your guide, learn about the early history of the Church in Rome and how the city was a major influence on Christianity today.  Visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a cavernous 5th-century church that today has a Baroque appearance. Stroll around the huge church with your guide learning about the history of the building and then head to San Giovanni in Laterano, otherwise known as the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the historic and official church of the pope. Go inside and walk around and then head next door to the Lateran Palace where the supposed steps of Pontius Pilate, known from the Biblical account of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus, exist. Today pilgrims ascend the 28 steps on their knees.  At the top of the steps is the Holy of Holies, otherwise known as the Sancta Sanctorum, the erstwhile resting place for some of the most legendary relics in Church history: a chunk of the table that held the Last Supper, the heads of Saints Peter and Paul and the Holy Foreskin, the only piece of flesh Christ could have conceivably left on Earth, said to have been given to Pope Leo III by Charles the Great in 800 AD. Next, trace the Appian Way, the famous ancient Roman road, passing the Chapel of Domine Quo Vadis, reputed to stand where St Peter saw a vision of the risen Christ. Arrive at Rome’s catacombs – the nearly 186 miles (300 kilometers) of tunnels used as burial chambers and hideouts by early Christians. Then, depending on accessibility, explore the San Castillo, Santa Domitilla or San Sebastiano tunnels to see the burial niches, frescoes and other treasures lying inside. Lastly, take in views of the Baths of Emperor Caracalla, the ruins of a 3rd-century Roman bathhouse. Then, end your tour at the start point or your choice of several city-center locations.

It has been a month since we used this tour company. The guide had a limited ability In speaking English, was rude, and irresponsible. We strained to understand what was being said throughout the tour. She raced through the Vatican with seemingly no regard for those who could not keep up. Finally, she took off and left 15 on her tour at the Vatican. We had no way to reach the Greenline office as there was no answe at the phone/number we had. We learned the next day through our hotel concierge, who had recommended this tour company, that she apparently lied to her boss. She told them that 15 on her tour, who were not traveling together, had told her that we were staying at the Vatican. This is NOT what happened! She left us each to find our own way back to our individual hotels. I DO NOT RECOMMEND Green Line Tours!!!

I agree that your guide can make or break your experience and I finished this tour disappointed. Antonio (Anthony) was also our guide and watched him on more than one occasion take off when exiting the bus at sites. We felt so bad for those who could not keep up with him so we ended up assisting in helping others in group cross busy streets in order to not get separated. The excitement of seeing the Scala Stairs was taken away due to guides lack of excitement. If it wasn’t for someone asking to see the stairs, we would have not gone because we were on our way back to the bus....and the Scala stairs were right across the street.

The only reason I’m giving this tour a poor and not terrible is because the tour guide at the Catacombs was Awesome! She walked us through, was engaging and showed compassion for others.

This does not bring me joy to say but I Would not recommend this tour.

A guide can make or break your experience. Our tour was booked through Green Line Tours. My husband and I are in our 50s, there was another couple younger, but most were older to elderly. Anthony was our guide. As soon as we got to our destination he would just get out of the bus and start walking, he waited for no one. Sometimes this was crossing streets in busy Rome, waiting for lights. 4 people didn't even get off the bus at the last 2 stops. I believe they felt bad for us having to wait on them or fear of being left behind. Some places you could not take pictures. The catacombs were very interesting, no photos. We visited a church Anthony said was the oldest cathedral in the world. It was amazing and allowed pictures, we didn't walk to the front, he led us out without much time to look at the magnificent church. The tour included seeing the Scala stairs, the holy stairs. We were across the street Anthony pointed and said those are the Scala stairs. Then we started walking the other direction back to the bus. I went to the front and said are we going to see the stairs. He said you can't walk or kneel on them that is extra. I said the tour was supposed to include seeing them. He asked us, do yall want to see them. Everyone wanted to see. We walked across the street, he went and spoke to someone and we were allowed to stand at the base of the stairs but not touch or go up on our knees as many people were doing. Stay away from this tour.

We found this tour to be very interesting. Our tour guide, Luca, was very knowledgeable and very good at conveying the information/history to our group. We were able to locate the city wonders employees very easily in the piazza, and they were very efficient at getting everything in order quickly. Buses were comfortable and we felt safe with the driver. Not only did our guides talk about things at the different tour sites but they also talked about history along the way as we passed significant buildings/monuments. I would recommend this tour!

We took this tour looking for historical Rome sites from a Christian perspective. It was that only superficially. The main good thing was seeing the catacombs, which are a bit out of town. But we even used the tour guide at the basilica for that part of the tour. The guide was trying to do the tour in three languages, which was pretty distracting and also limited how much was actually said in English of course. She also did not have an audio set (with us having earphones), but was only using her voice and it was very hard to hear all that was said. The steps Jesus walked on to be sentenced by Pilate were under renovation, but we were not told that until we were on the tour. So the only other two stops were two more basilicas. Would have appreciated more about the Christian persecution in Rome rather than just more about Catholicism.

We wanted to see the Catacombs and have a guided tour of some Christian related places. As we waited on the mini bus, we were greeted by our guide who had to translate for 5 different languages but about 5minutes into the trip her microphone stopped working. There was another 'guide' (I think?) on board who preceded to have a chat with her the entire tour which got very annoying as we had no idea where we going nor given any explanation of the surrounding areas. We spent 40mins at the Catacombs with another guide who was a bit better but we had no hearing aids so half the time we couldn't hear what she was saying as there was quite a few tours happening at the same time. We moved on from there and I had to ask where we were going... She said she would tell us when we arrived. Not really what you want to hear when in a foreign country heading who knows where. We ended up getting off at one of the churches and completely lost the group in the crowd. When we eventually found everyone the guide did not look fazed and had moved on with the showing people around. We were very disappointed with this tour and feel we could have spent less looking around ourselves.
