Small-Group Tour: Etna Wine and Alcantara from Taormina
From US$104.78
Overview
Discover Mt. Etna without a strenuous hike to the summit, and check out a lava cave and the Alcantara Gorge, too. This day trip from Taormina showcases the history-rich foothills and woodland around Europe's largest active volcano, forgoing the need to scale any steep hills. A traditional Sicilian lunch with wine from the volcanic region is also included.
What to Expect
Leave your Taormina hotel in the early morning and travel to the foothills of Mt. Etna.
Arrive at the volcano’s base for a guided hike around beguiling lava formations, craters, and trees that typify Mt. Etna’s surrounds. When you’ve had your volcano fix, continue to a nearby lava cave and peer into its dark corners, courtesy of a headlamp.
Take a break for lunch, savoring three courses of tasty Sicilian fare with wine produced in the Mt. Etna region. As you eat, learn about the mineral-rich volcanic soil that gives the wine its special characteristics.
Continue to the natural ravine of Alcantara Gorge that was formed from an ancient flow of lava. Wander in the shadows of the towering cliffs and pose for photos against its striking backdrop.
Your tour ends with a convenient drop-off at your Taormina hotel.

Best Tour ever. Thanks Paolo!

We have just returned from the full-day tour with Paolo, the most informative, amusing and entertaining guide. I particularly enjoyed the explanations of how many historical events were in fact caused by volcanoes. Paolo's background in natural sciences and vulcanology made for a fascinating tour....More

The water in the gorge is very shallow - maybe 12 inches max. It's also very cold. We wore shorts for the tour and just kicked off our shoes when we arrived at the gorge. No need to change.
