Highlight of an awesome week! We were promptly met by Rosario, our most knowledgeable guide. This tour should be a definite on anyone’s itinerary to Sicily. We were fortunate to have a clear sunny day! The trip up, the lift, the walk around the views spectacular! The rest of the day was filled with wonderful surprises, caves and gorges and a most wonderful lunch in a vineyard!..Did not want to leave!

Picked up in Mazzarro for the journey to Etna on our SAT excursion. Interesting drive through towns and villages to reach the cable car base station.
Too windy for the cable car to run, so we travelled up by Unimog 4x4, and then in a similar vehicle to the top stop. We were met by our geology guide, and were led around a dormant crater, very informative guide. Great to be walking on an active volcano at about 3000 metres, views restricted by the haze but it was being there that mattered.
Dress warmly, with the wind chill it was about freezing, and there was a lot of dust blowing around

we were with Etna Trekking on Oct 20th..3 couples, picked up at Villa Ducale in Taromina. Our Guide was Marco, who drove the oldest Land Rover (his girl friend!) who at one time was a rep for Barilla Pasta Co., and married to a restaurant owner..very interesting and well educated guide and fun to be with.He has a real passion for Mt.Etna. On the way to the Mtn we stopped at one of the oldest pastry/coffee shops (Russo 1880 ) in the area for treats. Off road we visited two caves and a great spot for panoramas of the top of Etna. We went to Terrazze Delle ETNA winery for a fabulous lunch at the farm house and tour of the winery (case of the "Cirui" white is now home!). The key to the experience was the knowledge (and excellent English) of Marco.

I do not usually write reviews, but I really want to share my experience. We took the SAT tour bus to Etna. In a nutshell, if you have access to a car, do this trip by yourself! You do not need to pay the high price for this tour, it is ONLY for transportation. We waited forever as they loaded the bus because there was only one person to deal with all of the "issues" people had. We finally left and instead of an hour travel time, it took over two and a half hours to get there. The bus was packed and the tour manager was impatient and did not give us the proper information to explain what we needed to do once we arrived. He bought our passes to take another bus he then he disappeared. We didn't know how we were getting to the top and we had to figure it out ourselves. There was yet another bus/jeep to take but this was not explained to us and some people instead tried to walk the rest of the way and wasted a LOT of time. It was very cold and windy at the top of the volcano, it was so windy it was hard to hear the Etna guide and look at the crater. It was not worth the money in my opinion.

Hello kellydU8369WB, we have investigated on the date of your trip and found that day was totally unusual and out of standard. As you probably have felt, a terrible wind has been blowing all night long producing the fall of many trees and light poles on the highway's roadway and causing the closing of the highway itself and many rows of cars on the national road as well. The traffic was completely chaotic and information arrived little by little. Everybody was uncertain of what to expect. So, our Guide was giving updating about the itinerary that must be diverted for forces majeurs. In fact, normally the tour's itinerary provides the use of the highway to reach Giarre for then getting up to the Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 meters. For this reason we have accumulated 1 and a half hour on the tour's schedule. Once at 1900 meters the group is consigned to the Alpine Guides who are responsible for that part of Mount Etna and decide also on the opeartivity of the cable car, which was closed due to the strong wind. I hope we can have the possibility in the future to offer you a more satisfactory experience since the one of Monday was not absolutely a standard routine but a very difficult day. Regarding the weather on Mount Etna, we do not have any control on that and we are sorry if on that day it was not the best. We take the occasion to send you our warmest regards. We took the full tour up Etna including the trip to the Alcantara gorge en route. We thought the entrance fee to the gorge would be included in the cost then found out we would have to pay an additional cost to go down. As the cost of the tour was 92 euro's this was unexpected so we observed the view which was lovely, for free from the top and enjoyed a drink - those that went down suggested it wasn't worth the additional payment.
Etna was superb definitely do the full tour to gain the full experience and see the different perspectives of Etna. The tours are well organised and there were no delays moving from one form of transport to the next. There are different options for different heights on the same tour- book the full tour from the point of booking rather than go to 1900 m and pay to go higher there as it will cost you more.
Views are excellent - coats and shoes are available to hire if necessary sturdy shoes are a must and temperatures in July were mid teens but felt cooler with the wind. A cardigan/cagoule was sufficient.
We would rather have had an extra hour up the volcano rather than visit the beekeeper on the way back as it would have been nice to visit the lower craters which we didn't have time to do.

We were expecting great things with this tour, but ultimately left disappointed.

Firstly, it would be better to consider this as “transportation” rather than a “tour” - you are really paying for a 2+ hour coach journey each way from Taormina to Mount Etna with a few pickup stops on the way, with the optional cost of a cable car ticket if you want to go to a certain height.

The double-decker coach was completely full with 60 people on board - not a very comfortable start to the day. The guide seemed disinterested and barked the same instructions a number of times in Italian, then English, and then German which left little time to relax on the journey. There were too few interesting pieces of information about the volcano included.

When we arrived at the mountain we realised that every tour group arrived at the same time so the queues for the cable car (which takes groups from 2,000m to 3,000m) were huge. There was nothing to identify our coach group from the hundreds of other people, and no separate fast-track lanes made available. Through better planning by the coach company this would have been a much better experience.

When we got to the top of the cable car we waited again, before being crammed into a 24-seater 4x4 industrial-looking bus and driven 10 mins to the upper crater where we met another mountain guide. Again with no real co-ordination the guide unenthusiastically gathered whoever was standing nearby and started talking - after 5 mins we ditched him and walked around the craters without him.

Mount Etna is beautiful, but with hundreds of people there at the same time, the experience is lessened.

Back at the bottom of the cable car the restaurant at the bus stop was bland, and we found ourselves queuing to get back on the bus with 20 mins to spare. After further delay we departed, only to need to change bus on the journey due to a mechanical issue.

Poor.

Hello triathlonsean, we can only excuse us for the mechanical problem occurred to the coach, but we cannot excuse for finding a lot of crowd on Mount Etna. There is only a way to get to the highest altitude and only a company is handling the ascent and all Tour Operators have to respect the queue. That is normal. At the end reading your sentence "Mount Etna is beautiful, but with hundreds of people there at the same time, the experience is lessened." gives us a smile, we cannot really avoid to have so many visitors on Mount Etna, considering that Mount Etna is a UNESCO site and the most famous destination in Sicily. You should expect a certain amount of people there. Cordial greetings. Guest Relation Manager SAT Group

We debated along with many others on our trip whether we should visit Mount Etna as the cost which varied between €45 -€65 Euros seemed steep ,but we decided to go.We travelled to the cable car station via coach where some stayed. We paid €30 and caught the cable car up to the next level which was about 7000 feet. There we jumped on a truck (€30) and went up to just below the crater (8500 feet)where we picked up a guide. Then up to the ridge. If you have the money and opportunity pay the additional €60 and take the cable car and truck up to the top.The experience is great with the volcano blowing dust and smoke out every ten minutes ,making popping noises and creating dust and black cloud. Two tips, firstly at the top level the air is light and can make you short of breath ,normal for the height ,but think if you have a medical condition.Secondly, check the weather,if it’s a clear day go to the top,on cloudy days the top is shrouded with cloud.Great once in a life time experience not to be missed.Remember carry a jumper it’s cold on top ,also take some chocolate or mints for energy when your up and a small bottle of water.Shorts will be cold ,wear firm soled shoes/trainers and trousers.

We almost missed a wonderfull day at Mount Etna because the weather forecasts were bad. But the helpfull woman at SAT-groups Office at the Corso i Taormina showed us at more precisely (and better) forecast. The SAT-group Tour is good deal if you want to be on your own at Mount Etna and self decide what to do (witout guides). You have about 3,5 hour at Mount Etna. You must expect the guide to inform in 3 languages on the way to Etna (but appropriate silence on the Home trip).

Hello LN2840, advising our customers is part of our job. Some tours are very much affected by the weather and our staff is always there to help and suggest the best day to enjoy naturalistic sites such as Etna and the Aeolian Islands. A good choice for the guests is important to us as we wish to have smiling customers! Thanks for the tip. All the very best, Guest Relations Manager SAT Group

We were picked up by taxi from our hotel in Taormina and driven to Etna, stopping at places of interest en route. Climbing up the volcano, lava fields from past eruptions and other places of interest were pointed out. We could stop and take photos when we wished. The area where you catch the cable car is filled with cafes, restaurants and shops. The cable car takes you further up the volcano and to reach the summit you ascend in 4 wheel buses. The ground is like thick black soot or black sand. The people who were walking to the top, their feet sunk into the black dust, it looked like hard work!! I thoroughly enjoyed the day, Etna was not like other volcanoes l have visited. I would recommend this excursion to anyone who is interested in natural, geographic features.
