About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- sophiaciot0 contributionsAwesome cooking class!Had the best time with Paolo! Chef kiss to the whole experience n to the basically bottomless wine that was included in the experience :) In between the drinks n the enormous quantity of food we made, we spent the whole time rolling on our bellies out of laughter (n fullness)Written 17 November 2024
- hamsterproductions0 contributions14 hours notice that the trip was cancelled.Cancelled 4pm the night before the trip because they didn’t have enough people. This would have been known to them well in advance of the point they cancelled. Give people more warning so they can make other plans! This was supposed to be the highlight of our trip and given more notice we could have booked elsewhere.Written 15 November 2024
- joeandgailhome0 contributionsUmm Umm GoodChef was excellent, there were six of us in the early evening, restaurant was busy, but we had two tables set aside, one for preparing our pasta and pizza, the other for consumption. Great fun ,good instructions, all in all wonderful experienceWritten 11 November 2024
- TejalR150 contributionsWonderful family experienceSuch a wonderful family experience! We booked as rain was forecast but had so much fun. The only reason I can’t give it a 5/5 is that the restuarant was absolutely packed and the staff seemed a little overwhelmed e.g. they kept insisting that our group sit at a table to eat that clearly had too few seats. This resulted in a few people having to sit outside apart from the group which was definetly not ideal.Written 22 October 2024
- MikeB88180 contributionsMt Etna & Alcantara Gorge trip pretty amazingGetting into a double decker tour bus and travelling through the narrow country lanes on the lower slopes of Etna is an adventure unto itself! The Alcantara Gorge was our first drop off. The water was frigid, yet refreshing. The twisted rock structures Then we boarded a wee train for an hour-long trip through some amazing lava flows and farmlands. After that, we jumped back on the bus and wound our way up the eastern slopes of Etna to the tourist hub (restaurants, shops, etc). Our journey continued with a cable car ride further up the mountain, where we jumped on a 4WD bus thing which took us up a dusty track to around 3000 metres. We finished with a trek around a recent spatter cone to look at a pretty impressive lava flow. This was an excellent trip with a multi-lingual guide and a range of different and amazing experiences. Highly recommended!Written 20 October 2024
- Jill W0 contributionsGreat Day with Great Sights! The tour was very good. Whilst the other island was quaint, it was Stromboli, which was an experience that I will never forget. The people that live on this constantly erupting volcano are interesting. Get on the boat and go around the other side of the volcano and see an impressive sight red fire plumes, noise and constant change, amazing. Time in each venue was long enough lots of travel on this tour but worthy of the time to get there. Alexandria, our guide was very good and kept everyone informed even though the group contained a variety of nationalities and languages. SEE organised a trip that works, expect a long tiring dayWritten 18 October 2024
- 411jennyp0 contributionsJust focus on one place please! This was a very long day, but we knew that before we went, as the information provided was very clear. The tour company also collected us near our hotel which was very helpful. However, what was not helpful was that the tour guides for this particular tour did not seem as fluent in English as they evidently were in other languages. The trip was marred by this as a consequence. We had very limited information during the tour round the temples and really very little time to see the ruins properly and do it justice. There were other aspects of the site that we just didn’t get to see or find out about. Given the length of the trip and the cost, it would have been better if we had was visited only one place giving us a decent amount of time to see the whole site. The piazza armerina mosaics were lovely but we would have preferred to just spend time at the valley of the temples.Written 18 October 2024
- 761lessw0 contributionsArancino makingWe had a great time learning how to make arancino. Great restaurant, great chef and great company. We learnt the tricks of the trade and came away with more arancini than we could eat. We even went back the next day for lunch. Definitely recommend this experience!Written 2 October 2024
- TriciaQ1866050 contributionsSAT TourBus arrived on time. Arrived at location but because of numbers were divided in two groups. Did not find either guide to be very informative and felt tour was too rushed. Lost our guide as she walked off without putting up her umbrella could not find her. Second guide was hopeless. Time alone in the town was fun we went off and did our own thing. You could easily do this tour cheaper on your own !!Written 30 September 2024
- lhaganmich0 contributionsLong Day from Taormina but worth seeing! Ruins and mosaics are well preserved! The Valley of the Temples and Villa Romana del Casale are defintely worth seeing. The guide explained most of the mosaics prior to getting to the villa. As for the valley of the temples, she did briefly explain each temple/monument. This is a LONG day. What I didn't like... the food at the lunch stop was terrible. By far the worst meal we had in sicily. Also the guide failed to point allow for bathroom stops and the bus didn't have a functional bathroom. After the last stop, we traveled over 3 hours to get back to Taormina (without a bathroom break). We did get stuck in traffic but the guide said that the "traffic is always bad." If it is warm out, bring an extra set of clothes to change in. There is not much shade at the valley of templesWritten 12 September 2024
- kaykristiana0 contributionsA fantastic Sicilian experienceOne of our favorite days on our entire European Summer holiday! - Mare320 contributionsWorth visiting & thanks to our guide and driverGreat tour thanks to our driver Angelo and our experienced guide Lisbet ! We have done many tours with SAT GROUP and have never been disappointed : easy booking process, pick-up possibility at several places around Taormina, Giardini, Recanati. The program is respected, they are very punctual. During the trip we get a lot of practical information in several languages. Once arrived, our guide gives the detailed planning and let the guests decide if they join the group or go solo. Just be back in time, that's all. We recommend to stay with the group because Lisbet is an expert and takes time to answer questions and to give information you won't find in any book or brochure. Thanks, SAT GROUP, Angelo & Lisbet !Written 17 August 2024
- Tom19120 contributionsLike being on the surface of the moon.I gave the tour a 4 because 4.5 was not an option. We did the SAT tour yesterday evening and were fully familiar with what to expect. Collected by minibus on time, close to our hotel in Giardini Naxos, we made our way up the mountain via a vista point to a parking area where the normal road ends. Here, after a glass of vino and welcome toilet break, we, after a 45-minute break, transferred to a huge 4x4 jeep/coach with another group of people. We then made our way up the mountain by tracks forged in a 2002 lave flow, which destroyed a lot of the area, stopping off at various vantage points. Note that this is not suitable for those unsteady on their feet or with open footwear because the surface is very loose underfoot. The views, however, were amazing with interesting descriptions from the guide. Once we arrived at the highest plateau that we could by road/track, we witnessed a beautiful sunset, amazing views of Etna going into silhouette, and as dark fell, you could see spectacular minor eruptions from the highest of craters. A jacket is required as in resort it was 35 degrees, but at the top, I could see my breath. The return journey in darkness was interesting and not for the faint-hearted. We were transported by SAT to a wooden eatery whereby you could participate in food and beverages which were perfectly adequate. By 23.30, we were back in resort (which was determined by time of sunset). The minor reason we didn't give it 5 circles is that it became a little confusing when we were combined with another group at the 4x4 transfer, and as there were several on the mountain at the same time you could easily become confused as to which vehicle the rest of the SAT party was on. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our etna experience. Thanks to Franco, who was attentive and entertaining.Written 14 August 2024
- Kristyn H0 contributionsExcellent all around, even when not accessing the lands of StromboliThough Stromboli was closed due to safety, this trip was phenomenal and worth the energy it sucks out of you! The start time is reasonable and the road trip to the motorboat was beautiful. The boat ride was a great experience, however I do wish I grabbed food before the boat. The boat does have good food, but I wind up only eating the boat food the whole day (minus a gelato and vino in Panerea). It is a long day, but it was all worth it! The beach is a decent walk, water shoes were my best friend and thongs could easily break due to the amount of walking and rocks. Walking a little extra to the Bay Area of the beach was again worth it, but not easy. Very little shade in all parts as well, I was lucky to have brought my light floaty because the rocks are uncomfortable and hot! The ferry home was a mixture of party vibes & exhaustion but it was great!Written 7 August 2024

We've booked this trip and we don't regret it.
The tour leader was really understandable and speaks fluent english. He was helpful as well.
We started our trip from Taormina bus station to Mount Etna. This took us around an hour and a half but we really enjoyed our trip. The tour guide was always explaining stuff about Etna and the towns below Etna etc.
We've paid the Funivia to go to the second level, and we don't regret it. It costs 30 euro per person but it's a nice experience. Thanks to the tour guide who recommended it.
We had like 3 and a half free hours for ourselves on etna and then we also went to Alcantra Gorges in the afternoon.
Alcantra was really exceptional. We paid an additional 7 euro to go down to the lake which was freezing cold. Really refreshing water. We just dipped our feet inside cause we were not able to swim. There were some people who were swimming tho.
We then headed back to Taormina. The only thing was that the sales rep that sold us this trip told us that by 5 pm we would be back in Toarmina but we were back at around 6pm. Be careful if you have plans/flights afterwards.

We really enjoyed this day trip to Mount Etna. Aleksandra, our tour guide was very organised, informative and amusing. The driver, Massimo, was clearly very experienced and had to negotiate some difficult manoeuvres.
We took the cable car to the top and then a jeep drove us to some of the nearby craters edge. It’s quite cold that high up, so I would recommend a jacket or fleece. The views are spectacular. The whole experience is quite thrilling and as the clouds clear you can see down into the huge caldera.
You are met by a guide who provides information and answers any questions. We also had plenty of free time to climb up another crater and walk around it’s edge. You can feel hot vapours coming out of the side of the mountain!
There are plenty of refreshments available at the cable car terminal and shops below when you finish.
We really enjoyed this trip and would highly recommend it during a stay in the area. The company provided a well organised, on time and friendly excursion.

Mt Etna is everywhere, so of course we wanted to go up. This was perfect, a half day (nearly 2 hours going, 2 hours there, 2 hours coming back =6 hours) Giuseppi was our driver, and what an expert driver he is. The hairpin turns, switchbacks, narrow two- way (?!) streets cam be nerve racking, but he is an expert and his overall skill is exactly what you need in this area. Thank you! Aleksandra, our guide, was very knowledgeable and told us so much during our trip in and out of the area. This was very helpful in understanding the area and the mountain.
If you get the very basic tour, you stay at the very lowest craters. You have access to all amenities and can still walk around many small craters. The extra costs pay for your lift, and then the 4x4 to take you as far as visitors are allowed to go. There you can either explore on your own (within the limits), listen to & follow the local guide around a little (not much further really), or hike down on your own. Once off the gondola you can rent a jacket €5, and there are amenities there as well.

Sept 2023 • Solo
Pick-up from the Taormina bus station was at 8:30 in the morning, after many stops our fully loaded huge double-decker bus arrived at the refugio at about 10:40. If you elect to go to the top (you should) then you will get on the Gondola, at the top of the gondola you get on a 4WD bus that will take you to a parking spot. From here your alpine guide will take you to see the craters and look at the summit. On the day I went the summit and the craters were clear but clouds obscured the view of the sea. After going back down to the refugio and getting some lunch we boarded the bus at 14:15 and arrived back in Taormina after 16:00. The only people I would recommend this tour to are solo travelers who are afraid to drive. For others try to find a small group tour. Better yet rent a car and drive, even for a solo traveler the cost will be about the same. If you are two or more then you will save money! Arrive when the lift opens at 8:30 for a better chance of clear views. Bottom line...would I take this tour again, no.

How can you say that most of the time is spent on the bus? 2 hours ride is absolutely normal considering the complimentary pick up of all the guests on the way (a very much appreciated service). Then time enough to spend on Mount Etna. Many people prefer not to drive and just relax and get an explanation on board. Regards, SAT Group

We enjoyed our tour. It’s not the tour company’s fault, but due to high winds we couldn’t take the cane car but instead they used large (20 passengers) 4x4s to get up to 2800 metres or so where we took a tour by foot at that elevation - we couldn’t go higher due to the winds but in good weather we were supposed to go higher. Oh well there are bigger issues in the world to worry about, we were happy to see that area of Mt. Etna.
The bus taking us to Mt. Etna was comfortable - a double-decker full with about 75 or so passengers.
We knew it was a group tour, but largely outdoors. By contrast we took a private tour (driver and guide) when we did a full day tour from Taormina to Catalina, Siracusa and Noto as we didn’t want to be in a large group for a lot of indoor sightseeing (a lot more expensive of course!).

First and foremost, going up Etna is an incredible experience. The day we went, the weather was terrible and we knew we probably wouldn’t see much.
We boarded our coach at 8.30am (it’s a big bus and they fill it up!) and off we went. Our driver was excellent and, when we arrived, we went on to the cable car and then into the keep for a drive around. Despite not being able to see a thing (genuinely), we had an amazing time. The food at the top is exceptional and there are plenty of places to buy as many things that could possible be made of volcanic rock as you can imagine! If you go into the miniature Etna shop, you can even buy condoms - I kid you not!
BUT…
Dear lord, the guide was awful. She was grumpy, spoke more in German than English and I can honestly say, I learnt nothing about Etna. Oh, there was something about bees… She was obsessed with telling us the height the bus was at and, half way up, many of us were tempted to play a drinking game using her saying “1,900 metres” - we’d have been hammered! Such a missed opportunity and a real disappointment. The bus journey could have got us really excited and been an experience in itself. I’ve seen from reviews that SAT have some good guides. This lady was definitely not one of them.

Hello, we thank you for the review that is appreciating the whole experience excluding our tour guide. Trying to reconstruct the day you are mentioning, since you do not indicate a specific date, we can only say that the weather was so terrible and the tour guide might have been nervous about it. We invite you to understand that our guide was handling a group of 67 participants with a double decker bus without knowing if the ascent could be done or not due to the weather conditions. She probably got a bit nervous about it since until the last minute we did not know if the ascent to the summit craters was possible. Our tour guides work every day on the road with all kinds of weather, heat with 40 degrees or fog and wind, their job is very tough and full of responsibility. Plus, you were invited to ask for more information in English, if you felt that you did not get enough of it. Next time please do it. Thank you. Warm regards.

The trip was amazing. The bus ride in was very knowledgable, with lots to look at and learn. 100% it's worth the upgrade to be able to use the Cable car and the 4x4 to get up to the top. Once at the very top you get to walk around the 2022 Eruption Crater. Not physically exhausting at all. Lots of areas to get food and beverages at the bottom. 3 pick up/ drop off points which worked great for people even not staying in Taormina. If you are not planning on paying for the cable car/ 4x4 it's very unlikely you will be able to hike to the top in time to get back to your departure.

This week on monday we decided to join the Etna day trip to upper crater. It cost 95€ per person but it was absolutely worth it. We went by bus, cable cars, jeeps, but we had a lot of time to explore by ourselves too. The tour guide Aleksandra was amazing and she provided us with a lot of interesting facts about Etna, Taormina and Sicily in overall. I highly recommend!

Bustling, pretty streets in Taormina with so many panoramic views! Hotel Ariston ideally placed adjacent to bus terminus for drop off, trips or walks in the town. And only 400m from cable car down to ( (the crowded) Isola Bella beach!
Fantastic food at the hotel - stay half board and take all the hassle out of trying to find a table in the busy bars/restaurants in the town.
Don't bother booking your Etna trip until you arrive - same price from hotel - and if you just book to go to the lower level (1900m) you can ALWAYS upgrade to go higher on the cable car on the coach there, of the top is clear of cloud!

This was a very frustrating day. The 60 minute journey from Giardini-Naxos was doubled due to extended pick ups that were not advertised. Arriving late out your guide encouraged not to go to the top of the Etna (2900 m) due to queues as we were behind schedule. We we had already paid the full amount of €110 each BUT the tour guide was unable refund us.
As a consequence to get our refund after the horrendous trip we had to remain on the bus, travel to travel company head office where our refund was reluctantly processed.
Finally we incurred an extra €30 taxi to get home.
We understand that nature can change but organisation shouldn’t.

Usually SAT Group is famous for punctuality, but delays can happen once on the road, we are sorry for that.
On that day the queue was caused by the heavy wind and, of course, cable car could not operate for safety reasons. We are sorry it was not an ideal day for Etna. We hope for next time. Regards, SAT Group Customer Care Manager

Bonjour. Heure retour ? Que comprend l’excursion ?? Par avance merci pour vos réponses

Hi, Is there much climbing involved? We are quite mobile but both over 60.

No climbing unless you want to , otherwise get chair lift to first stage, where there is a cafe, wait for the snowmobile that carries about 15 bodies on a high tracked snowmobile. This takes you to an expired crater which is about all the walking you will do (about 10 mins). Expensive E65 but worth it. Call me any further questions.

I’ve taken 2 day trips from Taormina Bus Station with SAT, and each time they have picked people up along the way. You need to phone them to book a possible pickup. Go to their website to see which days they go.

We would like to do a tour but only want to go if weather is clear for good visibility. We will be there the first week in June. Can we book once we get there and see what the weather will be?

Hi Do you have any availability on 21st or 22nd August for the full day tour to the crater for 4 people?
Thank you, Nigel

I think you have sent your question to the wrong person. You really want to be addressing the tour operator rather than me.
