Highlights
  • See the natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside
  • Hike along the Via Francigena to see vineyards and olive groves
  • Sample several wines during a guided tasting in Monteriggioni
  • Free time for exploring the village of Monteriggioni is included
What to expect
  • Meet your guide at the railway station in Siena to start the tour. Hop in an air-conditioned van to the hike to the starting point. The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrimage route, first mentioned in records in the 8th century, that stretches from Canterbury, England all the way to the Vatican in Rome, going through France and Switzerland along the way.  While its popularity decreased with the rise of automobiles, the Via Francigena is regaining popularity as there are now regular hikers and pilgrims on the trail. Stroll along the path and notice the beauty around you: the rolling hills blanketed in olive groves and the occasional vineyard. Pass through ancient villages that look the same as they did centuries ago when pilgrims would stride past.  After your hike, arrive at the striking village of Monteriggioni, a tiny walled town plopped atop of a medium-sized hill. Take part in a wine tasting here at a local wine shop and taste two different local varieties. After, feel free to explore the village at your leisure, popping into small shops, sitting down for lunch or investigating the medieval walls of the village. Your guide gives you a map that shows how to get to the railway station and, when you like, you can get the train back to Siena for the comfortable and scenic ride.

Beautiful hike through the Tuscan hills
Jun 2019
My husband and two adult children loved our hike last June. The guide was great and talked about the area and the history of the walking path. It took us 3.5 hours and the last hour was more challenging being hilly and rocky. The wine tasting with food pairings was a perfect ending to our hike. We loved it so much we ordered wine to be shipped home.

Amazing walking tour
Sep 2019
Thank you to our guide Checco for the best walking tour we have ever taken. Your knowledge and enthusiasm for the Tuscan countryside added so much to this outing. For three hours, you not only entertained us with stories but gave us such insight into the history, traditions and lives of the Tuscan people. The scenery, the weather and others members of our tour group added to a day that we will not soon forget. Thanks also to our host at Cantinetta di Monteriggioni for an excellent and informative wine tasting and cheese pairing.

Tuscany at its best!
Sep 2019 • Couples
We had the joy of being in the company of a great group of likeminded fun people and a guide who was a real gem! Keko brought the Tuscan history & countryside to life for us all showing & teaching us about the way of life, herbs & flora, culture, bio diversity & organic farming. The walk was leisurely & interesting and the wine tasting/cheese sampling was divine. Grazie mille

A very nice and interesting day :)
May 2019 • Couples
It was nice to see Tuscany from this side. For people who like active recreation and hiking this trip will be ideal. Footwear for hiking or sports shoes are mandatory.
The countryside of Tuscany was beautiful. Weather was great. Our guide Kikko was very nice and open. We learned a lot about the pilgrim route Via Francigena. We had a chance to talk about life, the world and people. It was a very interesting discussion. At the end we visited the castle in Monteriggioni and tasted wine and Italian delicacies. For the first time in our lives we ate cheese with blueberries.
In a word, we highly recommend it.

Amazing day, great views!
We really enjoyed this guided tour. It was a perfect day, we were lucky that it was a sunny day with a clear blue sky in autumn. Our guide, Fransceco, was friendly and very knowledgeable about all of the surrounding plants and trees and also talked a lot about the history of the area and the pilgrimage route. This tour is a must if you're in Siena, highly recommended.

Highly recommend
Fantastic day out in the countryside with a very informative and friendly guide. The walk isn’t too hard going and has plenty of water stops. Great organic wine tasting at the end of the walk and was held in a lovely setting. Would highly recommend!

Wonderful introduction to the Via Francigena
May 2018 • Couples
I had heard a little about the Via Francigena, but I got a more detailed history from Kikko, our tour guide. He was very informative and was an interesting person to converse with- very upbeat and friendly. I would highly recommend.

Perfect trek from Siena to Monteriggioni
Mar 2018 • Solo
I participated in a Tuscan Escapes walk from Siena to Monteriggioni in late March. The walk began at the outskirts of Siena and followed well marked paths. We took a leisurely pace in order to take in the beautiful countryside, and to examine the local plant life up close. Our weather was perfect: clear blue skies and temperatures hovering around 15 degrees C.

The walk itself took about two hours and followed, for part of the way, an original pilgrim's path. The terrain was relatively flat and bordered small farms and at some points, cut through wooded areas.

Our guides were knowledgeable and congenial. The pace, the conversation and the views of the Tuscan countryside all contributed to a memorable morning.

The small walled town of Monteriggioni is a jewel. It was quiet when we arrived which permitted exploration without the distraction of too many people.

Our wine tasting was a pleasant surprise. The sommelier introduced us to the wines of the Monte Chiaro vineyards. The wine, and the pairings, were excellent.

I would highly recommend this half-day excursion. To be able to explore the quiet Tuscan countryside with congenial guides, after a few days of museum and church visits, brings different perspectives on both contemporary and historical Tuscany.

Charming guide, world class wine tasting
Mar 2018 • Couples
We loved getting out into the country and learning about the area. Our guide was very knowledgeable, open and sharing. In Monteriggioni, we had the best wine tasting and snack paring we can remember. The town also has some charming shops with hand made quality. Bus ride back to Siena was very easy. (We did get our hiking boots muddy).

Walking the Via Francigena
Oct 2017 • Couples
We were in Siena in October 2017 and joined a walking tour to Monteriggioni. Our guide, Milo, was great - knowledgable and funny. The hike from outside of Siena to Moneriggioni was lovely. Milo shared stories, history, and philosophy. The wine-tasting was one of the best we experienced and we enjoyed lunch and the local bus ride back to Siena.
