About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Nick B0 contributionsPersonalized Willem Arondeus TourHenk was such a wonderful tour guide on my first trip to Amsterdam. We share an admiration (obsession really) for Willem Arondeus, Frieda Belinfante and Soerjd Bakker, and Henk put together a fantastic personal tour, revealing new facts, locations and stories I was completely unaware of. Aside from his expert knowledge, storytelling skills and passion for LBTQ history, Henk is also a wonderful person and such a delight to walk around the city and talk with. I can’t wait for Bet van Beeren’s bar to open again so I can return to Amsterdam and buy my new friend a drink!Written 7 September 2021
- ethawani0 contributionsA private tour held for American high school studentsHenk gave a private queer tour of the Rijksmuseum to a small group of American high school students. The Rijksmuseum is an iconic building and part of the city, so it was great to get a private tour of it. A 2 hours tour was too long for our group, so perhaps we'll do a shorter one next time.Written 16 July 2019
- Flyer678338059680 contributionsLGBT Tour. HENK is a fountain of information!!Did the LGBT tour with Henk. He’s knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. And funny? This guy has a great sense of humor. We learned so much about the history of the LGBT movement and some of the activists who led the fight for the rights we have today as LGBT people. Thanks Henk! Great afternoon spent with you! Next time we are in Amsterdam, drinks are on us! Shawn & Jon.Written 20 May 2019
- Matt A0 contributionsGreat tourHenk was a great guide and I leaned a lot. A very friendly, informed and lovely experience. This is a nice way to explore the city and pick up some cultural history. Thanks Henk!Written 9 May 2019
- SFOFrequentTraveler0 contributionsExcellent tour, great guideI took the LGBT history walking tour with Henk. He is an excellent guide, very friendly and knowledgeable about the city, and passionate about history. He took me and my friend to some interesting sights in the city center and gave us information about the sights that we would not have found on our own. Afterward, Henk took us to a great local bar where we continued chatting. I highly recommend this tour.Written 18 December 2018
- Roving585607797430 contributionsHighly recommended LGBT history tourDon’t miss out on one of Henk’s tours if you’re visiting Amsterdam! I did his LGBT walking history tour and it really gave me an in-depth perspective of the rich LGBT history and culture this wonderful city has to offer. Henk is fun and friendly and has a fountain of knowledge to share with you. Highly recommended!Written 22 November 2018
- LaiaGValle0 contributionsAmazing tourIt is my first time in a LGBT tour ever and I found it very interesting. Henk has a lot of knowledge about the city, history in the city and LGBT hystory. It was just amazing to hear him tell stories in different places of the city from the LGBT perspective. And having a beer with him and the other participants at the end and share stories was just the perfect ending.Totally recommended!Written 14 October 2018
- Isha B0 contributionsAmsterdam with a FriendOne of the best tours I've been on. It felt as if we were walking around Amsterdam with an incredibly knowledgeable friend. Chill, relaxed and highly informational about the LGBT community.Written 28 September 2018
- Roosevelt d0 contributionsA "must do" while you are in Amsterdam!!!Very educational with lots of interesting facts I wasn't aware of before meeting Henk. I will definitely recommend it to anyone and hopefully do it again to learn more from it.Written 24 August 2018
- Joao P0 contributionsRich in historical factsHenk is a very intelligent guy, and I felt like in an audio encyclopedia tour. He has a good sense of humor and carries out the tour very harmonically and yet full of information. I was very interested in all the historical parts of the Lbgt facts, that made what Amsterdam is today. The tour is a nice relaxed walk through the city that gives you a detailed insight into how things were in the past, finishing with a drink at one of the oldest gay bars in town. Next time I will bring not only my gay friends but also my straight ones. Thanks.Written 23 August 2018
- Johan N0 contributionsHighly recommended! We have joined this LGBT+ History tour of Henk as a group of LGBT+ newcomers of the Cocktail project of COC Amsterdam (a project empowering the LGBT+ refugees/asylum seekers community in Amsterdam by introducing them to the city, its people and its institutions and creating a social, safe environment to further build and expand their social network in this city). Our group, 10 persons, very much enjoyed the tour and often were impressed and surprised by some hidden or hardly known details within the LGBT+ history of our city. Henk combined facts of the city and its (LGBT+) history with a broad range of personal stories. He has been residing the city for quite a while and experienced how the city has changed during the past decades first hand. This shows in the way he tells these stories. For us it was often very striking to see similarities of the history of our city (with respect to human and LGBT+ rights) and the situation we still face in 76 of the countries in the world. Tolerance and acceptance towards the LGBT+ community here in Amsterdam has made so much progress over the past decades/centuries! However, we cannot deny it has been quite a long journey. Henk, who is a great story teller, explained the highlights (and lowlights) of this journey in a very informative and enthusiastic way. Covering important events and landmarks (like the Homo-monument and “het Mandje”). We definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting our city. Thank you Henk, for taking us on this tour!Written 21 August 2018
- cub280 contributionsvery interesting and informative.Henk out tour guide was very knowledgeable and articulated, i enjoyed his stories and explanation, Henk thank you for taking the time to answer my questions thoroughly.Written 15 August 2018
- Ben K0 contributionsA wonderful lens to learn about the history of AmsterdamI would highly recommend Henk’s LGBT history walking tour. He was knowledgeable and fun to talk to, passionate about discussing the history and culture of the Netherlands, and has put together a nice low key, informative, and worthwhile tour. I went solo but this would be fun for couples, families, or other individuals.Written 15 August 2018

Compelling stories of Amsterdam’s rich LGBTQ history at every stop! From gay resistance fighters in World War 2 to the oldest gay bar in Amsterdam, this tour was fascinating from beginning to end. The guide held our attention, even in the freezing cold weather! (It was December.) Highly recommend for anyone, but especially if you have LGBTQ people in your family. My trans teen loved this tour!

A personal, powerful storytelling tour surfacing queer history in Amsterdam and untold stories. Henk is an incredible guide and a wonderful human being- and this is a very special tour that I wholeheartedly recommend. Even if you think you know history - let alone queer history - there’s something here for you to learn.

Its been several days since our tour and I still cant stop thinking about how good it was.
Our history, LGBTQ+ History, is often forgotten and rarely talked about but Henk brought it alive for us. Henk uses a variety of mediums to strike at the question of who we are as a community, going back hundreds of years to the present day, reminding you that we are not just some modern question, but have always been around- and always fighting back.
Highly recommend for any LGBTQ+ people visiting Amsterdam, and maybe even for the straights who want to learn a little bit. Particularly liked the critical lens that was applied to our history, and who is often put front and center. Not to mention the quotes from gay writers that connected perfectly to the history of what happened in the spaces you get to see.
The walk is accessible and there are no stairs, just the occasional old European brick road, so for wheelchair users this tour should work.

Really interesting and personal tour. Henk is a fantastic guide with an enormous amount of knowledge. Way less boring than other walking tours I’ve done in the past, with a focus on the rich queer history of the city. While the tour obviously appeals to the LGBTQIA+ community, we came with a broad group of people some within and some outside of this group and everyone found it extremely interesting. Would reccomend to anyone who loves history of any kind.

This was an excellent tour for understanding the history of LGBTQ Amsterdam. From historical hangings to the modern ideals of tolerance and acceptance (with a major and very interesting dip into the gay resistance during WWII); I was entertained, enlightened, proud, and left with things to think about. Henk is an excellent guide.

We booked Henk's tour as part of a conference for queer archivists. Doing a tour for 'queer history professionals' can be tough but Henk did a really good job presenting an interesting overview of Dutch queer history, teaching us facts we didn't know and telling a moving story of our big queer family. Henk is a very friendly and patient guide who is always open for questions and able to answer them.

I enjoyed meeting Henk who was very informative and passionate about the subject. The places that we visited were very interesting and relevant. He certainly showed how important a role the community within the city has played in the LGBTQI+ story of progress over many decades. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone whether members of the community or allies. In some ways it is even more important for people from outside the community to take part. LGBTQI+ history is part of everybody's history.
