Amsterdam History Walking Tour
By Amsterdam Red Light District Tours
About
During the Amsterdam History Tour you will discover some of Amsterdam’s most iconic squares, buildings, canals and old streets, while learning about the city’s history, liberal culture and Dutch people.
Our knowledgeable local guides will take you on a great walking tour straight through Amsterdam’s historic center. During this 1:45 hour tour our licensed experts explain how freedom and tolerance were born in the Netherlands and how they impacted Amsterdam’s financial development; turning a scanty fishing village into the centre of world trade.
We describe how these same values from the 16th century still shape the attitudes of today’s Amsterdammers. This Amsterdam City Tour is a feast for the eyes; so don’t forget to charge your camera!

- Belle-Noel0 contributionsFantastic tourThe tour lasted over 2 hours and it was recommended to pre book a place for a fee on their website beforehand. Those who did not and just reserved a free space were turned away due to group tours having a maximum number allowed within the city. David was the tour guide for the SANDEMANs red light district tour. He was very funny and knowledgable and there was a lot of group participation. I have been on tours where it feels like a school group and only the guide speaks, so this one was a lot of fun. It is definitely worth it paying to book a space.Written 16 July 2023
- amcampbell1430 contributionsDavid was a great tour guide! This tour is very interesting as it takes you through the Red Light District where voluntary prostitution is legal. Our guide David was very funny, but also very knowledgeable about the area and the history surrounding this infamous area of Amsterdam. It's definitely worth doing while in Amsterdam!Written 15 May 2023

- friskyfrog0 contributionsMartin is a hilarious dude! BTW the tour was awesome!A quick down and dirty guide to the history of Amsterdam with occasional soundbites about drugs, prostitution and pros/cons of paying sex workers for sex. Martijn was at times hilarious and sometimes controversial but it was all within topic and stated as matter of fact with no malice. Would recommend!Written 10 March 2020

Historic Tour In City Centre of Amsterdam!
Martin did a fabulous job of showing us around the old city centre, with lots of historic commentary, witty jokes and fun facts. There was plenty of time for questions and they all were answered. Definitely a must-do in the Netherlands!

During our vacation in September we visited Amsterdam and we signed up for the Amsterdam History Tour not really knowing what it would be like.
But I have to say that the tour exceeded our expectations! The guide Martin is a top guy and was able to make history fascinating.
I would strongly recommend anyone visiting Amsterdam to book this tour - you won't regret it!
Thanks Martin for a great afternoon.

In less than 2 hours me and my partner learned the interesting history of the city, thanks to this Amsterdam History Tour which was hosted by a local expert. It's amazing to hear and see how the Dutch were ahead of their time. They pretty much invented tolerance, liberalism and open-mindedness. Do this tour if you wanna learn a few things about the Netherlands in a fun and healthy way.

Amsterdam History Tour is a great experience!
Our group walked through Amsterdam’s centre while the local guide described the city’s history from the 1300’s through to today. Our guide was very friendly, funny and well informed! He made everybody feel welcome right from the start. Fantastic walking tour and I would tip everybody to ask for Martin when booking this Amsterdam History Tour.

The Amsterdam History Tour is well worth it!
This is a super informative and fun walking tour together with a local expert! We had Martin and he was without a doubt the best tour guide I ever had. Within 2 hours he explained all the must-knows about Amsterdam, including the history of the Golden Age that made this small city a global player. Martin is a walking dictionary! Would definitely recommend this city tour!
