      Terrific Tour
A thoroughly lovely walking tour with a great guide. Because of the season, it was just the two of us, but our guide was thorough, friendly and complete. Hard to imagine Evora would provide a three hour tour, but it did indeed. We would book this again in a heartbeat.

      Excellent walking tour
We booked a 3 hour walking tour in January. Fabio, our guide, was full of knowledge and a great storyteller about the history of Portugal, and the stories of Evora through the last 2,000 years. We loved all the different places he introduced us to that we would not have otherwise visited, like the University, and to gain more of an understanding of places we had seen on our own like the Roman Temple. Highly recommend this company and its tours.

5 Star Walking Tour of Évora
João's tour exceeded our expectations! He is a great storyteller, extremely knowledgeable about the history of Evorá and Portugal, and was able to answer any and all questions asked. Our highlights were some of his 'secret spots' he took us to, that we never would have known about. He gave excellent dining recommendations, which we tried and loved. Thank you João, for sharing your passion for this wonderful city!

Great tour to get a thorough understanding of the key points in Evora's history.
This was a fantastic tour. Joao had a seemingly unlimited supply of stories, both historical and folklore. Instead of racing down streets, pointing out buildings with random facts, we stopped for a few minutes and listened to a well-planned backstory with references that tied different stops together. Then we'd move to another spot where we'd again pause for a bit to fully understand how a site fit into the bigger story. In our opinion, this is much better than some walking tours that try to check off every single monument/building and leave you with a bunch of disjointed facts you'll never remember. We definitely recommend this tour.

      A great trip from Évora
We spent a great morning travelling around the Alentejo region with the friendly Joao. He has great knowledge and made the trip really interesting. The wine tasting at Monsaraz was excellent. Would highly recommend.

We enjoy the walk thru the old town and the knowledge from our guide made all the difference. We would not have known the things to look for/or about the builds and the history. Our guide Martin was great.! 👍 thank you..!🙏

      Do it
Joao the tour leader was amazing. Picked us up in Evora and showed us a local pottery business, then took us to Monsaraz to explore, and then for a wine tasting at a winery. Joao provided a ton of information about each place and life in the antelejo region and was a pleasure to chat with. Highly recommend this tour or another through his company.

Intimate tour off the beaten path
Excellent guide - extremely well-versed in Portuguese culture and history! He had answers to all our questions and showed us the less known (but fascinating!) culture of the greater Évora area. If you’re looking for a local guide to take you off the beaten path (and a refreshing wine tasting to cool off!) - this is the one to go for!

      Another Great Tour!
My husband and I have done many tours with João and they are always an amazing experience. We recently did the Monsaraz tour with some friends visiting from the USA with Joao’s colleague, Martin, as our guide. We had a wonderful day and even though this was my fourth time on this tour I learned a lot more! Martin was very personable and had lots of knowledge and fun/interesting facts about the sites we visited. It was a great day and our guests were very happy they had done the tour!

Great tour of the Alentejo countryside
Great tour of towns in the Alentejo region. The small group tour provided an opportunity to get out of city into the countryside. Evora is picturesque and Monsaraz was charming with great views of the river and Spain. Our guide kept us engaged and provided insights into Portugal's history and culture. The tour was complete with a wine tasting.

      Wonderful afternoon!
This was our 2nd tour with Backcountry Evora Tourism tours and this time our guide was James ("Noo Noo). He arrived on time and we were lucky it was just the two of us with our guide. We rode in comfort through the beautiful countryside outside of Evora with interesting commentary along the way about Evora, tourism, cork industry and so much else. The stop at the family owned pottery business was special, getting to see the artisans at work and we purchased a few small items to take home making them even more meaningful. We leisurely wandered the beautiful town of Monsaraz on our own, enjoying the small cobblestone streets, white washed buildings, the city walls and the bull fighting ring! After meeting up with our guide again, we had a very nice wine tasting at Ervideira Wine Shop. We sampled several of the wines and learned about the wine that they ferment under water. Getting to enjoy a glass of wine on the rooftop terrace with magnificent views was the best way to end the day. Highly recommend this tour and Backcountry Evora Tourism Tours

      Fabulous tour with Joao!
We took this walking tour on our first afternoon in Evora and were lucky to get Joao as our guide! We spent the next several hours learning about Evora, its sites and history and listening to its stories from our knowledgeable guide. Joao was a wealth of information and his love for this city was evident. We strolled like friends throughout the city taking in many of the major sites. I especially liked some of the off the beaten path stops that we made such as the theater, roman wall, the library, the family owned school uniform shop and the pastry shop where we enjoyed a sweet cheese tart (dare I say better than a pastel de nota?!). Joao spent extra time with us and we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. We did another tour the next day with this company and would highly recommend Backcountry Evora tourism tours!

      Great guide and great experience.
A friendly and charming guide with a wit and a great vibe; the walk and pace were perfect, and the storytelling was brilliant. Higlyrecomend this for anyone looking to see and hear the Evora story in 3 hours.

We had such a great time with Joao for a few hours, viewing the megaliths and cork forest!

Honestly without Joao we would have never researched this much information.
Joao picked us up promptly from where we requested and drove us around to each site, explaining in full about the environment and the landscape.
The cork forest was my favourite, it was hugely fascinating and Joao has a massive knowledge about this!
The megaliths are really cool too, Joao is so engaging and knowledgable about his beloved Evora.

Without Joao giving us a tour of the city and the area outside where the megaliths are, we would have never seen the amazing Portuguese countryside in that way so we thank you so much Joao!

If you book with Joao, you won’t be disappointed. He’s also hilarious 😁

We had to drive off road to access these Monolithic stones so be sure of your vehicle before you attempt this road.
I suggest missing the first site you come upon because you have to walk a long, narrow difficult path to view the one stone there. That was very disappointing and entails a hot dusty walk.
Continue to the larger more significant site where you won't be disappointed. Signs are up which helpfully explain the interesting history and placement of the stones.
This site is the one to see. Entry is free.
PS. Sorry I can't upload photos of the best site as they were taken on a friends phone and haven't been shared yet.

We really enjoyed the tour. Sira shared her knowledge and passion with us and it was a really interesting and informative experience. She was able to explain things in such a way that gave us insight to similar sites. She was also able to accommodate our travel and we appreciated that. Very glad we did the tour.

We had a fabulous time with Joao, who is extremely knowledgeable, personable, entertaining, and generous. He had all the patience in the world to answer my various questions about cork production when we visited the cork forest, and took extra care of us - since we were a small group - by making an impromptu stop for us so that we get to see the 'whole picture' of Evora. We cannot recommend Joao more highly, and would gladly join any of us tours in our future visit.

Joao is an exceptional guide. He is very informative offering interesting facts which he puts in context, making it easy to remember the points he is making. How cork is grown, harvested and turned into manufactured products is fascinating. Joao knows his Neolithic history and made the sites we visited come alive. Very highly recommended.

João did a great job. He is *very* knowledgeable. His English is very fluent and he had a lot of energy. My wife and I really had a good time. We did a walking tour of the town of Évora on one day, and a tour of some of the pre-historic ruins on the other. João also gave us an overview of the ecosystem of the area, including details about how cork is farmed, which was very interesting. All of it was interesting! Highly recommended.

João was really friendly and very knowledgeable with up to date information which he'd researched for this tour. He's a great guide and the whole tour was really enjoyable, with well chosen stops. The sites we visited are so interesting and João was great at answering any questions we had. The combo of the cork forest and the megalithic sites was also varied and added to how great the tour was.
    Highlight of our trip!

Joao was an amazing tour guide. His knowledge of the area was incredible, and he knows about much more than just the topic of the tour, so you can ask him pretty much anything. He showed us some amazing locations - both well-known and hidden gems. He also showed us a gorgeous view of the city at the end. Joao really makes the trip something to remember. Definitely a trip worth taking.

This is our fourth outing with João and his tours never disappoint! He has an amazing wealth of information about the area and a great personality! We did the megalithic tour which included stops at 3 megalithic sites, Roman Ruins, a talk about the cork trees and their importance to Portugal and a great view of Evora from the highest point in the area. We also had a snack of sliced black pig sausage, olive oil cookies and a local herbal drink called licor de Poejo. His tours are well priced and always offer something more than the description! He speaks perfect English, too!
