        A perfectly guided, unique experience!
Wonderful experience, that was perfectly guided! The interaction with the animals was very respectful and we were additionally provided with a lot of information about the animals and research projects, in which Terra Azul is involved. Being in the water with dolphins is simply a unique experience. A big thank you to the Terra Azul Team!

        Disappointing experience
We booked this tour in order to get some interesting info about the island, learn more about it and expand our knowledge from experienced guides (the description provided to us about this tour said it will be run by knowledgeable Biologist/Naturalist guides). But actually it has been just driving from point A to point B, to the places where we could go on our own, by our car! I understand it might be useful to have this tour for visitors without a car, but for us it was actually a total waste of time and money. The tour guides had no knowledge about the island, shared no interesting stories with us and we could feel they have arrived to the island very recently. I really don´t undertand how a guided tour can be organize without a professional guides and the company charges for it. It was very disapointing. It should be in the description that its recommended for people who are not driving, and remove the part about knowledgeable Biologist/ Naturalist.

        awesome experience
I loved the activity and all the staff; they were very helpful, knowledgeable, and also great entertainers. I really had a lot of fun even though, unfortunately, we didn't get to see any whales, which was my main goal but we did get to see dolphins and turtles.

Great experience with dolphins and sperm whales
Tour was great, Terra Azul is very responsible and take care on the Animals. First we had short briefing and than we were going to the boats. We had occasion to see common dolphins and sperm whales. I can really recommend this guide

It was such a great tour! We liked how you explained everything, what you told us about whales and dolphins. And it is good to know, that for you the main thing is to save the ocean and animals living in it!

        Amazing experience!
There were plenty of options in Ponta Delgada but we found this location more convenient to where we were staying (it's more in the middle of the island). We originally booked a slot for 12:30 but there weren't enough of people for this particular slot so the company called us immediatelly to help us find another option. The communication was so smooth, they were nice, patient and provided all the details neccessary and changed our slot for 8:30. The visit itself was amazing, we were SO lucky that day and saw a whole family of spermwhales and two types of doplhins. Our guide and other crew members were funny and sweet. Highly recommended and thank you! :)

A great trip to Furnas with lunch!
After our whale watching tour, we took the tour to Furnas and the Terra Nostra Botanic Gardens. Our guide, Sona, was very knowledgable and shared a lot of information about the areas we drove through, the Furnas area and the Terra Nostra Gardens. We had a typical Furnas lunch that was cooked in a fumerole near the little restaurant before we proceeded to the gardens. Sona lead us around the gardens telling us the history of the place and showing us the wide diversity of plantings there. We then changed and went into the hot springs pool for a relaxing soak. After we dressed, Sona showed us the fumeroles and then we stopped by the local lake and she told us the history of the gothic church by the lake. It was a great afternoon.

We went with Terra Azul on two separate trips to see Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas. It was an incredible experience and we felt lucky to have Marylou as our guide. She's so kind and knowledgeable. Booking these excursions absolutely made our trip!!

It was a wonderful and unique experience. We highly recommend
We had almost no communication from the ship when at sea, but the Azores Whale Watching TERRA AZUL did everything they could in helping us to be able to take the excursion when we arrive at the port. They were very professional in arranging the transportation. The tour was very interesting and our guide - a young lady, was very knowledgeable. She even personally helped us when walking on uneven grounds - We are senior citizens with some disability. Soaking in the hot springs was unique experience. We wish we come again. Magdalena i Howard

There were to many people an the small boat. The other Tourist were behaving like complete morons. Standing up in front of us all the time and waving their arms and cameras millimeters in front of our faces. We were not able to enjoy the trip and will remember only these people and not the animals. The guide should have stepped in and thrown these people over board if they can not be respectful.

Guide was really friendly and the boat was fast and cool.

Dear Friend, Thank you for your visit and for your feedback. We prefer to use fast Zodiac boats for a better chance to meet Wildlife in the open ocean, proximity at eye level to the animals, and well as the best adventure experience with the least possible environmental impact. However, we understand your concern regarding other visitors' behavior, and we will improve our staff training in that sense. We're always looking to improve, surely there are bumps along the way.) We hope you can understand this reasoning, and verify the reviews and comments from other visitors to revise your review to a higher star rating for our service quality. We hope to have you back for another good time, hopefully with less commotion onboard :)

We had a group of about 30 dolphins- all ages- swim and play around us and even swim beneath our little zodiac boat. I was so engaged I forgot to take pictures in the moment! Our guide Sonne was excellent both in the briefing about safety and about the ecosystem and marine life beforehand and on the boat trip itself. We went on another boat trip a couple days later in a different location (hoping for better weather that day) and the other tour company just had us sign a waiver and get on the boat. It was strange after such a warm and engaging experience at Terra Azul!

The crew was extremely attentive to our needs, doing their best to find dolphins and whales, and the zoologist did a great job. Their respect for nature was clear. When my youngest kid started feeling seasick, they let him stand in the back with the skipper, so he got well quickly and could enjoy the tour. I was sad we didn't see any sperm whale, but we saw dozens and dozens of spotted and bottlenose dolphins and a sei whale.

This is the only way I would want to do a whale watching tour, but it is not for the faint of heart and cautionary if you are prone to seasickness. There are several of the large boats that hold many people doing the whale watching tours, but the boats are large and slow. It is also for them much harder to chase down the possibilities. You cannot get nearly as close a view as you can from these smaller boats. The boat we took was much smaller, faster and more agile so we were able to go quickly from place to place. The downside of that is that it can be a much rougher ride as you dart over the waves and crash up and down. Fine for me but they warn up front that you should not do this if you have back problems – and that is no joke. There are some moments where you are sitting in the water and waiting as the smaller boat bobs up and down in the waves. This is where the seasickness can kick in and it did for a couple on our tour. We really could not have asked for much better than the luck we got on this trip. On our half day tour we got to see a Sperm Whale, Orcas, a False Killer Whale, Bottlenose Dolphins and Common dolphins. All within 30 feet of our boat. Totally amazing. We always go into this with the expectation that we might not see any wildlife (as that has happened before) but also we go in hopeful. The Sperm Whale being a year-round resident of the islands makes that sighting not so surprising but there are not a lot of places you can get this close to a sperm whale. Because of their size and behavior, we did not get to see a lot of this one but clearly saw the pronounced bulb on the top of the head and the tail as it dove away was very cool. The False Killer Whale was a very quick sighting as they are not as social as other species, but the crew was very happy to see this rare sight. What was the best part of the trip though was seeing the Orcas. The captain of the boat had not seen any in 5 years, our marine biologist Ana had never seen them locally and another staff member who had never seen them came on the trip with us just hoping to see Orcas with us. The latter two were so excited to see them that they cried a little. How amazing that is to see something so rare in this area that the crew who does this every day has such a strong reaction. The crew was great. As Jen was one of the people who got sick, Ana and the crew were amazingly caring during the situation while still providing an informative and pleasurable experience. Definitely a top option on the island to do some whale watching.

My daughter and I took this tour during our recent trip to Sao Miguel. It was a fantastic experience and actually exceeded our expectations! Seating on the boat was comfortable and well-designed and we felt secure at all times. Their system of allowing one side of the boat to stand at a time depending on which side the animals are on was perfect—it allowed everyone to view and photograph the whale and dolphins and loggerhead turtle, as well as numerous seabirds, we encountered during our trip. Our guide Astrid was knowledgeable and a lot of fun, and she explained everything very clearly. As this was my first ever whale watching trip, I can’t compare it to others, but I highly recommend a tour with Terra Azul to anyone visiting the island.

We had a great time with the whale watching tour. Exceptional was the introduction by the guide Anna, who told us all about the whales and dolphins in the area and about what to expect and what to take care of. We were lucky to see a playful group of Risso's Dolphins which was really active. Also some common dolphins joined the tour. Far out we saw a group of sperm whales. There were many boats looking at the whales and our guide let us watch for a while but then said we should give the whales some quiet. That was great to see them respecting the whales. On the way back some dolphins swam at some distance and we had a great look at flying fish. Throughout the trip, Anna explained everything very professional and gave details of the ocean, the animals and so on.
In the end we drove around the Islet of Vila Franca do Campo.

Your company was recommended to us by Ali from the Gin Library due the fact that they are just as involved with the whale preservation and conservation mission that he believes in! Boy am I so happy we went with this tour! At first we were afraid perhaps due to the type of boat it would be too choppy in the water, or we would get soaked! Neither were the case! We had a fabulous time. They also provided heavy rain coats, and Water proof bags to use free of charge! We had packed extra clothes and towels, and none of them were needed. Now to the tour, simply AMAZING! Our guide was Aurora (hopefully I spelt that right) and she was phenomenal, literally she did the entire tour in 3 languages to accommodate everyone on the boat. You could tell this truly was her passion as she was explaining the different whales, dolphins! Terra Azul you have a GEM with her, be sure to keep her around! Our tour was so lucky we saw SEVERAL Sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, and common dolphins on our trip. The secondary part of this tour that I don't think people realize is that the view from the boat of the shoreline and island is spectacular, something you don't get anywhere else but literally on a boat! The tour brought us into the Islet and next trip we want to go in and do the snorkeling as it looked amazing. The water was so blue at points there, our pictures won't do it justice!

We booked a whale watching tour in the morning combined with lunch and a snorkelling visit to Islet of Villa Franca do Campo. From a well equipped zodiac with place for some 30 people we spotted sei whales, sperm whales, atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins, with full respect to their well being (not too close and not too long). The guide (sorry, forgot her name) was super friendly and spoke 4 languages effortlessly. The ocean was calm so the ride was very smooth. Hot lunch was served in a local restaurant right next to the fishing harbour. The fish was of outstanding quality and the waiters very friendly. The afternoon tour was not guided by Terra azul, they just provided snorkelling gear and had reserved the tickets for the ferry, which was really nice because the maximum amount of visitors to the island is 400 per day and tickets were completely sold out. The islet is well worth a visit if you like snorkelling and/or swimming and can handle an afternoon without shade.

This experience absolutely exceeded my expectations. It was very professionally organized and facilitated, super informative, and we did see spectacular whale activities. Though we seem to have also been lucky, rest assured that this group (the guide, the driver, and those screening the ocean from the island with binoculars) will do their very best to ensure you see the whales. Our guide, Aurora was also really friendly and again very professional, not to mention that her bubbly and cheerful personality created a fun atmosphere. 100% recommended!

We did this tour twice, both times we were fortunate enough to see some amazing wildlife!
As always with whalewatching it's a bit of a gamble with how much (or anything) you're going to see, so we recommend travelers to manage their expectations accordingly. The recent sightings can be checked at the office in Villa Franca.

The tour starts with a brief but informative presentation regarding the species of whale and dolphin to be found around the Azores, also a safety brief regarding the boat.

Both tours the guides and skippers were professional and knowledgable about the things we see, and offer plenty of time to view and photograph the wildlife.
The skipper takes care not to bother the animals, on any sign that the animals are taking offence to our presence we take our leave. Whenever possible engines are also turned off.

Reservations for tours tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to make yours early. Best thing is to book these before you arrive at the Azores, depending how long you stay.
You are able to book tours a week or so in advance, but these slots might not be your prefered choice.

The website offers easy selecting and reserving of tours. Payment can be done with creditcard (either deposit or full) PayPal, banktransfer and cash at the office. If I have to think of anything that can be improved, it's the possibillity to be able to pay with bankcards at the office. We were not able to do so the first tour, so we had to rely on a hasty bank transfer. Fortunatly the staff was very lenient about this.

All in all we would very much recommend this whalewatching tour operator!
