We did the free walk tour and Francisco was so interesting in delivering stories and facts that it became obvious we had to do Sintra with him and we visited the Quinta da regaleira; It’s a half day trip, if you like history, mythology, architecture don’t think twice. I recommend to be with a guide it makes the experience more relevant and you won’t miss anything. Francisco was a great tour guide very passionate and proud to tell us about the history of the site. We enjoyed every minute of the trip. Do it you won’t be disappointed !

Had a great chance to spend another tour with Francisco on a half day tour of Sintra. Great company for all tours. Fantastic guides from 7 different tours across Europe. This tour was filled with history and great sites for pictures. Tour meets in a center and departs on a train which is an extra 5 euro per person round Trip. These tickets are available for purchase from the meeting point of departure for those who do not have the euro pass. A good hike, all uphill. Plenty of breaks for history and a snack/drink. Well worth the trip if you have the time. After the trip you can spend as much time as you like in Sintra before you head back to Lisbon.

Did a walking tour with Rita today. Started in Lisbon and took a train to Sintra. Rita was excellent, she has a great knowledge of history and presented things in a very interesting and captivating way! She was kind, patient, funny, and very helpful. She has an excellent command of the English language! Highly recommend.

Need to know that this is really a one-day trip, with a 40-minute train ride at each end at additional cost. Also it's a walking trip. Very long explanations means not many Sintra sites can be visited in the time available. Sintra is fascinating, widespread and hilly, so needs really much more than a day to do it justice.

Hi Explorer787626,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us and for choosing us in Lisbon. We love to hear back from engaged travellers such as yourself, as your feedback helps us to continue making improvements and ensure that tours and experiences promoted by SANDEMANs NEW Europe meet the high standards that travellers expect of us.
We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met on this occasion. Whilst the tour’s route, content and inclusions/exclusions (like transportation) are listed on our website and marketing material, the independent guides we work with may alter the tour in order to suit their own style and each group’s dynamic. We feel this adds a personal touch that makes tours promoted by SANDEMANs fresh and unforgettable, but it may also mean that the tour’s stories and sites are not in line with every guests’ preferences which, unfortunately, can be a difficult situation to avoid. While on the whole, the vast majority of guests are extremely satisfied, we do state on our promotional material that all the tours do differentiate from one another due to the individual nature of the guides we work with.
Thank you once again for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. We hope this experience will not prevent you from joining us again in the future.
All the best,
The SANDEMANs Team

I took the trip with Jorge. He was my guide on the Alfama walking tour. His stories and knowledge and personal insight really made the trip worthwhile. This tour does NOT include the Castle or Pena Palace as they are not locations that are easily "walkable."
Those could easily be done on a separate trip.

Half-day tour to Sintra was my second Sandemans tour with Jamie with whom I had a walking tour of Alfama a couple of days earlier. He made the first experience so unique and unforgettable that I decided to go to Sintra with him again. He did not disappoint! What an amazing place, full of rich history, and charming beauty. Sintra is a must-see place and the best way to do it is with the tour guide like Jamie. He was excellent, with a great sense of humor, very informative, and knowledgeable. He made me fell in love with Portuguese history. I have learned so much. We took a train from Lisbon to Sintra. He walked me through the city and its castles, sharing the stories of people who lived there over the centuries. We stopped at the local pastry shop to have traditional local pastry and browsed the streets of this quaint little town. The highlight of the tour was a visit to Quinta da Regaleira castle and garden, with a famous initiation well. I enjoyed my tour and time in Sintra immensely. Thanks for the job well done, Jamie!

Jamie was an excellent guide, his passion for Portuguese History was felt by the whole group and it felt like I got easily 10x the information than if I had gone to explore on my own. Well worth it.

I’ve been to Sintra before, but only to the National Palace and then our tour promptly left. I felt like I was cheated out of seeing the very quaint town. This trip was much different.
We started out walking to the train station, then arriving in Sintra with our guide Fred suggesting we start the trip off with Sintra yummy pastries. Fred took us by several different places and was so knowledgeable about Sintra. We then went to Quinta da Regaleira. This place is not to be missed! It is so beautiful and the Initiation well is amazing!
All in all, it was a great day.

So the tour group travels from Lisbon to Sintra on the train. Does everyone find their own way back to Lisbon? I am wondering if we can stay later in Sintra if we want to see more then is included in the tour.

When the tour ends then you can either go back to Lisbon with the guide, go with a later train (this is what I did as I wanted to look a round a bit more) or stay in Sintra all-together.
So it's up-to you. There is a train back almost every hour.
Does this tour include transportation to and from Lisbon, if not, how do we get to Sintra?
Jaanika P
Tallinn, Estonia36 contributions
The transportation card is not including but you are able to buy your return from the tour-guide at the start of the tour, it was 5€ i believe.
Or if you have the travel card and use zapping or you have the daily transport ticket then this will be enough as well and applies also to Sintra trains.

Hola !
