About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Pioneer4802900 contributionsAvoid this company. They represent everything that is bad about Madeiran hospitality. The most awful experience we have ever had in 65 years of holidaying. Our party of 5 elderly people including an 80 year old and having paid some £145 we were asked to get off our ‘Viator’ Full Day East of Madeira Tour at the central Bus station because we complained about the lack of leg room in our seats for what was advertised as a 6 hour trip. The consequent inability of some of our party to 'buckle up' also compromised their safety. The vehicle had 22 seats with others apart from us grumbling about their 'leg room'. In contrast our West side tour a few days before at the same price also with 'Viator' had been an absolute pleasure with a knowledgeable and friendly host driving a vehicle with just 8 comfortable seats. After picking us and others up the Driver of the East Tour spent 50 minutes driving like a ‘madman’ over ‘speed bumps’ around the centre of Funchal throwing us around in our seats without any indication as to what he was doing or what was planned. Once the driver was aware of our concerns he agreed to discuss them and our options outside of the bus. Having all got off, the Driver made a phone call, and said that another vehicle would come and pick us up and then drove off. However after 30 minutes wait with no other vehicle arriving we called the trip organiser. We were told no vehicle was coming and that we had asked to get off! We had to pay for a taxi ride back to our hotel. A full refund for a tour we did not take has not been forthcoming.Written 29 October 2024
- 63susie0 contributionsHalf day tour with friendly driverBrilliant trip, the guide was so knowledgeable and great fun. Nuns Valley is well worth a visit, the views are amazing and following the sledges down a very steep hill was a great experienceWritten 19 October 2024
- 63susie0 contributionsFab location but not user friendlyThis tour was spoiled by the guide, who prioritised trying to sell us a meal at a friends restaurant rather than concentrating on the trip. Twice he gave driver instructions to drive away from a stop when there were still people not boarded. It was left to us passengers to makes sure everyone was aboard. The timing of the stops was very vague ie.Be here 20 or 30 mins. No outline/timing of the trip was given at the beginning and it seemed to revolve round what time we could arrive at said restaurant ,with a couple of random stops thrown in.to accomodate the food orders. Initially he used the microphone, but gave up using this and he couldnt be heard at the back. The transport was very uncomfortable, narrow seats, inefficient air conditioning. I would not reccomend this.trip.Written 19 October 2024
- clairewhitt20190 contributionsA stunningly beautiful walkA stunningly beautiful walk in amazing lush green laurisilva forest in the mountains, along the levada routes to Risco waterfall and the 25 fontes as well as the tunnel out towards Calhetta. Philippe our guide was brilliant! He told us so many interesting facts about the area and all the different plants and wildlife and it's clear how much he loves sharing it with people. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather as it was very clear all day. The walk is paced to suit everyone as we had a range of ages. It's a relatively easy walk if you are used to walking with some steps and sleepy sections but generally gentle gradients or flat. Can be slippy in places and near the falls and especially in the tunnel it is wet underfoot so boots are advisable, as is a torch and a rain jacket. It's easy to see why this is such a popular walk, one not to he missed and the tour company were excellent.Written 17 September 2024
- Voyage4022540 contributionsQuite good but some things not as promisedThe tour started by picking us up from our hotel in Caniço, which was very convenient. However, we were the last ones to board and they only had 2 seats left in the Renault Master van and they were single seats at the very back (we went as a couple). A very selfish girl sat at the front next to the driver/guide alone, on the double seats. The aircon in the van was broken, not working at all. In the morning this was not an issue, but later on in the afternoon it turned out to be a serious problem. In the van only the two front door windows can be rolled down. The selfish girl kept rolling her side up as she was bothered by the airstream that was blowing into her face, not considering the rest of the people (like 14 people) sitting in the back in the hot temperature and without much air and air movement. She was later dealt with but the lack of aircon proved to be a major inconvenience in the afternoon. The guide was friendly, helpful and nice, he is belgian so perfectly fluent in English and German and I am sure he speaks a few other languages fluently, too. He is an older bloke and had a lot of non-PC, boomer jokes, some of them sexist, etc, I was not offended but some of the younger generations might be. The first stop was absolutely pointless in our opinion, but from the second one onwards the views during the drive and at the stops were really breathtaking and amazing. The guide regularly stops at plants and trees (mainly fruits) and tells you what they are and a few info about them. Makes it very interesting. We got full cloud coverage at the top of the 2nd highest peak, so even though it was very misterious and cold (! only 10 degrees celsius, be prepared!) we got zero view from the top of the peak whatsoever. Obviously it's nothing that can be helped, it was noone's fault. The view was supposed to be spectacular. :( There was NO WIFI on board either, so prepare for that. Other than these inconveniences it was good, especially the last stop at the north-east corner of the island. Thank you for the tour!Written 13 September 2024
- annbZ6594DR0 contributionsA Thrilling AdventureOur jeep safari through Madeira was an unforgettable experience. The tour took us off the beaten path, where we got to explore the rugged terrain, lush forests and stunning scenery. The thrill of riding through narrow, bumpy roads made it more exciting. Our driver/guide was knowledgeable, friendly and funny; sharing facts about Madeira's history, fauna and flora. Overall, the jeep safari was an exhilarating way to see Madeira's natural beauty. A must do tour. Highly recommended.Written 26 August 2024
- JFS06190 contributionsDay trip in east MadeiraAnother excellent tour with Flora, led by the fab Tim. - Traveler217534911650 contributionsSight seeing spots of the East of MaderiaLovely tour by Alberto and his vast knowledge of the Island and landscape. He'll provide you with some useful facts about the vegetation and climate. The views at Pico do Arieiro are well worth it and the short levada walk is fun, for kids and people of all ages. This tour has many places for a good photo with scenic views from above. Recommend if this is your first time to the IslandWritten 18 August 2024
- 309jessicat0 contributionsNever again.I couldn’t do it, first they were supposed to be in a traffic jam, then, after more than an hour, they just forgot to pick me up. I had to text and call them to check the situation all the time. I give them 1 star cause, at party least, they refund me as soon as they realize about the situation.Written 20 July 2024
- E8013XCmartinm0 contributionsGreat sceneryAs we were arriving by cruise ship we were picked up on time near the cruise terminal. We were taken to the north of the island and the guide thoughtfully stopped off en route so we could stock up on some snacks. The views on the walk were amazing but be aware there are some steep steps but nothing too bad. Magno our guide was excellent with a good sense of humour. It's a seven mile walk so wear sturdy footwear.Written 16 July 2024
- cathrs960 contributionsExcellent tourThis tour was great. It lets you see a lot of the island. The views at Pico do Arieiro are stunning! We also did a short optional levada walk which also stopped at a nice viewpoint. All in all, a good day!Written 6 July 2024
- geomad9910 contributionsBrilliant hikeWe had a totally brilliant day on the guided pico to pico hike. Coming to Madeira we had planned to do the hike solo but were glad that we ended up booking this guided tour with Philip. He was an excellent guide, and really took the time to make sure everyone was OK. The pace was spot on and there was plenty of opportunities to stop for photos - at no point did it feel like he rushed us. We were also very lucky with the weather at pico de ariero which made the experience even more special. Loved it!Written 18 May 2024
- Sarah N0 contributionsInteresting and entertaining tour.Today was a wet and sometimes windy , misty day. Tony our driver and guide drove us safely over the mountain tops, and made the tour entertaining and informative. His English is really excellent. He made sure we got the most out of the day despite the weather!Written 22 March 2024
- manxman6780 contributionsTour not as described. This Ihla tour was not as described. The maximum number on the tour was stated to be 16. There were 38 on our tour. As they used a 40 seater coach rather than a minibus the itinerary had to be altered as the coach was unable to access parts of the route. No notification nor apology was given. The guide was informative and knowledgeable, unfortunately we could only understand a limited amount of commentary as our speaker at the rear of the aged bus was poor.Written 17 March 2024
- TPAT750 contributionsFantastic! This is a fantastic hike on a good weather. If you don’t fancy going back the same way, however, I highly recommend a guided hike that takes you down along a much shorter and much easier route to a different pick up point. You’re not going to be there alone anyway so you might as well go with a group.Written 16 March 2024

After waiting in the reception in the morning our hotel that made the booking contacted Ilha Tours, but they told there was a mistake and the tour being overbooked.
After some negotiations they offered to catching up and alternative tour to the east part of Madeira. Being the last couple boarding that bus the only seating was at the back seat without windows.
Not showing up and offering a bad alternative without any excuse deserves the bad rating.
