The ancient sanctuary and its monuments are universally the ultimate symbols of the classical spirit and civilization. With its fine artistic and architectural form, the Acropolis is the greatest heritage bequeathed by the Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the fifth century BC, Athens celebrates the significant victory over the Persians and establishes democracy, achieving a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. In the years that follow, art and thought flourish and the ambitious Athenian statesman Pericles coordinates a unique group of artists to transform the rocky hill into the exceptional monument also called the “Sacred Rock”. The Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena are the greatest monuments built during that time.
