About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- nataliegJ6165YU0 contributionsBeautiful beach not enough time thereWished there would be more time at the beach. The stop in the village is not necessary. We would of rather stayed longer on the beach.Written 8 October 2024
- Roving627684121010 contributionsValue for moneyGreat trip. It was very well organised. All schedule was clearly communicated so everybody knew what to expect. We had sufficient time in Balos and Gramvousa. It was a lot of people on the boat, but everybody could find space to seat and enjoy the views. Food and drinks are accesible on the boat and prices are not that expensive. Departure times of the boat were displayed everytime we were leaving the boat so everybody knew exactly what time it departures. There was a bridge from boat to the beaches so there was no need to swim... Overall it was great experience and as I have mentioned all schedule was displayed and communicated in the bus so there was no suprises. Driver and tour quide took great care of us so the whole journey was comfortable and with no stress at all.Written 26 September 2024
- garyhb20180 contributionsAmazing tripThe tour guide Sylvia was fantastic and made sure everyone was ok, walking down the gorge was beutiful and can be done in your own pace but you still need to have some small fitness about you. Would do this again if I come back to Crete.Written 14 September 2024
- RablerT0 contributionsBalos is not what it is said to be!We booked through io tours, but were dissapointed with the trip. The boat we were on took 1000 people and several other smaller ones arrived while we were at Balos. If the beach is ideal when quiet, it certainly isn't with 1000+ people arriving at a time. The bus trip back from the ferry was chaotic taking over 2 hours from landing with the ferry and the tour guide leaving the bus part way back with no briefing on what was to happen. One trip and one company to avoid.Written 10 September 2024
- JarekS3750 contributionsWell worth it.Great adventure , beautiful views all along the way and well organised.Good transfer to and from the Samaria Gorge.I would recommend it to all that like hiking.Written 30 August 2024
- Maria S0 contributionsGreat day with my teens 😅Nice Trip with very kind & experienced driver (dangerous way to the beach) and also very good and friendly guide, she knew very good a history of the island and told us the most important things… it was very hot and no shade please on the beach because of lot visitors but the weather it was a great & beautiful place and a very nice full day trip with finally a great meal at the family Taverne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Written 23 August 2024
- Curiosity149321809600 contributionsDo bus tour vs driving yourselfA nice bus tour to Elafinisi. Elia provided interesting information about Crete along the way. You can also rent umbrellas from them for 7 EUR which we recommend. The beach is crowded but less crowded if you walk to the right side. Didn’t see any pink sand but that was expected. Bring water shoes as walking through the water is quite rocky. Do the tour vs. driving yourself as the road can be narrow in some places.Written 14 August 2024
- I5958FGjennifers0 contributionsStunning beachesIt was a good experience. We went to sightsee and for the kids to snorkel. I was hesitant about the reviews about receiving pick up info, but ours was very straight forward. Told the day before as promised. Our guide was very informative and helpful. The ferry was busy and the only downside of the whole thing, which is not the fault of the organisers. It was more that the other people aboard don’t want to create space for others to sit down, which we found difficult with a family of four. Disembarking at Balos was slow but we didn’t need to wade through the sea as other reviews suggested. Maybe this is a new addition. Gramvoussa was easier to disembark due to more space once we’d docked. We took our own food but the ferry was well stocked. There’s no facilities or provisions other than on the ferry. Long day but glad we went.Written 7 August 2024
- Aminre40 contributionsDisappointing Day Excursion from Rethymno to BalosI recently went on a day excursion from Rethymno to Balos, and unfortunately, it was a major disappointment. Unlike my previous experience in 2021, this time I was not informed that the boat no longer docks at Balos. Instead, it stops 10 meters away from the shore, forcing passengers to disembark into deep water. Disembarking was chaotic and frustrating, taking over 1 hour and 45 minutes to get everyone off the boat. Many people struggled because they couldn't swim, adding to the chaos. It's baffling that the government prohibits boats from docking in Balos Bay but allows them to stop 10 meters away. This rule seems nonsensical and severely impacts the experience. When I raised these concerns with our guide upon arriving in Kissamos, his response was dismissive: "You don’t have to leave the boat, or you can get a private boat for £200." This lack of empathy and solutions was disheartening. What was once a fun excursion in 2021 has become a waste of time. I wouldn't recommend this trip to anyone in its current state. The organizers need to address these issues, but it seems they are more interested in taking tourists' money. Save yourself the frustration and look for alternative experiences.Written 21 June 2024
- 943theab0 contributionsGreat wiews butAmazing wiews and the best trip we’ve been to in Crete. Everything was great planed and the guide was good. But the only thing is that we had to ”swim” to Balos from the boat, and they said to leave our stuff behind. Me and my friends did not want to leave without all our belongings in a locker or something so we just stayed on the boat. So the fact that we did not know everything before hand is the only ”bad” thing, otherwise we loved it.Written 11 June 2024
- chris s0 contributionsBitterly disappointed we arrived in good time to and they told us we weren't going to balls for technical reasons no other reasTerrible seemed a waste of a day and money. - MathijsD340 contributionsBeautiful day!The day started off with a bus trip to the Gorge, with some explanation by the guide which was greatly appreciated. The Gorge itself is a beautiful hike, and loved the swim in the bay of Sfakia. Thank you to the operator for adding us last minute!Written 28 April 2024
- scritchen0 contributionsGreat tour of KnossosGreat tour of Knossos and Heraklion from Chania. It took a while to pick up everyone from all the hotels, but the trip itself was excellent. The tour guide (can't remember her name) was excellent and very friendly and knowledgable. Timings were just right. The Heraklion archaeological museum was fantastic, definitely worth going. The bus was a 30 seater rather than a full size 50 seater, it was okay rather than luxurious.Written 27 April 2024
- mathijsdavid0 contributionsGreat hike! The tour guide gave a lot of information during the bus ride, which was greatly appreciated. The hike through the gorge was very beautiful, and took about 2 hours. Also enjoyed the swim in the small bay afterwards. Great day, would certainly do it again!Written 24 April 2024

Hiking Samaria Gorge is a must-do experience if you are fit and can walk 16+ km.
Its an absolutely beautiful walk that you can do at a moderate pace ending in a lovely dip in the Libyan sea. The tour group is organised and helpful, they picked us up in Chania really early so that we were one if the first groups to start the hike and we mostly hiked in the shade. The tour’s communication was good and the guide was knowledgeable and experienced. It was a small group in a private van, we all wore masks and the tour was in English which was helpful to us. We stopped for a snack and coffee on the way there and the tour guide had hiking sticks available for hire if needed. There is fresh cold water available every few km so you just need to carry your own food and one water bottle. The first 4km have some steep downhill sections that require concentration but overall it isn’t a difficult hike as there are few uphill parts and we felt safe at all times. There are lovely rest stops with clean bathrooms on the way, you just need stamina, sunscreen or a hat and comfortable hiking shoes to complete it.
Once completed, you have time to enjoy the sea and have a late lunch before you take a big ferry to Scouda. Its very busy in the town so get to the ferry stop with time to spare. The tour takes you back to your hotel or a main meeting point after a scenic drive. Its a whole day activity. We really enjoyed it and although my legs were sore the next day, it was a highlight of our trip. I would not recommend this hike for anyone not used to walking long distances or unwell as the terrain is uneven and some spots require strength and speed but if you are relatively fit, it is a wonderful experience. Thank you to the tour.

TIPS: Take food and snacks for breakfast and to refuel during your hike.
Yes, There IS water, however, it is the water from the stream that hikers wash their hands in. There is no other water available so take your own! The guide told us that’s what everyone drinks. “ We do it all the time .” On the way to the trailhead there is a stop at a tiny place where coffee, OJ, and some pastries are available BUT 4 buses stopped at the same time. The line is LONG and you may want to get in the bathroom (WC) line first.
Once you exit the canyon be prepared to continue your walk on a concrete and rock path for another mile. You’ll get to a refreshment stand. Don’t stop at the first one with the long line - there are more. Continue walking straight and you’ll get to the sea. Walk past the ferry dock. You’ll see beach chairs and umbrellas. You can rent them for 7 Euros OR they are free if you purchase food/drinks. It’s a bargain. There was someone waiting tables. Beer was 4 Euros.
You can eat at a restaurant in the town. From the beach you can see a “Supermarket” sign. The restaurants are all just past the sign. OR you can spend your time at the beach. We were told to meet the tour guide at 4:30 for our ferry tickets. The group takes the last ferry at 5:30 pm. You can keep your chairs at the beach and just go pickup the ferry tickets & return to your chairs. The ferry loaded after 5:00 and left the dock at 5:29. You’ll be able to see the ferry from your chairs.
As you get on the ferry sit on the LEFT side. The views are gorgeous and you are out of the sun. The ferry travels west.
On the return bus ride home sit on the passenger side (right side of bus as you face forward). Views are stunning on the return.
Pickup at 6:00 am and drop off at 8:30 pm since we were the last stop.
Bus ride was comfortable and clean.

The tour guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. The gorge was stunning. As we were the first bus there (and went at pace) we were able to see the gorge without others around. Would recommend hiking boots as the downhill is quite steep at first. Overall a great experience. The only downside was the restaurant they stop at for breakfast which seemed to just be making up extortionate prices on the spot.

Tour all went well, pick up on time and everything went smoothly.
Only complaint is that 6am start from Chania is unnecessary and could have later start. I tried to do the walk realllly slowly but still had to wait nearly 5 hours for return boat.
It's nice to take your time for sure but the start could have been hour or 2 later. Instead there was a freezing cold stop at an obscenely expensive cafe for 30 minutes.

The hiking trail itself requires you to have proper footwear (ankle support), as it is mostly rocky and is around 16 km long. Other than that, Samaria Gorge is well worth the effort to get there and then come back.
Make sure you have some food with you. And yes, a single bottle of water is enough, there are enough places where you can refill it. Trained people might not need the starting bottle at all.
As a last note, if you rented a car it is possible that you do all of this by yourself. Stop the car at the gorge entrance, buy your own entry tickets, do the hiking, buy ferry tickets at the exit village, then at the next stop there will most likely be people who will take you back to the entrance for around 20 dollars (IF you do not want to negotiate).

Very well organized activity! Communication before the tour with the pick up location was perfect. The hike itself was very nice and you could rent walking sticks from the guide. Would recommend the tour company and everyone was very friendly! Just keep in mind if you’re staying in the old city you will be the first picked up and the last dropped off in the evening.

Each and every step is painful to the core after the 7th km (resting area). It’s a stunning gorge but the small, narrow paths and many pebbles, rocks, and stones you have to step on, make it a very long and rather painful day. Extremely challenging to complete the 13km to the end of the gorge and it doesn’t help when there’s 35 degrees and there’s so many people trying to squeeze past you, putting you in panic mode and under pressure to move faster.
The worse thing is I was charged over 40€ (trip advisor online) and people on the bus were charged 28€. The price doesn’t include 5€ entry fee and 11€ for the boat back to the bus.

This excursion basically does the organising of getting to and from Samaria Gorge for you ie a ‘taxi’ (by means of a large coach) and ticket purchasing service. No frills!
Picked up at hotel at 6:20am with a stop near the gorge at a taverna for toilets and refreshments to purchase then arrive at the gorge at approx 09:30. Note toilets in the gorge are very basic unsanitary holes in the floor so make the most of this stop! The guide accompanying the coach does not guide you through the gorge so you are expected to find your own way down it and given a pick up time (5pm) at the seaside village where the ferry leaves from. If you get to the village in good time you will have chance for a meal/drink/dip in the ocean (stony beach) before leaving. You need to be in very good health, good walking shoes or non slip sturdy trainers required as most is downhill on loose and slippy stones - lots of concentration required. Our trackers measured 21km of walking (didn’t get the minibus at the gorge exit which is an optional 2-3 euro at the exit gate). The Gorge is beautiful especially once you get down to the river bed. The multitude of people do spoil it somewhat. The guide on the bus was abit brusque with everyone but she got the job done. You do need cash for the entrance ticket to the gorge and ferry as she collected it all in on the bus and purchased all the tickets. The exact money would be preferable.

This trip is very well organised and an easy way to explore the Gorge. Pick up was quite early for us (5:45am), but this meant we arrived at the Gorge before it got too busy. The Gorge itself is absolutely beautiful and like nothing we have ever seen before. While still on the bus journey, approximately 3 miles from the start of the Gorge, you stop off at a little cafe - we had not had chance to buy any provisions beforehand so this was useful for us to buy a few bits for the walk. You will only need 1 water bottle as there are fill up stops every few miles, however take some snacks as there is nothing between the small cafe and the very end. The trek took us around 6.5hours overall (we are in our early 20s), but this was taking our time to take in the beauty around us. The ferry at the end does not depart until 5:30pm so there is no rush to finish. Once you exit the Gorge you head down to the beach where there are some shops and beautiful taverns - the food was excellent. We had a few hours to spare so just spent it getting food and sitting at the beach. The ferry journey is around 50minutes, then the journey back to your pick-up location begins. We were picked up at 5:45am and dropped off at 8:15pm so a long day but well worth it!

Very nice park, very easy walk for normal fit people without disabilities. Worth it, but the loooong wait made it almost not. When you are done you have to wait for almost 4-5 hours for the boat to take you to the bus. Obviously depending on how quick you do the hike. Meanwhile you are stranded in a place designed to charge money for low quality food and drink. Restaurants at the small village you wait were no good. The guide will tell you to meet up with him at a certain restaurant to deliver boat tickets home, do not let that decide which restaurant you eat at. All of them are no good, so you really have to choose the least sh** one.

I am staying in Malia. What is the best way to get to Chania, do you offer hotel pick ups from where I am staying?

I’m looking to do this hike this weekend but we are staying in Makronas, just south of Kissamos. How do we get picked up from Chania? Do we drive to Chania and arrange a pick up or meet at the Gorge?

Dont meet at the Gorge, you wont be able to get back when you get to the bottom. The trip is better done from Chania, the whole bus-gorge- boat - bus back is usually one package. Just buy tickets online for the whole trip from chania.. I think this is the simplest way
