About
There is no better way to experience the real side of Crete, than to traverse the island's unspoiled soil, swim in its crystal waters and stroll down its traditional villages. This hiking tour of the Samaria Gorge will give you the opportunity to do all 3 and at your own pace. Early in the morning, you will be picked up from designated spots around Chania via a luxurious bus and reach the starting point of your tour in Omalos Plateau around 7 am. Shadowed by the adjacent White Mountains and with plenty of drinking water to be found along the way in many natural springs, this self-paced hike will create unique memories for every traveler. Behind your group, there will always be a hiking escort to ensure everyone's safety and provide assistance if needed. At around 17:00 you will start your trip back to the place where you were picked up from.

Excellent tour very well organised. The gorge is 16kms of stony downhill paths and can be challenging if you feel all stones are out to trip you up!
A great achievement to finish and make it back for the boat

It was relatively easy and very beautiful. I enjoyed how clean it was there, except for the toilets. There was all the proper guidance from our tour guides and all was very well organized.

A very well organised tour, great communication before the pick up and during the tour. We were picked up early in the morning, so we got to he gorge quite early.
The gorge is amazing, please wear proper footwear, and bring a bottle of water with you, that you can refill from the stream.
Once you exit the gorge, it is extra ordinary that you can take off the heat by swimming into the amazing clear waters of Libyan sea.
Highly recommended!!

Tour all went well, pick up on time and everything went smoothly.
Only complaint is that 6am start from Chania is unnecessary and could have later start. I tried to do the walk realllly slowly but still had to wait nearly 5 hours for return boat.
It's nice to take your time for sure but the start could have been hour or 2 later. Instead there was a freezing cold stop at an obscenely expensive cafe for 30 minutes.

TIPS: Take food and snacks for breakfast and to refuel during your hike.
Yes, There IS water, however, it is the water from the stream that hikers wash their hands in. There is no other water available so take your own! The guide told us that’s what everyone drinks. “ We do it all the time .” On the way to the trailhead there is a stop at a tiny place where coffee, OJ, and some pastries are available BUT 4 buses stopped at the same time. The line is LONG and you may want to get in the bathroom (WC) line first.
Once you exit the canyon be prepared to continue your walk on a concrete and rock path for another mile. You’ll get to a refreshment stand. Don’t stop at the first one with the long line - there are more. Continue walking straight and you’ll get to the sea. Walk past the ferry dock. You’ll see beach chairs and umbrellas. You can rent them for 7 Euros OR they are free if you purchase food/drinks. It’s a bargain. There was someone waiting tables. Beer was 4 Euros.
You can eat at a restaurant in the town. From the beach you can see a “Supermarket” sign. The restaurants are all just past the sign. OR you can spend your time at the beach. We were told to meet the tour guide at 4:30 for our ferry tickets. The group takes the last ferry at 5:30 pm. You can keep your chairs at the beach and just go pickup the ferry tickets & return to your chairs. The ferry loaded after 5:00 and left the dock at 5:29. You’ll be able to see the ferry from your chairs.
As you get on the ferry sit on the LEFT side. The views are gorgeous and you are out of the sun. The ferry travels west.
On the return bus ride home sit on the passenger side (right side of bus as you face forward). Views are stunning on the return.
Pickup at 6:00 am and drop off at 8:30 pm since we were the last stop.
Bus ride was comfortable and clean.

The hiking trail itself requires you to have proper footwear (ankle support), as it is mostly rocky and is around 16 km long. Other than that, Samaria Gorge is well worth the effort to get there and then come back.
Make sure you have some food with you. And yes, a single bottle of water is enough, there are enough places where you can refill it. Trained people might not need the starting bottle at all.

As a last note, if you rented a car it is possible that you do all of this by yourself. Stop the car at the gorge entrance, buy your own entry tickets, do the hiking, buy ferry tickets at the exit village, then at the next stop there will most likely be people who will take you back to the entrance for around 20 dollars (IF you do not want to negotiate).

Very well organized activity! Communication before the tour with the pick up location was perfect. The hike itself was very nice and you could rent walking sticks from the guide. Would recommend the tour company and everyone was very friendly! Just keep in mind if you’re staying in the old city you will be the first picked up and the last dropped off in the evening.

This is one of the best experiences I had in Crete. You can get a ticket from Chania for a bus to take you to the Omalos plateau and then you walk down the Gorge. Then a boat pieces you up and takes you to Sfakia and from there a bus back to Chania city. You need the boat as when you arrive on the coast you are in an abandoned village with no road out. The scenery is spectacular. The walk takes a few hours an is about 16 k. Dont be fooled and buy loads of bottles of water as there are taps all the way down. Just being a single bottle to refill and snacks and sunscreen. The start is 8000 ft above sea level and the panorama is amazing.
