Highlights
  • Enjoy a long list of authentic Swedish food and drink
  • Explore the oldest traditional food hall in Stockholm
  • Get the personalized experience of a small group
  • Have a traditional mid-afternoon Swedish fika
What to expect
  • Seek out your guide at Õstermalms Saluhall, the oldest food market in Stockholm, where many businesses have been passed down through multiple family generations. Admire the intricate carvings on the interior wooden walls and eaves, which have been well-preserved for centuries.  Munch on some modern Swedish meatballs, slightly changed and much healthier than their traditional counterpart, but just as tasty. Then continue your tour with a stroll through Stureplan, an area that most tourists skip. At Kungsgatan, check out K25, an urban food court packed with Stockholm's hip young residents. Try some of the local seafood and sip a glass of white wine while you do some interesting people-watching.  Take the chill off with a visit to Chokoladfabriken for their legendary hot chocolate, made with 65% cocoa and cardamom. Then pause at Hõtorgshallen to peruse the market stalls filled with Swedish delicacies and fresh produce. At the P&B Delikatesser, taste a dizzying array of homemade products like truffles, traditional Swedish licorice and cloudberry jam. Hit up Husmans Deli for some artisan cheese, then visit Fagel & Vilt for cured meats like smoked reindeer and elk salami. Wash it down with some Norrlands Guld beer and chase it with some fresh fruit from Lisbeth Janson Frukt & Grunt.  Walk the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town, and pause at a candy store before heading to your last tasting: a traditional Swedish fika. The nation's favorite mid-afternoon or evening break consists of a kanelbullar and a strong coffee.  With a full stomach and lots of ideas about where you'll want to eat on the rest of your Swedish holiday, you'll bid farewell to your guide after this 4-hour tour.

A Taste of Local Food and Culture
Oct 2021
Our guide met us on time and was very energetic and knowledgeable. Great way to walk around the city and sample some local specialties like cheeses, fish, meats, and sweets. I really enjoyed tasting different flavors of licorice, which is a very common treat in Sweden. Overall, a very satisfying experience!

Horrible experience!!! Placed order 2 weeks prior, paid straight away. Arrived to “meeting point”. NO ONE MET US!!! Then, called “responsible” - he said booking was “missed” somehow and, they were not ready!!( but I had all confirmations, references, in app confirmation etc). What makes it worse - was “promised” that they will find solution same day or next day. But - NOTHING!!! Nobody called back, nobody reached out. SUGGEST TO AVOID THIS!!! It RUINED our plans that day, completely!!!

Wonderful way to see the city and learn about the local food. Our guide Theresa was amazing. As a local, she had great knowing the history, area and lots of food recommendations. Was also nice to spend time with others visiting from around Europe.

Guide was super friendly and accommodating (helped me find a particular/perfect shop at the end of the tour.

There will be liquorice
Our tour guide was Theresa. She was quite excellent.

The tour began at Saluhall. A listed food hall. Cheese (a staple of the Swedish diet) and other assorted delicacies. Theresa explained the background and the sourcing of everything we ate.

After Saluhall, we moved on to Ingelsta Kalkon AB. A butchers that specialises in turkey only. We got to sample the classic Swedish meatball there.

Moving on from Ingelsta, the highlight of the tour (for me), Kajsas Fisk. There were several treats on offer here. The highlight is Kajsas fish soup. As Theresa pointed out, they sell 350 litres of that soup a day. Having tasted the soup, this is no surprise. It's truly delicious.

The next stop comes with an advisory from me. I'm no fan of liquorice. Swedes however, love their liquorice. In fact, per capita the Swedes consume more sweets than anywhere else. Liquorice is a big part of that.

One of the most well-known stores in Stockholm's old town is a liquorice store with over 300 types of liquorice and liquorice ice cream. Liquorice shavings too.

Upstairs from Kajsas, there's one of the liquorice stores with every type of liquorice product that one can imagine.

So liquorice tasting it was. I could just about swallow the sweet liquorice. The salted liquorice did not agree with me and there was no way I could try the smoked liquorice thereafter. Theresa produced her extra extra salted liquorice. I declined to try that too.

Fortunately, the chocolate coated liquorice was agreeable to me. Particularly the passion fruit coated chocolate variety.

Moving on from liquorice, we walked to Chokladfabriken. A chain of chocolate stores producing world award winning chocolate. This was an intriguing stop in that one of the chocolates we tried was salted chocolate liquorice. In contrast to the raw salted liquorice, I actually found this chocolate salted version very interesting.

Finally, to end the tour, we went for a fika in the old town.

Fika is the Swedish term for a coffee and cinnamon bun break. Fikas are mandated in the Swedish workplace and have been assessed to improve productivity.

I admit that whilst here in Sweden I have been enjoying my fika breaks. The fika on this tour was no exception.

This tour was a pleasant way to spend 3 hours. The only troubling part was that Theresa had to watch us eat. It wouldn't be practical for the tour guide to be eating at every stop on the tour though. She did join in for lunch at Kajsas though.

Our guide Dara was superb. Incredibly knowledgeable of Stockholm and Swedish history. The places we visited really showcased the variety of Swedish cuisine. The two markets were wonderful and so were the dessert destinations. We capped the evening off in Old City restaurant full of charm and history. Tour was intimate and delightful. Book this tour...very good bargain.
