    Great way to discover Helsinki
A great company to have guided tours. Our guife Tilda was very interesting to listen to and couple of hours with her was not enough. If wondering what to do when in Helsinki, register for a walking tour with Red Umbrella!

    Unreliable Tour company!
We booked a walking tour with the Red Umbrella tour company for 8 people two weeks before our trip to Helsinki. The Tour operator CANCELLED a day before! We were very disappointed as we were only in Helsinki for 2 days.

Helsinki city center at a glance
Top communication skills in planning and during the tour. Our guide, Maria, n. 1. History, society and common life from a finnish point of view. Very helpful also with tips and views about Helsinki. This tour is a very efficient way to get the most important infos about the city center.

    Lovely tour
Lovely tour, lots of interesting info about the city. The pace is not too fast, plenty of stops to tell stories about the city so even our 2-year old managed to keep up.

Best tour for the main sights!
We booked on a short notice, just two days beforehand. Our guide was amazing and we had a private tour by coincidence, just me and my friend. You'll see all the main sights and the information provided was not heavily history-based but it was very fun walking around the city and getting to know some behinds of the buildings and places. Don't be afraid to go during these times - the city is not crowded!

This is a FANTASTIC tour. Our guide was amazing. She was so knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging. I really felt like I learned a lot and got some great local tips as well. I'd take this tour again if I were back in Helsinki and highly recommend!

    Helsinki free tour - fabulous
We joined Michael on a rainy day in february in Helsinki, day 1 of our 4 day stay. Michael has a unique perspective as he has lived in Finland for 7 years, has a deep knowledge of Finnish folk music, is learning to speak Finnish and comes from the UK. So he could tell stories about the history and quirks of Finland in a really entertaining way that short term tourists would miss. We visited many key sites and by the end of the tour, discovered places we wanted to return to, such as the public saunas. We even purchased salmiaki the beloved Finnish salty liquorice as treats to bring home to other family members based on his taste tests. It was a really fun way to learn more about Helsinki and what it has to offer. Cheers Suzy and Damien... Australia

    Superb Guide and Great Walk
The weather wasn't great (drizzle and cold) but our guide Maria made up for that. She walked us round the tour at a sensible pace and being a Helsinki local she was a wealth of knowledge. She was interesting in her delivery and is a great guide. This was a free tour but I was compelled to leave a generous tip at the end but no one was put under any pressure to tip. All in all an excellent tour very well done.

Great tour but too many people
Had a really knowledgeable and likeable guide called Michael but we had around 70-80 people in the group which was far too many. Max Group size should be about a third of this. Covered a small area of the city with interesting background and stories.

I have to commend the tour guide purely as he he makes the tour what it is!
If you get to be shown around by Matti then you are in for a treat. He is the most funny and eccentric Finn you will meet and he had me laughing out loud from the very start of the tour!
Our tour was on a terrible day with snowstorms etc but as a Brit this was a novelty so just added to the atmosphere.
The tour itself isn’t too detailed with not an awful lot of sites to see vs some other European city tours I have done but due to the guide it was by far one of the best. He even takes you to the smallest of corner shops which is then filled with people on the tour but that’s the sort of crazyness you’ll find yourself in.
Top marks Matti and your heist bag and keep it up!

We got to the Senate Square in Helsinki and saw the tour guide with a Red Umbrella. Unbeknownst to us, we had booked a free tour with the 'Green Cap Tours'. But, it was one of the best mistakes for us to have made. Our tour guide was Stefan a German guide who said he was living in Finland for about 2 years. Our group ended up being just 3 people not including the guide. Stefan started the tour by giving us a bit of history about Finland and taught up some Finnish. As we walked to the different attractions, Stefan had a variety of props in his backpack like a 'molotov cocktail', Finnish candies, and chocolate. After stopping by the Uspenski Cathedral and telling us about the 'sugar cube', we all grabbed some refreshments where we chatted some more with Stefan. He showed us some of the different architectures that can be found though out Helsinki. Next, he brought us to the Old Harbor where he showed us where we could and get a sauna. We follow that up by going to the Esplanadi area and then to the train station. We finally finished up at the new library where Stefan brought us in to show the various activities that they provide in the library including a music room, rooms for playing XBox/PlayStation, a 3D printing machine, etc. All in all what was suppose to be a 2 hour tour became a 4 hour adventure with someone who felt like a new friend of ours. Stefan even provided us with a PDF that had more things we could do while in Helsinki. (Stefan if your are reading this we did go to Oishi 18 and they do have 'Omakase'). To wrap things up, this we was one of the best things we did to start our tour of Helsinki! If you happen to have Stefan as a guide, greet him with a 'Moi' and his friends from the US tell him 'kiitos'.

This is a great tour for a snapshot of Helsinki. Our guide Osmo was able to give us an insight into the personality of Finnish people and point out historical buildings and the establishment of Finland over the centuries. It was very interesting and Osmo delivered it with good humour and knowledge. Highly recommend this tour.

Highly recommend this tour while in Helsinki, and especially useful to orient yourself to the City Center.
I booked the night before the tour, as I wasn’t sure how’d I feel with the jet lag. Greatly appreciated the structure of this tour in that one can join last minute.

My tour guide was Matti, and he was great! A self-described eccentric, he did a great job leading us around with a mix of history, current affairs, architecture, famous Finnish people, and stories from his own life to help us better relate to growing up in Finland. His energy and enthusiasm for his city, and his job, helped to keep the whole group interested and asking questions as we walked around Helsinki.

Whenever I go solo travelling, I always love going on the free walking tour to explore a new city. Rebecka was my guide, she was very knowledgeable, clever and personable. All the qualities needed to make a tour fun, engaging and a pleasant learning experience.

Thank you for going the extra mile, this tour has been the BEST tour I have been on so far so keep it up Rebecka and team Helsinki.

P.s I managed to find my book on Finnish culture and how to embrace the Finnish way of living, it's called 'Finding Sisu'. Thanks for the bookshop recommendation.

Stefan made us feel at home right away with his friendly attitude and light sense of humor. The tour was fun and easy to follow but included an amazing amount of information that was interesting in the moment and useful to us for the rest of our visit (such as the few Finnish words we learned.)
He used props to keep us laughing and engaged while we learned a basic history of Helsinki and the Finnish people, not just numbers and dates but with a sense of meaning and character. We never knew what he was going to pull out of his backpack next! At one point he pulled some treats out and we got to savor some Finnish flavors.
We could always understand him and could ask questions. We learned about architecture, art, culture and lots of fun facts. Strolling around chatting, it really felt like we were hanging out with a friend, which was a great welcome to Helsinki.
By the end of the tour we'd had a wonderful afternoon and had learned more than we ever could have on our own, with a sense of how to navigate all the landmarks and even left with a pdf of restaurant, museums, clubs and attractions.
Do yourself a favor and make this tour the first thing you do in Helsinki. And if you're lucky enough to get Stefan, say "moi" and "kiitos"from us!

I booked this tour well in advance and the company had my email address. They were very helpful when I contacted them initially because I had trouble booking it online. When I arrived in Helsinki I realized that the starting point of the tour was a place that was under construction. I figured that they would probably meet close by or across the street. I never got an email or a call from them telling me that they changed the location. After arriving early and looking for the tour, which was clearly not in evidence, my daughter found a notice on their instagram that the tour site had been moved to a square about a five minute walk away. By the time we made it there, the tour had presumably left. It would have been so simple to have emailed the registrants the new starting point. You get what you pay for. Very disappointing.,

Hello! We haven't updated our Instagram account for over 2 years, and it doesnt even have anything about a start location on there! So we believe you must have tried to attend a different tour. We hope that if you come to Helsinki again, we can show you Helsinki on one of our tours! 😊👍

Matti was a very talkative guide. It was very hard to ask him any questions. His knowledge of Helsinki and Finland is very good. It would have been good to be able to stop to buy a drink. I felt pressured at the end to pay him.
Why is it advertised as a free tour when it costs $8 (yes, that's cheap, but it's not free).

Our guide was very informative and provide a great deal of information about Finland’s history, religion and politics. The walk covered several churches, former palaces, and the city library. Culminating in a visit to a cathedral on Katajanokka island. The tour concludes on the island overlooking the central market.
Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this tour.
