About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Coastal2497220 contributionsA wonderful experienceWe booked the tour a few days in advance when it became clear that we would be in Husavik in time. Boarding was fine. The main part of the experience was of course the whale watching. It started with a number of puffins. Then the first humpback whales showed up. Most of them showed their fin. The highlight of the tour was a blue whale which also showed its fin. We personally preferred the classic wooden boat. It doesn't run fast but the captain managed to get us really close to the whales (Cudos !!). As it was off season there was enough space on the boat and everybody could have a good view. It also means that there are not that many boats out there. In summary again: highly recommended!Written 2 January 2025
- Culture6364660 contributionsCold wavy trip of wonder! We went out on their wooden boat Sylvia which had been the first time in a couple of weeks due to a storm. The swell was quite big but we enjoyed the trip tremendously. Our skipper & guide were fantastic! It took a little while to spot a whale, but we saw a couple of humpbacks which as a first time whale watcher was a magical experience. A pod of dolphins were seen too. The ticket office staff were also very helpful and friendly. Would certainly go with Gentle Giants again if I visited Husavik again!Written 30 November 2024
- jscottwga0 contributionsWonderful Whale Watching! This trip is a must do when in Iceland. We got to see a Humpback breach!!! Our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable of these beautiful creatures. You also get some great discounts with your ticket stub around town!Written 10 November 2024
- Elif_coban0 contributionsIncredibleA truly once in a lifetime experience, hosted by a friendly, knowledgable and very skilled crew. Staff were very understanding of our late arrival due to Ice. The tour was incredible and we were fortunate enough to see a Humpback Whale. We were well kitted for the weather and looked after. Discounts are also provided for some attractions in Husavik. Would highly recommend!Written 4 November 2024
- johnathanl4370 contributionsFun but not what I expected. Don't pay extra for this. The guides and staff were super nice, and the boat was good enough for watching the whales. It was a bumpy ride though so I would not recommend if you are very sensitive to sea sickness. When we came, we were able to see a good amount of whale sightings, but it was the same 2-3 whales that were just feeding and resurfacing for air, although in total we had about 7-8 "sightings". They did not jump out of the water or do any of that fancy stuff like I was expecting. For most of it, I just saw their tails go down into the water. Still cool though. I would recommend it if you've never done it before, but I wouldn't stress too much if you weren't able to accommodate for this on your trip. I also think that the amphibian boat is more than enough; you don't need to get the speedboat ticket since either way you will be watching from afar, and we were never too far behind the speedboats anyway.Written 29 October 2024
- beatricerT7743PR0 contributionsRespectful and interesting tourGreat tour. The guide (Matteo) was very knowledgeable and explained a lot of whales fact while we were watching them. We were able to spot three different types of whales, always from a safe distance and with respect for them. The boats don't have radars and have super silent motors to avoid bothering the animalsWritten 23 October 2024

- briens20150 contributionsSafe and personable treat for my family and ISafe and personable treat for my family and I. The company kept us well informed with texts and emails before and after trip; Clerks, guides and captain were knowledgeable and friendly. Totally professional. We chased one humpback around the bay, at a safe distance; the captain trying to give everyone a great experience. The most-excellent whale museum was half a block from the boat office, and helped round out a totally enjoyable afternoon.Written 3 October 2024
- brianafritz0 contributionsHonest company with a fun experience! The day we went out the waters were very choppy. The company waited until 20 minutes before the tour until they confirmed we were going because they wanted to make sure conditions were safe. Before going, they clearly warned everyone that the sea would be rough! And it was, we did have several people get nauseous. But the guides were constantly checking one everyone. Despite the rough waters, the tour was a blast and we ended up spotting five or six whales! The guide told us whale facts during the ride. We sailed out further into the sea and would sort of keep place until a whale was spotted and then we’d go towards it and watch it breech. We truly appreciated gentle giants for keeping us updated and being truthful about the conditions. They give you clothes that keep you warm and dry as well! I’d recommend gloves if you have them.Written 15 September 2024

Our day started with quite a bit of uncertainty as our first trip was cancelled due to not enough passengers. During shoulder season, I’d recommend fewer tours to not have to cancel last minute due to insufficient passengers as another couple was also cancelled for the same reason while I was standing in the shop. That aside, once we go on a tour it was 10/10! Our first mate, Hepa, was delightfully friendly and warm. Once dressed in our extra gear - full length waterproof suit, life jacket, and water proof jacket, we boarded our boat. Captain Ati (?) was friendly, attentive, and an excellent seaman! The seas were rougher and he navigated them so smoothly. We went to puffin island first and it was great. A thousand puffins on the cliffs, all overhead, and covering the water. Then we went to find the whales - we had three humpbacks, including one that kept breaching over and over, putting on the best show!! Going out in the zodiac is 1,000x better than the big wooden ships! You are fast, nimble, and able to maneuver quickly to the whales. Plus, you are at their level giving ideal viewing and photo ops! We loved the crew and were delighted with the great luck we had for viewing! As a side note, when we came back to harbor a couple was abandoned by their other tour operator who cancelled and did not let them know. Hepa called her friend at the other tour company, made arrangements for their refund, and then got them on a Gentle Giants boat at a discount, which was so lovely and kind.

It was a rainy, dreary day, but we enjoyed the whole experience! We were kept warm and dry with the clothing and boots provided by Gentle Giants. Our guide kept us informed the whole time...what the boat was doing and the behavior of the whale we ended up following. We followed a whale that was not following typical behaviors, but the guide and captain kept us going in the right direction and we had several sightings of the one humpback whale. I would recommend watching the weather and trying your best to find a good weather day. We chatted with people at GeoSpa the night before our whale watching tour and they were able to see so much more that day which had much better weather. We, unfortunately, did not have the flexibility built into our schedule. I was so impressed with our guide who was incredibly kind and reassuring when one passenger got sick on the boat.

From beginning to end the whole trip was flawless. The young lady who was our guide was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. She helped everyone into their gear and rather than just handing stuff out gave little tips on how to make the trip more comfortable.
Although late in the Puffin season we still got to see lots of them. As for whales we were lucky enough to see and follow two, a Minky and Humpback. The guide was good enough to move my young kids round the boat so that they didn't get splashed too much when the boat was travelling around the bay.As the trip stayed in the bay the sea wasn't too choppy even though it was quite windy.
The advantage of being in the rib boats was their speed. As soon as a whale was spotted the boat could race over. The larger more typical sailing boats are much slower so there is the risk by the time these have caught up the whale has dived back down again.
It's better to pay that little bit extra and go in the rib boats as it gives you more chance of seeing the whales up close.
My kids were a little unsure and nervous before going out by the end they loved it.
It would have been nice to see a few more different species though clearly it all dependent on what is out there in the forst place, and at least we got to see some in their natural habitat..

We booked a Whale Safari at the end of April. The boat ride itself was enjoyable; however, we unfortunately did not spot a single whale or sea mammals throughout the tour. Given the lack of sightings, we felt that the experience did not justify the expense. We cannot recommend this tour, especially at the beginning of the so-called whale season. Although we were provided with vouchers for a return trip, it seemed more like a marketing trick than genuine compensation. It's important to note that booking this trip at the start or end of the season significantly reduces the likelihood of encountering any marine life.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are sorry you didn't get the chance to see some whales on your tour. As you know, they are wild animals and we cannot control their whereabout. Even during the full season it is possible to get a tour with no whales as they swim in and out of the bay freely. And of course, as it is a nature controlled phenomenon we never really know when the season will fully start, some years it is early, some years it is later than usual. We do hope you enjoyed going out at sea and got a nice weather on your trip. We will be happy to see you again try your luck on our oak boat with your voucher. All the best, Joséphine.

Staff was very professional as well as considerate. We had reservations for noon on a RIB boat on a foggy cold day and when we arrived we were told that no whales were in the morning and did we want to reschedule or cancel - I really appreciated their honesty.
We went and we ended up seeing a whale surface multiple times - with the RIB boat you’re close to the surface of the water and it was an amazing experience.
The guide was extremely knowledgeable about both the puffins and whales. We were provided with warm, waterproof pants, jackets and boots as well as a life vest. The Gentle Giant RIB boat puffin and whale tour was a highlight of our amazing trip to Iceland - totally worth it.
Plus your ticket gets you a discount in some shops and restaurants in the beautiful town.

I have no problem not seeing a single creature that lived beneath the waves, but I do think these operators abused their confidence in taking us out. We were offered the 21:30 tour; seemed late but we were assured it should still be a good time to go out. As we were staying 75 minutes away in Akireyri, we called twice more to make sure the weather was not too poor to go out; both times we were assured all would be fine. We bundled up in 5-6 layers and they provided heavy overalls and a rain slicker, after which we roared out after a quick safety demo. Within minutes, it became apparent that this might be ill fated. We did see puffins on the ride out, although we had to stay out so far from the island it was impossible to make out much. Then the real misery started; we punched around in the rain and slop of 4-6’ seas for 2 more hours; the only ones more miserable than the 4 of us was the unfortunate young man behind me who upchucked from about 30 in until we touched the dock at 12:01 am. We almost came in 45 min earlier, but even though our tour naturalist had vocally given up, clearly somebody at headquarters was not having us come in completely skunked, at least not early! So they turned us around to try to see minke whales closer to shore; still in whitecaps and driving rain, so we indeed did return completely empty handed and drenched. No hot chocolate or cookies for us; vouchers would not be available until 9 am the next day if we “wished to try again”. I do think this crap weather could have lead to recommendations to not go out; even my crappy Apple Weather predicted this was not the kind of weather anyone should be out in. I really don’t think the tour operators had any illusion we would see anything, and should have offered us something different than this miserable experience

We had an awesome experience, it was clear that the team is passionate about what they do, which made our trip even more enjoyable. Our guide, Sara, was fantastic!! Her knowledge of marine life really added to our adventure.
Having gone whale watching in several places before, this tour in Iceland was truly special. We were lucky enough to see humpback whales, minke whales, and even some dolphins, all set against the stunning Icelandic scenery.
We highly recommend checking out these amazing people for a whale watching experience!!

If I could give this a higher rating I definitely would! We went about a week ago and it did not disappoint. For June it was definitely freezing cold but we lucked out and got perfect weather (the day before it snowed). Seeing the puffins was just an incredible experience (please note they are a bit afraid of the boat so you won't get super close). Then we drove around looking for whales. There was like 15-20 min where I got sad that we wouldn't see any but then out of nowhere 2 humpbacks (a baby and a mom or dad) were spotted. After we saw dolphins and a few more whales. Koen our guide (I honestly forget his name but I remembered he mentioned something about being from the Netherlands) was super kind and informative, he even thanked me after for being so excited about seeing the animals (not sure why others werent freaking out as much because it was just so cool to see whales in nature vs seaworld depressed).
I definitely recommend splurging and getting the rib boat ticker, we flew by every other boat and were able to get to the whales and see so much more than everyone else. Bring gloves, warm socks and shoes & overall just a great attitude. Also bring a good camera (and not your iphone because I can promise your pictures wont be that great if the whale is 30-50 ft away).

Our tour guide, Josephine was wonderful. There were no whales to be seen on this day but we did get to see loads of puffin flying and diving into the ocean.
The seas were incredibly rough and despite all the gear and preparations we were soaked through. It was honesty, miserable.
It is of course not the fault of the tour operators that the weather was brutal or that there were no wales to be seen. However, if you are checking in and they say the seas are rough I would recommend NOT going - because there are no words to describe how bad that experience is.
THE RIB BOAT IS NOT FOR SMALL KIDS. Thankfully we went with older teens but I would not recommend this with younger kids at all.

Dear Basilefamil, thank you very much for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are sorry you had a rough time on the ocean. As you know and mentioned the sea conditions can be challenging in Iceland. We NEVER go out if it is not safe. But yes when we tell you the sea conditions are rough and its going to be very very very cold, wet and difficult, we mean it. Some people are here for this kind of experience and the ultimate decision is always the passengers. We do not allow small kids to go on the RIB on any conditions. Regarding the whales, it is very different from one trip to another, even on good weather day. And as a matter of fact they are sometimes more active at the surface and can jump more often in rough conditions (of course this is a general observation and not a strict rule). I am glad I could help during the trip and you still enjoyed seeing the puffins. Sorry again you didn't enjoyed. Best regards, Joséphine.

This was amazing. We did the RIB safari and had 10 people on the boat - another 6 people could fit. Seeing humpback whales so close was amazing and stopping by the island full of puffins was a nice bonus.
This is one tour that lives up to the advertisement pictures. I would highly recommend this over a traditional big whale watching boat. You get way closer and have no issues seeing the other side of the boat and not crowded with people. We saw 5 different whales and followed them all for a bit. The captain has their timing down and switches the side of the boat they are on so you see them close.

Had an experience on July, 2018 , and was breathtaking, i saw lot of humpbacks and orcas.
I want to return as soon as possible, but i want to know if it's possible to see blue and/or fin whales in these tours and if yes, in which period of the year...

When I asked our guide how often they see whales he said “it’s about 99%”. I think it’s basically a whale playground so odds are high. Hope that helps.

Hi , my family is book for a whale and puffin watching tour from Husavik on Sept 4 2018, but I have read that the Puffin nesting season ends around Aug. 20. Is it unrealistic to expect to see puffins in earlySeptember and if so should we book a lower priced tour that only has whale watching on the agenda?
