What to expect
  • Add a dose of adventure to your Iceland visit during this small-group exploration inside the now-extinct Thrihnukagigur volcano. Outdoor lovers: enjoy this thrilling chance to climb inside a cavern formed thousands of years ago by the powerful forces of mother nature. Begin with pickup from your hotel in Reykjavik. Then take off for a drive to Iceland’s Blue Mountains (Bláfjöll) for your volcano experience, listening to an introduction on how this unique volcanic site was first formed 4,000 years ago from your guide. As it turns out, the unique eruption allowed the formation of its magnificent magmatic chamber. Arrive at Thrihnukagigur, taking note of the safety briefing from your guide. Then head out into the craggy formations of the volcano’s surrounding lava field. Your walk is of moderate difficulty due to the uneven ground and sharp rocky surface, so please be sure to be in good shape and to bring along good hiking shoes. Continue your hike through the field, taking time to admire its volcanic cones and steaming gas fissures, before arriving at the rim of the crater. Listen to another short safety lesson while donning your helmet and harness, then join a group of three or four other guests on the open cable elevator that lowers you into the site. Enjoy the incredible views as you descend, observing the crater’s walls formed many thousands of years ago. Soon, reach the base of this dormant volcano and continue on an exploration of the cavernous interior with your guide. Check out the towering rock dome above, the surface scattered with an array of colors caused by the magma that once touched its surface. You also hear a variety of stories from your guide about the last eruption, imagining this incredible site as it once was, bubbling with liquid magma. After time inside the crater, return back to your vehicle, which drops you at your Reykjavik hotel.

Must Do!!
An amazing experience! The hike to the volcano was magnificent through the lava fields experiencing the weather changes. Inside the volcano was an experience like no other. The colors inside the volcano along with the hike among the boulders was amazing. The guides were first class taking safety seriously. Afterwards enjoyed a delicious soup at base camp. This tour is a must!

Underwhelming experience during a thunderstorm
Jun 2020
A big waste of money. For $600 a ticket, we expected more. The entire experience was very disappointing. Firstly, there was a mighty storm - our tour to the volcano had been cancelled because of the weather, but then they later called us to say it had improved and persuaded us to do the tour, instead of get the refund. The weather was absolutely horrendous - the guide said this was common though and I can well believe it was because it's Iceland and the weather is often bad. I don't mind bad weather usually but hiking in a storm isn't something I signed up for. Our raincoats were soaked when we got to the basecamp - the fleece I was wearing under two coats was wet - that was how bad it was. Anyway the volcano itself wasn't worth the effort or the money. I've visited quite a number of caves in the Balkans, and this wasn't any different, only much smaller. Unless you're a geology nut, its just one of those Instagram social proof experiences - to tell others you were inside a volcano! The interior wasn't impressive, and the paths were very limited, you could not go very far in. If you want to explore the interior of the earth, best go elsewhere.

Thank you Izabellachen for writing your review. It is truly unfortunate that you were not satisfied with your experience of the visit of the Thrihnukagigur volcano which is considered one of the more fascinating locations in Iceland at the moment. A descend into an extinct volcano is something we consider unique and not accessable anywhere else in such a way that has been set up in Iceland. Visiting the website of the volcano will show the extent of the operation, the colors, the enormity of the cavity left untouched by humans until now. Keeping in mind that the Volcano is not a cave but an actual eruption site. The weather can be unpredictable in Iceland and at this location in the mountains but safety is first and foremost our concern, it is regrettable that you felt the tour should be cancelled. I do hope that your visit to Iceland was otherwise pleasant

Not to miss!
Jul 2019
What an introduction to Iceland! The entire experience was top notch! Loved the activity component - a 2 mile hike on uneven surfaces to the crater and then back plus the 600ft. descent and chance to explore the crater floor for 30 minutes. The lunch, Icelandic soup, was delicious! This tour will not disappoint!

Beyond all words!

To be able to go inside a volcano is just unbelievable. With good guides you feel comfortable and save even though you descend with an elevator 120 meters into the crater. The colours inside are unbelievable beautiful and the size is just WOW!
This is something you have to see once in your life.

Failed to read there is a 2 mile hike to get to the volcano, that caught me by surprise. It is absolutely worth it! The experience is amazing! I felt immersed in a geological adventure movie. The inside colors and formations are just beautiful.

Amazing Place, Too Quick a Pace
Sep 2018 • Friends
This is a stunning place that I would highly recommend ... not something you can experience anywhere else in the world. The views inside the volcano were surreal. There was a painting everywhere you looked. The staff were helpful and informative. The major consideration for anyone pondering this tour is the quick pace of the hike. I was walking as fast as I could safely do and stilll falling behind the group. The pace was so quick I found myself stumbling over rocks that jutted out of the trail because I was not able to take care with my footing. My husband almost fell at one point as well. There is no time to look around at the scenery on the way out but you can take more time coming back as the group does not all need to come back together ... especially if you are self-driving. Trail is well marked and no chance of getting lost.

It's just as cool as it looks in the pictures
Jun 2018 • Couples
Guides are very friendly and knowledgeable, and this experience is definitely unique! The color of the magma chamber is pretty much as it appears in the photos you see on TripAdvisor.

I'm not in super great shape, but the walk to the entrance was fine - expect some slopes, and uneven terrain, and to huff and puff a bit if you're like me. ;) It will likely be cold (we went in June, and it was cold then), so dress accordingly - a few people in our group forgot gloves, and their hands were likely pretty frigid by the end of it. If it rains, they will provide you with rain jackets.

Thank you Snoobug for writing your review. The Inside the Volcano tour is certainly one of our most spectacular tours not to be missed. Glad to see that you were able to hike the 40 minutes each way to location, the guides always make sure to walk at a speed that everyone can handle. Dressing in layers and wearing a good jacket is always a good idea even in Summer in Iceland.
