About
Humpback, orca, blue, and minke whales patrol the Reykyavik coast, but you’ll have to leave the shore for the best chance of spotting them. This whale-watching cruise goes deep into the natural habitat of Iceland’s whales and dolphins, getting as close as possible without disturbing the animals. Let a guide direct your attention as you travel across Faxafloi Bay, where a blend of warm and cold ocean currents creates spectacular whale-watching opportunities.

You’ll see views of Mount Esja, Akrafjall, and other landmarks on Faxafloi Bay as you cruise, with trained guides to watch for wildlife and help identify what you see. Some of the most common species are humpback whales, minke whales, harbor porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins, but some lucky visitors may even see blue whales, one of the largest animals on earth. The cruise is designed to reduce environmental impact, pollution, and disruption to the animal habitat, so you know your whale-watching experience won’t harm Iceland’s spectacular coastal ecosystem. Whales or dolphins are spotted on more than 90% of summer tours and 80% of winter tours. Should you not see a whale or dolphin, you’ll receive a complimentary ticket for a second tour. Note: To ensure the best whale-watching opportunity when conditions in Reykjavik are rough (especially in winter), the tour may depart from other harbors, such as Grindavík, Keflavík, Sandgerði, or Hafnarfjörður.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- robertsM1665OU0 contributionsSo professional, well runThe crew was very professional in so many ways. They advised everyone to stay down on the lowest deck where it was warm and they would tell us when it was time to try to see the Northern Lights. They had huge signs reminding everyone not to leave their phone in the (free) snow bib overalls that they provided for guests (I almost forgot mine lol). And finally, they gave out tips on how to photograph the Northern Lights, which I hadn't even thought about! They also played classic pop music from the U.S. So glad I went with this tour company as this was the highlight of my trip and a dream come true seeing the Northern Lights!Written 3 December 2024
- sherihsanders0 contributionsWOW - so much fun!WOW - what a night! We were so lucky and saw the Northern Lights for over an hour. They were spectacular! All of the crew was so nice and helpful. Booking and boarding process was very easy. 10/10 recommend!Written 3 December 2024
- Tricia H0 contributionsWould definitely recommend! My wife and I took our honeymoon in Iceland almost solely to see the lights. We decided to try this tour on our first night in case we didn’t see them (since they let you come back if you don’t). The boat had three levels, with the very top outside. We waited in the warm boat for a while, then decided to wait on deck in case they appeared. No luck. After an hour and a half I figured we would be coming back the next day, but then they announced that the lights were barely visible. We rushed back out, and then the lights fully emerged. We watched for over half an hour. It was absolutely perfect away from the city lights!Written 2 December 2024
- krbsl1230 contributionsGreat tour.We really enjoyed our Nothern Lights Cruise, they were easy to work with to find good night to see the northern lights and we found a night we did see the lights. The crew was very helpful the location in old harbor is very convenient.Written 24 November 2024
- mirah8860 contributionsGreat tripSaw amazing lights! Snowsuits that are provided are amazing very warm able to stay outside for the whole 2 hrs and I’m from Florida! Didn’t feel crowded like it did when I went whale watching with same companyWritten 22 November 2024
- L2187ZNvickim0 contributionsWhale watching as must, but Give the Northern lights a missThe company we used, Edlings we couldn’t fault. The staff were all lovely and knowledgeable. We did whale watching on the morning (9am). Sea was a little choppy, and it was windy, so I would recommend using the overalls they provided when outside. Kept us warm. Obviously, due to whale movement you are not guaranteed to see them, but we saw a humpback and some porpoise. Humpback was right next to the boat. Lovely. We went back at 9pm for the Northern Lights tour. I honestly felt this was a waste of money and would say stay away and spend your money on something else. We went out, put our overalls a on and headed outside. The guide told us we needed a clear sky to see them. It was cloudy, so not sure why they took us. When the boat stopped, the guide then said your eyes need to adjust to the sky for about 20 minutes and you MIGHT be able to see them. Otherwise you might see them through your camera. My partners eyes are perfect, I wear glasses. After a while, my partner said he thought he could see something (I couldn’t) and to point my camera a certain way. There was the tiniest bit of green tinge. Not worth it at all. A few weeks earlier, we walked out of our house in Wigan, and saw red northern lights straight away without our eyes taking time to adjust, and they were much better than what we saw on the boat. Comparison photos attached. We think all the images they post are all enhanced to pull tourists in. Wish we’d spent our money on something else as it want a cheap experience.Written 18 November 2024
- jocJ6354RS0 contributionsPuffin Watch Tour - Wonderful Experience! We really enjoyed our tour and it was wonderful to see all the puffins in their natural habitat on their island. It was a spectacle to see them flying around the boat too! Many thanks to the wonderful crew who were all so kind and helped make the experience so special.Written 12 November 2024
- 122sarahv0 contributionsGood Northern Lights Boat TripWe went on this northern lights boat trip with elding as we had been on one of their whale watching trips. The northern lights were not that strong when we went but we did see them and they were good...nice to see the reflections in the water. The staff were very helpfulWritten 3 November 2024
- Mobile236132086920 contributionsNorthern Lights -Elding is the best way.Everything went very well and we saw the great spectacle with our eyes and cameras ON. Wonderfully managed by the Elding team. The lady on the cruise was very informative and continuously engaged with the people from the start till the end. We had a great time and the weather permitted for the NL to be seen clearly. We booked and it was postponed 2 times and the Elding team fixed it on the right day when it mattered.Written 27 October 2024
- Nimbus10000 contributionsDon’t go with this company to see the northern lights.Very poor. We attempted to go out for the first 2 nights and it was deemed too cloudy. I have no problem with this, it can’t be helped . On the 3rd night it was still pretty cloudy, but we went out anyway. We were told the cruise was on. Unsurprisingly we saw nothing and we were given complimentary tickets. We rebooked using these for the next night. The cruise was cancelled, again due to poor weather. When I asked for my money to be returned I was told we had complimentary tickets, which were valid for 2 years. We could not use them because like the vast majority of people we were in Iceland touring, and our holiday ended the next day. A complete swindle. I approached the ticket desk and said I thought this was unfair. I was told if they gave people their money back who hadn’t seen the lights, and I quote: “we would not have a business”. In essence they get u out there and take your money whether or not you see the lights. This is a con, I am very sad because our time in Iceland was otherwise amazing and the people kind and friendly.Written 23 October 2024

- WT40 contributionsAmazing experienceIronically the night we went out, everyone in our home town in England was posting pictures of the Northern Lights. Fortunately the activity was very strong and unusually red here as well so we got great pictures. It’s very cold and windy on board, overalls can be borrowed, gloves that can be used with a camera would be useful. The staff were great. Had a good time.Written 11 October 2024
- N639LOjamesb0 contributionsREALLY RIBby BrilliantWOW! Turned up 30 minutes before our tour started to get kitted out with an immersion suit, lifevest, gloves etc…and then onto our RIB with our RIB pilot and our guide. A fast and fabulous trip out to the whale watching spots where we first encountered a few pods of dolphins who played with the RIB and gave us all some experiences of photos of a lifetime. At the back half of the trip we came across 2 pairs of humpback whales who were just chilling in the shallow waters, going to the occasional dive and then showering us with whale blow as they came right upto the side of the RIB in all their glory. Just a beyond belief experience…why wouldn’t you do it?Written 10 October 2024
- 969shanitae0 contributionsNorthern LoghtsNice experience. The Northern Lights were out and looked beautiful. There is a bar on the boat for hot chocolate or spirits. Also, the suit for added layer of warmth was amazing. Would definitely recommendWritten 5 October 2024
- AtomicWeazel0 contributionsOnce in a lifetime, incredible experience, highly recommendAn absolutely incredible, once in a lifetime experience. The boat is very comfortable and the staff are incredible, nothing felt like too much on either of the boat trips. They even supplied anti-sickness tablets for my wife, I would highly recommend everyone going to Iceland take part in this.Written 4 October 2024

We loved this trip it was my 30th birthday and we decided to go whale watching. The surroundings were beautiful and the water was very calm and clear, the guide Raoul was very informative and gave us lots of information about the area and the animals and even some old tales which was nice. We were very lucky to see a minke whale which we seen so many times right beside the boat, we also got to see porpoises and they were chasing the waves of the boat it was lovely. We would absolutely recommend the classic whale watching such a nice trip and felt very welcome.

This tour was amazing. The boat has good facilities with a bar, toilets, indoor seating, and lots of outdoor deck space. It didn't feel over crowded. We had lovely weather, but if it is cold and wet there are overalls available for free which you can wear. Emily, the marine biologist, gave great commentary throughout and would constantly tell us where the wildlife is and where we should be looking. We were so blessed with our sightings. We saw 10+ humpback whales, and 3 came right up to the boat! We were also surrounded by dolphins. It didn't feel rushed either, we stayed with the animals for quite a while which was great. The staff said this was the best sightings they've had all year. Obviously sightings are not guaranteed. But what I noticed was the crew were determined for us to see something. They were very "on it" with finding wildlife and knew exactly where to go to get the best chance of sightings. I would recommend using this company as everything was great and there were other ships in the area but we were the first to see a Whale. All the ships are in contact with each other so if one ship sees something they will tell our ship and vice versa. Please note that the tours are sometimes cancelled due to weather; no fault of their own. Just be aware that you might need to be flexible. However, you can keep an eye on their website to see if the tour is on or not, and can book up to 1 hour in advance. The crew also take photos which you can get for free. Overall, a day we'll never forget!

We booked online and had changed from premium to the classic whale watching with no problem at all which was really nice.
We booked online in advance.
Validate your ticket at the desk and then walk down to the boat.
There is a small museum and shop before you get on the boat.
These trips are so dependant on the day but we had it quite good! We saw dolphins and loads of whales. It was lovely to see. The boat has a person commentating and telling you about the animals and where to look! The boat will stop at a good place to see the whales.
They have the upper deck which is where we sat - get on early for a good space. It gets cold out on the water so I would say wear a hat, gloves and jumper! I was cold with 3 layers on and a hat and gloves and it wasn’t raining and it was july!
If it does get too much there is an inside bit downstairs which also has a little shop doing hot drinks!
Toilets are also available and were pretty clean.
There is someone on the boat taking ‘proper’ photos as it was quite difficult to get a good shot with the boat moving! They send you them for free if you email them afterwards.
After 3 hours we had had a super time. I would recommend.

I went whale watching g in February, already aware that this was not peak season. Unfortunately on my trip no whales or dolphins were seen but we did see harbour seals and lots of porpoises. The guide, Megan, was exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced. Local birds were also pointed out as well as some of the more significant landmarks. In all honestly, even though we didn’t see any whales/dolphins the views of the bay were simply stunning. It was definitely worth it. All were offered a refunded ticket lasting two years, which I think is more than fair. The small cafe inside was very reasonable priced and there were waterproofs/keep warms available to borrow. Despite nothing being seen it was well organised, well staffed and I would recommend.

Although we were unlucky enough to not see any whales, we all still had a 'whale of a time'!
The tour was to start from another harbour, due to poor weather conditions (very rough seas). We took advantage of their overalls to keep us all nice and warm so we could stay outside the entire trip.
The views from the boat of the surrounding towns and mountains were incredible. Seeing a whale would simply have been an added bonus. It was wonderful to see Iceland this way!
The tour guide was amazing at delivering information, keeping us entertained and he made it that much more enjoyable!
We have been given free tickets to use on our next trip until we get to see some marine life!
Very professional and friendly company!

Dear HrhFlossie,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with future travellers. We're glad to see you had a wonderful time on board despite the lack of wildlife. Respecting the animals, managing expectations and understanding the unpredictable factor of the tour is key when it comes to venturing out in search for cetacean. We're glad to see you enjoyed the 'little things' and look forward to welcoming you back on a future (complimentary) tour!

The reception to pick up your tickets is located at the Old Harbour, and everyone we spoke with there was really friendly and helpful. On our day, warnings were up saying rough seas so sea sickness tablets were freely available and encouraged. This was a life saver for me as I get extreme sea sickness.
The boat itself is clean and has plenty of seats, but I was out on deck the whole voyage... again there's plenty of space on various different levels.
The guide was extremely informative and really enthusiastic about her subject. Unfortunately due to arctic gales she wasn't always audible but not her fault.
A really good service feature is that if you don't see whales (we didn't, just the back of a solitary porpoise) you can go again and again for up to 2 Years until you see them! Cracking idea which I will not be taking up due to my sickness.
The tour itself is a must do if you go to Iceland.
One last thing... apparently Icelanders hardly ever eat whale meat. It's almost exclusively eaten by tourists wanting to try something "authentic". Please don't buy it. They don't.

We did the Premium Whale Watching Tour on the RIB and it’s probably spoiled us for life . We went on the 8th August and the sea was preternaturally calm. The crew were awesome and cared for our safety ( there always one scurvy passenger that need a gentle reminder ) and they were very friendly and informative. But to be honest we were so lucky from a baby Minke whale that swam around and under us for 20 mins and then a sleepy humpback . But then things changed when a less snoozy Humpback decided to investigate . They came right up to the RIB ( advantage of a small boat) and literally swam up to us within breathing distance ( luckily we had all cleaned our teeth) . A roll and few fin slaps within 5 meters and we were all squealing like kids , I’m unable to upload the close video so have a more distant shot .. Such a joyous experience enhanced by the fact that the Elding team were squealing with us even though they were a marine biologist and professional boatswain . No one can promise what we experienced ( it was also my birthday ) but if it can happen these are the guys that can . Remember avoid restaurants that serve whale or puffin .

We were so pleased that the weather broke and that the trip was going ahead. I had been following the whale diary for about a month prior and the weather had out paid to several trips during January. We set off in clear skies and beautiful sunshine but this soon disappeared however didn’t detract from the trip. The crew were very professional and courteous and Megan who was in the main watchtower was an absolute font of all things flying and swimming. We saw seals , porpoises and dolphins plus lots of birds but alas no bigger creatures which was a shame but that’s the luck of the draw. The excitement is being out on the water in the hope of seeing something at any given moment. Great trip, well organised with knowledgable professional crew. Would do again in a heartbeat

We had a great time on this trip. We’d actually booked for the Sunday and thought we would collect our tickets the day before. However, they said they don’t issue tickets the day before in case the trip is cancelled due to the weather. As the Saturday was such a lovely day, and Sunday would be our last day, we asked if it was possible to change to that day, and it was no problem.
We had an English guide, Rob, who was very knowledgeable, explaining what to look for when trying to find whales and dolphins, the different types found in the area, why those types liked it there, what they ate, how to tell them apart and so on. He was very informative and clear.
The boat was well equipped with toilets, seating inside and out, and a bar area to get hot drinks and snacks (the most reasonable prices too). They can also provide you with a waterproof all in one to keep you warm and dry off your clothing isn’t sufficient.
We were lucky and saw 2 whales popping up and down regularly for a while, and then some dolphins.
A great trip.

We booked this for the start of our trip, and I’m glad we did as the weather was very rough that day and unfortunately didn’t see any whales on this occasion but did spot a couple porpoises and a seal. We were rebooked on another boat trip complimentary which were able to do later in the week with a day of our choice. That morning the water was like a lake it was completely still and we had the most beautiful sunrise, we were lucky enough to spot Frodo the Humpback whale about 5 mins into our trip who was feeding by the harbour! We were able to spend about 2 hours with him, he got extremely close to the boat on multiple occasions and was doing belly rolls and showing off! The guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable and very passionate so it was great to listen to her! We also spotted a pod of porpoises and some inquisitive seals on the trip too. We went out to see if we could spot anything else , which we didn’t but the views were breathtaking and the sea had frozen over in parts and just looked like a postcard! Would recommend this trip hands down , and would also recommend dressing up warm and being prepared if you are going to be outside for the entirety , they have free rain coats, overalls , blankets to borrow and even provide free anti sea sickness tablets. The boat was clean and had some cafe facilities onboard , all in all very impressed!

Can I book this if a member of the group is pregnant?

I think so. The boat is large, slow and fairly stable. There is a lot of seating outside and inside, where there are large windows to look out.
My main concern would be the steps which can be quite steep. Wear 'sensible footwear' and, in my opinion, you may need assistance as you descend.

In the last 16 days Iceland has slaughtered 29 fin whales that were butchered in Reykjavik. I am sure you care for whales but many more will be slaughtered .

How far is the walk to the harbour ticket office from the Hotel Centrum?
Written 7 July 2022
I would say the walk is around 800 metres. If you use Google maps the location of your hotel, and the Elding ticket office are shown if you zoom in. As I said in my review, seriously look closely at the weather before doing this. Enjoy if you do.

Hi,
Our flight arrives at 0600 on October 13th. Do you think it would be possible to do the 0900 tour?
Written 20 June 2022
Technically, yes on paper but I would book for the afternoon and not risk it

I'm not sure if the boat will hold 50 people, you should probably contact the company directly
