What to expect
Due to Iceland’s extreme northern latitude, the sun never fully dips below the horizon during the months of June and July. Take advantage of this magical ‘midnight sun’ with nighttime whale-watching cruise. The adventure begins at the Whale Watching Centre at Reykjavik Old Harbour, where you’ll board a sturdy boat in the evening. Be sure to bundle up, as even summer nights are chilly (warm coveralls are provided if you need them). As you cruise away from the harbor, watch a short, onboard multimedia show for an introduction to Iceland’s marine life. Once out on the open water, claim a spot on the deck to look out for humpback and minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises. Your ship’s friendly crew will assist in spotting and identifying the sea life.  Admire the colorful hues of the night sky as the sun hovers just above the horizon, and enjoy the tranquil sights and sounds of the illuminated sea when the captain cuts the engine. Warm up inside the ship’s Wi-Fi–equipped cabin if you like.  After 2.5 hours on the water, you ship returns to the harbor around 11 pm.

Meditative Bliss in the Midnight Sun
Jul 2019 • Solo
Following a concert at Harpa yesterday, I was walking the shoreline thinking about how incredible it is that my 2-week Iceland adventure is drawing to a close. Aware that I don't want it to be my last, looking out on the sea I realised that my understanding of the land would only deepen by being on her seas. At that moment, I realised I had to get on the water because returning, like every tomorrow, is a promissory note, not a promise I can make and be guaranteed to keep.

So it was I went looking for an experience and found the Midnight Sun whale watching excursion offered by Elding who are considered the pioneers in the Icelandic maritime adventure.

Thankfully the winds died down reducing the chop and sitting on the top deck stern, I felt myself begin to relax for the first time in-- truthfully, I don't know how long, but clearly too long. Once we left the Old Harbor the chattering of languages around me melted into the background, swept away by the wind and the movement of the boat rolling in the swells.

While only one minke whale was spotted, the three hours on the sea was a total success in achieving what I wanted. When the boat turned to port the cold finally sent everyone below for hot drinks and I remained alone, meditating until we docked.

See the National Park. Visit the geysers. Soak in the Blue Lagoon and see all the land-based wonders but give your spirit the gift of time on the ocean.

Booking online is easy and the staff on-site and onboard are pleasant and helpful.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Dress warmly and wear a hat.

Once you check-in at the office, you will be sent down the pier to await your tour departure. It's the ship shown in the picture. Board, but remain outside on the top deck as the diesel fumes below are horrid.

Great staff- disappointing tour
May 2018 • Couples
We loved the staff and the guide. Unfortunately the tour was a little disappointing. The seas were very rough and we did not see any whales. Many people on the top of the boat were falling around the deck and there weren’t a lot of things to hold on to.

Fantastic!
We got to see the nearly extinct North Atlantic Right Whale which made the trip extra special. The boat was very nice, the staff friendly and knowledgable, and the restrooms were clean and roomier than you normally find on tour boats. There even was entertainment on the way back. The picture was taken on the way back
