After pickup in the morning from Reykjavik accommodations, hop aboard your tour SUV to start your trip to Jökulsárlón with the drive toward Iceland's south coast.
Pass through villages of Vik, Selfoss, and Kirkjubaejarklaustur; stop to see Skógafoss, one of the country's best-known waterfalls; and travel by the desert of Skeidararsandur, prone to sand storms. The landscape of this area and the coastline alter frequently as the island's glacial rivers run into the Atlantic, carrying black volcanic sand. As you continue toward the glacial lagoon, pass by Oraefajokull glacier, home to the highest peak in Iceland at 6,952 feet (2,119 meters).
Finally, arrive at Jökulsárlón, where the lagoon is always changing as the large glacier tongue retreats. You'll see icebergs in varying shapes, sizes, and shades of blue, some of which break from the glacier and float on the water. You'll have time to walk around for photo ops and to admire the otherworldly scenery, and you can even take a cruise on an amphibious vehicle for a closer view, if you wish (own expense).
Your day trip ends with return to Reykjavik for hotel drop-off in the evening.
