- Nikki72800 contributionsAbsolutely the first tour you should take when you arrive in Iceland!Had so much fun on our food tour with Dave! It was recommended that we take this tour on arrival day and I was a little hesitant because I figured we would be super jet lagged but super glad we did. We immediately got so much culture, history and most importantly - super yummy food! If you’re a light drinker or some in your group drink and some don’t I highly recommend taking the food tour you can easily add drinks at every stop (most of our group did) then you only pay for what you want to try and where. We loved this tour, Dave was super fun to hang with and loved by all wherever we went and he made sure we left happy and full! He also followed up after with an email full of his recommendations and details on everything we ate and where which helped later when we wanted “that awesome cheese potato fish dish” and needed to look up the name! 😉Written 24 January 2025

She explained a lot to us, gave us fascinating insights into the history and culture of the country, answered all our questions, and shared great local tips. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with her and can highly recommend her. I know that the restaurants are constantly changed by the organizer. Although this wasn’t our first time in Reykjavik, some of the restaurants were new to us. However, there was one we wouldn’t visit again. That being said, it was overall a very nice experience.Written 2 January 2025

Each stop, carefully selected, provides rich history into various delicacies of the Icelandic people. Flavorful fish served sizzling in the pan to rye bread ice cream challenge all your taste buds. Thor, our guide, is a more than a local foodie. His knowledge of his country's history and it's future makes the stroll from each location tremendously interesting. - alano5420 contributionsA fantastic way to start our visitWe had a fabulous tour with Alexandra this evening. Obviously the food is a highlight of such a tour, and we were not disappointed. We certainly left with full bellies and a great Icelandic taste in our mouths. In addition, though, Alexandra was a tremendous master of ceremonies, giving us little tidbits of history and telling us about the food culture in this wonderful country. Her sense of humor, her ability to interact with all of her guests, and her obvious love of her home country made this a tour not to be missed. Thank you, Alexandra.Written 17 December 2024

We came from the USA for a January visit and the day we departed for Reykjavik we decided to hop on this food tour immediately after we arrived. What a great decision!
Firstly, there were some issues paying directly on their website, but after I sent a contact request through their website they sorted it out. Noki and Alex were friendly and helpful over email, and it was solved quickly, and we were set for a 1600 tour for 2.
This tour will go regardless of rain, sleet or snow, so be prepared as you will be walking. Our tour was in total 2.2 km or 1.4 miles, with the walk to the final spot uphill. We were in full winter rain gear and that saved us, be prepared to shed layers inside and put them back on a few times.
Our guide Karítas Sif met the group at the Harpa Concert Hall right on time (we were a little early, and enjoyed the time to chat and do intros with the group of 9 persons total). As soon as everyone arrived we were off to eat! Right from the start, Karítas was friendly and shared stories about Iceland's history.
We visited 5 eateries, all had some local fare with history and cultural significance. Karítas did a great job telling us about each place, the food, and answered any questions we had. She was very fun to be with and we were impressed as she managed the group very well. The transitions from one location to the next were seamless, but it was apparent she had mastered the timing of the tour. We never felt rushed but her timing was so perfect that food would arrive at our tables cooked to perfection, nothing was overcooked and there was very little waiting.
All but one eatery was sit-down, and the restaurants had a section reserved for the group, so no waiting and no conflict with other patrons or other tours. I had originally wondered if this might be a concern, but there were no logistical problems and it was apparent this was a very well planned and managed tour!
We would highly recommend this group tour, it was so enjoyable there was nothing negative about it at all. Overall the variety and quality of food was top-notch, a real taste of Iceland. Must do, no matter the season, go with Wake Up Reykjavik.
Thank you Karítas!

This was a perfect introduction to Iceland!! Our guide, Dagur, was entertaining and easy to interact with as he educated us on Iceland’s traditional and current cuisines.
We really liked the exposure to the different restaurants and the walk through the streets of downtown Reykjavik! Definitely appreciated his explanations on the history behind many of the dishes we tried. Our family enjoyed ALL of the food selections…and even tried the traditional bite of fermented shark with a “chaser” shot of brennivín!
NOTE: The tour price does NOT include the cost of beverages other than water. You would separately settle up the cost of your additional beverages before leaving each restaurant. The guides tell you that in advance, but it’s worth keeping in mind.
Dagur was great at answering any questions our group asked! We even learned a little about Norse mythology and also some Icelandic Christmas folklore about Grýla, the Yule Lads and the Yule Cat!!
Even though it was the third week in August, it was a very chilly afternoon during our walk due to a strong and constant wind. Come prepared with clothes you would normally associate with cold climates and dress in layers!
I definitely recommend Wake Up Reykjavik’s Food Tour and now I know why there are so many 5-star reviews for this tour!! Absolutely worth it!!

Via heyisland.is we booked the Reykjavik Food Walk for a tour starting at 10:30, which was an excellent choice as we covered breakfast and lunch.
The meeting point at the main entrance to Harpa was easy to find and a great choice as not only is the Harpa beautiful, but also enables waiting away from whatever weather happens to be outside. Bergur (or Burger as he simplified for us), our guide, was super friendly and knowledgeable on a range of subjects such as architecture, well beyond food. He clearly loves food and Iceland, and cooks himself also. He was keen to explain Islandic cultures and traditions and happily answered any question anyone asked.
We ended up in a mixed group of nine interesting people and set out on a walk through Reykjavik tasting a large variety of local delicacies such as pancakes, fried fish, fish hash, lamb hot dog, fermented shark, lamb stew and rey bread ice cream while enjoying a walking tour through the city center pickled with information on current and historic Iceland.
We would very much recommend to commence your visit with this tour. It is great for setting the scene and a wonderful introduction.

We were so looking forward to the Reykjavík Food Walk and it did not disappoint! Our guide was Haddy and he definitely made the tour fun and interesting. Haddy grew up in Reykjavík so he has a first hand knowledge of the history and best places to eat. The tour began with appetizers followed by small entree servings, ending with dessert. I highly recommend booking this tour early in your stay so you can get a feel for the city and find those hidden gems you want to come back to.

This tour is worth the hype! I landed in Iceland on a Monday morning and scheduled the 1:30PM tour, which worked out perfectly. I was ready to eat and the food tour did not disappoint. Our guide, "Love," was a true delight for the entire afternoon. She had an infectious energy and her love of Iceland, its cuisine, history and culture were palpable. We made the (5) stops as promised and sampled lamb hot dogs, arctic char and cod, lamb, fermented shark, local beverages (there were even non-alcoholic options for this sober gal), and dessert. My favorite stops were Messinn and Loki, but they were all delicious! The walking between stops was casual and easy, but certainly make sure you are dressed for the weather no matter what time of year you decide to go. I highly recommend this as a first stop for anyone coming to Iceland - I felt like I had a better understanding of local cuisine and what to expect during my stay, got a lovely overview of the city, AND it was a substantial amount of food for quite a deal! The team at Wake Up Reykjavik were also very friendly and helpful via email as I was planning my trip, helping me find a public parking lot nearby our meeting point, and guiding me to the app to pay for parking. Overall, a really enjoyable and pleasant experience from beginning to end!

I was in Reykjavik for 7 days as a solo traveler. It is an interesting city with a vibrant food culture that can be intimidating. I saw the Food Walk and decided it was a great way to sample small bites and get insight into the different places I may wish to experience on my own. Our group (about 12 people) met "Siggy", our guide, at the concert hall. She was on time, organized and possessed a joyful spirit and sense of humor. We went to multiple locations that were always prepared for our groups arrival. Siggy gave us information on what to expect and suggestions based on the offerings available. There was always a vegetarian option available. We sampled grilled fillet of horse (delicious); baked Arctic char with mashed potatoes and caper butter (yummy); fermented shark and a shot of Brennivin (a must experience); the traditional creamed fish stew (hearty and in a beautiful atmosphere); the famous Icelandic hot dog (who knew??) "ein med ollu" with everything (absolutely amazing) and finished at a historic hotel with hot beverage and Happy Marriage cake. Throughout our walk Siggy shared stories, told us about herself and her family and answered any and all crazy questions the group had. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour if you have the time and are interested in experiencing the Reykjavik food scene beyond fish & chips (which are also really good).

The Reykjavik Food Walk on January 30, 2025 was an absolute highlight of our trip! Our guide, Katrín, was incredibly kind, warm-hearted, and attentive while also being highly professional. She not only introduced us to amazing Icelandic food but also taught us a bit about Icelandic culture and shared many helpful tips for our stay. Even though we took the tour towards the end of our trip, we would highly recommend doing it at the beginning—there’s so much valuable insider knowledge that can enhance your experience in Iceland!
The selection of local dishes was fantastic, from the delicious Arctic char at Messinn to the iconic Icelandic hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. And, of course, we couldn’t miss the fermented shark at Íslenski Barinn—let’s just say it was an "interesting" experience 😉.
As rather introverted people, we weren’t sure what to expect from a group tour, but Katrín did an amazing job of making everyone feel comfortable. She struck the perfect balance between engaging storytelling and giving us space to enjoy the experience, so we felt completely at ease the entire time.
The tour was well-organized, the portions were generous, and we loved how it combined amazing food with a fun city walk and local insights. If you're visiting Reykjavik, this is an absolute must-do—come hungry, and you won’t be disappointed!
Thank you, Katrín, for an unforgettable experience! 😊

It was nice to be able to try a little differently. There were five stores, the last one was a dessert store. You could even challenge shark cut into small pieces. The boat called enough (in fact quite a lot). My guide was David and was a talented guide who made the atmosphere comfortable. It allowed me to enjoy Icelandic food more abundantly. After the tour, david shared personal recommendations and information about the stores he visited on the tour. If it was a tour in the early stages of the trip, I would have been able to use more information, but I became difficult for the tour on the last day. If you can speak English, I recommend this tour where you can experience a variety of Icelandic food, including city tours!

If you're visiting Iceland, I would highly recommend booking this food tour either on your day of arrival or second day & would very much recommend Haddy as your guide! We couldn't have asked for a better guide to introduce us to Icelandic cuisine.
Haddy's personality made the tour truly special - he's funny and engaging, striking the perfect balance between being informative and entertaining. His deep knowledge of local food culture really shines through as he takes you to authentic restaurants that you might not discover on your own.
Haddy doesn't just show you great food spots - he goes above and beyond by providing valuable tips and recommendations for the rest of your stay in Iceland. These insider suggestions proved invaluable for the remainder of our trip!

Great tour for anyone who wants to try the local cuisine but doesn’t know where to start, and also a great way to meet new people. Our small group of 7 was led by Karítas, a local, enthusiastic guide with excellent knowledge. She got us all chatting over the food and encouraged us all to try fermented shark! We went to 4 restaurants and a hot dog stand (Icelanic hotdogs are to die for!) All were welcoming and had a table ready for us making the time efficient. Only downer was the awful weather but Karitas made the best of it and it added to the fun! She even emailed us afterwards with a list of the places visited and the food we had so you could go back if you wanted. Highly recommend this tour. (Food is included in the price and water is provided at each stop but if you want beer or other drinks it’s at your own cost)

I cannot eat seafood. Will there be other options at every stop to avoid seafood or is most of the food seafood?
Written 11 March 2024
A lot of the stuff we had wasn't seafood but we had people who had food allergies and they made the guides aware. The guides catered to their allergy needs and they had separate foods at certain locations to meet their restrictions.
Written 11 March 2024
Are there gluten free options at the places you eat at on the tour? My friend has celiac. I don’t want to sign us up for this if she can’t enjoy the food as well :)
Written 21 February 2023
Yes! My girlfriend is gluten intolerant and they made sure to have alternatives available and to inform her what was safe and what wasn't. Make sure you tell them when you book though. She also confirmed with the guide when we checked in.

We will be in Iceland mid December. The only time that works for us for this tour is at 5pm(1700) is this tour still fun even when it is dark out? I really want to do it but I don't want to waste an evening if it isn't worth it in the dark.
Written 12 November 2022
The dark should not be an issue at all-the city will probably be even prettier with all the holiday lights in place. A fantastic tour!!!
Written 12 November 2022
Is there any food on this tour that’s suitable for vegans? I’m aware the Icelandic diet isn’t naturally vegan friendly but would be good to know!
Written 3 August 2022
The guide will ask for diet wishes at the start of the tour and will inform the restaurants. My mom is a vegetarian, and she had different meals. I think you should be fine!!
Written 5 August 2022
Will this trip be able to replace the dinner in Reykjavik (are there only small tastings, or will we be full)?
Written 22 April 2022
I will be visiting next week and just wondering when the best time would be to take the tour? Over lunch or in the evening?
Many Thanks
