About
The Northern Lights (or aurora) are perhaps one of the most popular things that tourists come to Iceland to visit. This stunning light display occurs high in the upper atmosphere of the earth as a result of solarwinds colliding with the magnetic field of our planet. Our Northern Lights team works hard throughout the day, checking on weather data in order to best predict a location where the lights should be clearly visible. The locations visited are different from day to day we head in the direction with the most chances of seeing Northern Lights. As this tour is weather dependent and sightings are not guaranteed you are welcome to join another Northern Lights tour free of charge.

Reykjavik has high level of light pollution, making it difficult for good viewings of the aurora. To overcome this issue we go out into the darker countryside to hunt for the lights. You will be joined by one of our experienced northern lights guide who will have loads of information to share with you. With a little bit of luck you will find an amazing spot to view the Aurora borealis. When you reach the location that your guide has selected as being the best point for a sighting then you will have some time to get out of the bus to see the lights. You will have plenty of time to take some photographs, If you are struggling then your guide should be able to help you setup your camera.

Small Group Northern Lights Tour
Mar 2020
Bustravel Iceland are fantastic - we went on this tour last night and witnessed a fantastic Northern lights show (after rescheduling due to poor weather). We were lucky enough to have Siggi as our tour guide, who went above and beyond to show and tell us about the Northern Lights. His passion for the Northern Lights was infectious and his predictions about when and how they would show were pretty much spot on. Not only did he tell us how to spot the lights, he also showed us how to capture them on our phones/cameras and was kind enough to share his spectacular photographs, which he captured on his DSLR, with us at the end of the tour. Would definitely recommend (wear LOTS of warm layers).

Incredible
Feb 2020
We went on Monday 17th February an although we saw a little something, our driver Siggi, told us that it wasn't great so we were able to go again and again until we saw them.
We monitored the weather and activity for a few days and it didn't look promising until Thursday 20th....clear skies and KP Index of 4!
We rebooked that morning with no problems and went out again that night with Gauti.
You may see other reviews from Feb 20 as it was an awesome view of the lights - we were very lucky.
Both Siggi and Gauti were great and did everything they could to find the best view of the lights...... we were so fortunate that our 2nd visit was the best of the year so far!
Definitely go with the small group tour for a small extra cost (there is also 25% off if you go through their website with promo code LOVE25). A more personal experience and it is a lot easier and faster for this bus to go to more remote, better viewing spots. Siggi and Gauti were able to give full attention to the small group, providing camera tips to capture the lights.
Gauti even took photos of us and emailed them 2 days later - a nice touch
We also did the Golden Circle and South Coast tour with BusTravel Iceland and we can fully recommend them.
Just remember it is not their fault if the lights do not appear!
book as early as you can on your visit so that you have chances to go out again if unsuccessful

Prompt pick up by bus travel . Didn’t think we were going to see the lights as the weather was cloudy ... how wrong we were .
Siggy our guide was exceptional . He found the perfect spot and we saw the most spectacular show . He helped everyone set their cameras and sent us his pictures from the evening too ... incredible . Thankyou so much for a wonderful night .

Opt for the minibus tour and not the cheaper bus tour for an amazing adventure
Feb 2020
Disappointed to be picked up from our bus stop by an extremely large bus (coach) rather than the minibus we'd booked at a premium price. We were 'entertained' by a guide who told ridiculous jokes and silly stories, rather than give information about the forthcoming trip. Fortunately we were dropped off at the BSI bus terminal to transfer to our minibus. From then on the tour improved, to be an amazing experience, with Simon as our guide, who was extremely knowledgeable about the aurora and what we needed to look out for. He drove to a deserted area, away from light pollution, where in a very short time we were extremely fortunate to be treated to a full show of the Northern Lights. During this time Simon gave advice on how best to use camera phones and gave out hot chocolate and blankets. The drop off back to our bus stop was straightforward. All in all an awesome experience which could only be improved by an improved pick up service.

Incredible Northern Lights Tour
We joined the Small Group Northern Lights Tour on 20 Feb 2020. We were on Bus 193. Our driver/guide was fantastic. He was courteous, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful in every way, including helping us with taking photos of the northern lights. He also shared his own photos with us. He took us to the best places to view the lights. As a result, we saw an unbelievable display of the lights. It was an experience we will remember for the rest of our lives. The small group was worthy the extra money because he took us to a place where big buses were not able to go. The extra personal attention was also worth it. We went on two tours with Bustravel Iceland, and we are very impressed with them. We also used two other tour companies, and Bustravel was a notch above in terms of efficiency, quality of tour guides, and customer service. For example, compared with the other companies, we waited for the least amount of time for our pickups. This is important since we were waiting outside in winter weather. The customer support from Claudia was first rate. Also, Bustravel offered a 25% discount, which made their tours much more attractive in terms of price. It was very good value for our money. I highly recommend this company.

Aurora Magic!
Feb 2020 • Couples
This tour was everything we hoped it would be and more. Seeing the Northern Lights has now been ticked off of my bucket list! Our guide Siggi was absolutely fantastic and seemed as excited as we were at the truly spectacular light show that we got to see. His knowledge was excellent and his explanations easy to understand. He took loads of photographs for anyone that wanted them and airdropped them to us all. The hot chocolate was lovely and to finish off a perfect night it snowed! A truly magical evening.

An Amazing Experience!
This trip was fantastic! We chose the small group premium tour as there were only a few people so it was a much more personal experience. Our guide, Siggi, was very knowledgable and gave us loads of information about Iceland generally whilst we were driving for about an hour and a half to get out of the cloud cover. He answered any questions that we had and also gave some great photography tips to capture the aurora effectively. Once at a suitable place with sufficient levels of darkness, we waited for about an hour and a half but eventually did see the aurora. It was well worth the wait in the freezing cold!! Our guide captured some amazing pictures and sent them to us afterwards so that we could keep our own momento. Wrap up in multiple layers if you are doing this trip and also make sure you know what to expect. You don't see the northern lights with your naked eye like a camera does so you won't see the vivid green from the pictures. An amazing light show all the same. Thank you Siggi for a great trip, fantastic photos and much needed blankets and hot chocolates!

Poor tour guide
Poor experience of going on a trip with this company- we were brought 20- 30 min outside of Reykjavik with the light pollution around. We were lucky to see the Northern Lights as the weather was fantastic, but I have zero confidence in the driver looking for the lights in any other location if the weather was bad. I was on a deluxe trip for Northern Lights with another company the night before and the driver was amazing- checking the sky, clouds coverage and sky visibility, and driving us around the National Park to look for clear sky!
The driver from BusTravel has decided to tell us poor stories about ghosts visiting his family in the past, and stories of his grandfather through this trip. Zero connection to the Northern Lights !

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, but we are very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your tour. All our guides hunt for the Northern Lights and go to the best place to view the lights on that night. On the night you are referring to our Driver Guide took you to the best location to see the lights, whilst also considering your comfort by limiting the time you spent in the bus and therefore not viewing the lights. You saw a great display of Northern Lights, which was due to his expertise and knowledge. On our Northern Lights tours we go the extra mile to give you a memorable night! We provide experienced guides and drivers, hot chocolate, traditional Icelandic snacks and a full Icelandic experience. Generally our passengers enjoy hearing stories from our guides about their childhood, culture and history/geography of Iceland. We are sorry you did not enjoy the stories our staff member shared with you.

Fantastic tour

I don’t normally write reviews but thought I’d write one on this tour. They make travelling in Iceland an ease! From pick up and drop off to information about Iceland. First night was unsuccessful for the lights so we went out the next night with great success! I was lucky and had a great tour guide both nights Siggi who goes above and beyond! He has a wealth of information, easy to talk to and will certainly hunt for that special Aurora magic for you. He even ensures you have the right settings in your phone or camera to capture that special moment. I would highly recommend!

Didn't see good lights but tour company seemed decent.
Dec 2019
We didn’t get to see very impressive lights unfortunately but the company seemed good and our guide was good too. Can’t remember our guides first name as he said use his second name as it is easier to pronounce, which was Omar. He was funny, entertaining and very informative about the lights, told everybody how they should have their cameras set-up etc. When we got to the first location he spent time with people setting their cameras up, having previously explained on the bus. We met with another bus also from Bus Travel and their guide Simon was also very funny, engaging, helpful and knowledgeable. Frustrating that the conditions were not in our favour and only saw very faint glimpse of the lights, but Omar did stop at one last location on our way back to Reykjavík to try and see them but no luck but overall I think the company and guides were pretty faultless. We set off around 10pm and returned back to Reykjavík 1.30am.
