The tour was an all-around spectacular way to experience a general overview of some of Icelands best sights and its culture. Jon was a wonderful guide. He was very enthusiastic and we felt his love for his homeland carry over in the tour with his interesting stories and surprise additions to the tour. - SaschaF670 contributionsFabulous experience, especially with the guide KubaOur 4-day trip guided by Troll Expeditions was outstanding mainly, of course, because of the phenomenal nature but also because of our guide for the first 3 days of the trip: Kuba. My wife, daughter, and I found him to be invaluable. He cared profoundly about safety. He focused intensely on all professional obligations (instruction, timing, dining, bathroom breaks--you name it). And he did so with a measured delivery that was a verbal approximation of Prozac. On a personal note, I must add that my wife, who fears ice, was guided expertly by Kuba; he made the most challenging part of the trip into a highlight. I hope this rave review reaches him, and that the company recognizes his importance. The ice cave--newly discovered!--was magnificent, as were most of the locations. We were less enthusiastic about the final all-day experience (with a different guide, who drove so dramatically that my 27-year-old daughter got carsick for the first time in her life). The beach with seals didn't have seals. The 400 steps to the crater ended at a forgettable landscape. But the cliffs at Hellna were indeed sensational, despite the wind that almost blew us into the ocean! I think the 3-day tour would have been enough. That said, we had an unforgettable experience! The vistas will stay with me forever.Written 4 December 2024

And was he ever right! What a display!! Elias was persistent and made sure we had the best chance in the best places - even though we saw a bit of the lights in our first stop, he took us to an even better location. I highly recommend this tour and Elias. The hot chocolate and chocolate bar were a great bonus.Written 4 December 2024

She helped us get in the suits quickly to stay ahead of an upcoming storm, once we were in the water it was amazingly peaceful and just a dream-like, fantastic experience. The cold was fine. Your body stays warm in the suit, just your hands and face get cold, but I hardly noticed it, since I got distracted by the beautiful views. Veronica had great energy and took a bunch of nice pictures that are really nice souvenirs of this great experience. 10 out of 10.Written 4 December 2024

He also talked about the culture and history of Iceland along the way keeping the entire trip cozy and interesting, and informative but not saturated with facts. We always had ample time to visit all the spots, eat, use the restroom and we're well informed in advance before going in about what we're going to experience and the necessary precautions to take to be safe which is super important. We had a good time with our guide Asi. He navigated the jeep through rough terrain on the way over lava fields to the ice cave very well and played great music for our enjoyment.
Once there we quickly attached crampons to our boots, were given helmets and were on our way. After approximately 20 minutes hiking through lava fields (quite a bit of it ice covered) we arrived at the ice cave. While the cave was cool and the guide gave us a lot of interesting facts we were surprised at how small the cave was. The pictures on the website showed a huge cavernous area so we were expecting to walk through a narrow opening and then it would open up significantly to a large area. This was not the case. You literally had to squeeze through some of the tunnel and it never opened to a large area. Only one person at a time could fit into the back area. This was kind of disappointing given what was advertised.
After visiting this area, our guide took us back to the truck and drove us to an area where some older caves were. It seems that this was an extremely large cave that has now collapsed. So we are thinking the pictures were taken in this original area. We get that we are looking at something that is natural and ever evolving but the website should advise that so expectations are set accordingly.
We enjoyed the trek - the scenery was spectacular and our guide was great telling us a lot about Iceland, glaciers and even pointing out movie set locations. Just a little underwhelmed by the specific cave that we visited.

This was one of the most incredible experiences of my life up to this point. It had snowed overnight and we were on the morning tour (would recommend doing it in the morning as the winter days in Iceland are short and this way you don't need to worry about running out of daylight). Efficient pick up in Vik in the Super Jeep - I felt completely safe on the drive to the cave. Trym was an excellent guide explaining what he needed from us with regards to keeping us all safe. Gave us information on the caves and some history. Being inside the ice caves was such a surreal experience - to realise that I was surrounded by ice from a glacier - it just broke my mind.
I loved it so much that I'm already planning to return to Iceland within the next 3 months to go visit a different ice cave as each one is different. Thank you Trym for the amazing experience!

I rented a car from Reykjavik and drove 2.5 hours there and back on the same day for this tour. The drive was easy and fun because of the sunlight! We stopped at Skögafoss waterfall on the way back (11pm, still light).
The weather was rainy that day, but it did not impede our enjoyment. It was worth the trip.
The recent low rated reviews were really misleading. I read them the day of our tour, and I fully expected to arrive at the cave for the guide to say "we can't go in."
The 'Dragon Glass' cave is no longer safe. Disappointing, sure, but there is another, small cave that formed in the glacier you CAN go into.
It's a glacier. They are constantly changing. I don't know how you'd ensure the perfect experience unless you had flexible time on the island and chose a more physically demanding/challenging excursion. I knew my limits being 28 and moderately fit. This was the right tour for me.
The best part was the surrounding landscape. It was absolutely surreal.
The guide was kind and very approachable. A young guy with two kids (bjorn?).
A few notes:
*The walk to the glacier is slightly slippery, but every single person was fine. The tour was made up of young people and older folks alike.
*Don't use your phone while you walk on the glacier. The ground is uneven. There are loose rocks and ice spots.
*Wear appropriate attire. Waterproof hiking boots, raincoat, layers, etc.

So much fun! I had no idea when I booked this that we would actually be putting crampons on, hiking up a glacier and walking over board bridges over rushing glacier rivers to get to the ice cave! Was way more adventurous than I realized and was a total blast. We got wet because there was melting ice water showering down on to one section but it was quick and we dried out so it made it more fun. I would highly recommend wearing all your layers including waterproof or quick-drying pants and a raincoat. We learned a lot of interesting factoids about glaciers, ice caves, volcanos, etc. It was really great. My only comment would be that we were not taken out in a Jeep but a 12 passenger van which was kind of disappointing and not as comfortable because we were in the back. It was about 45 minutes from Vík to the starting point and 35 minutes of it was off roading which was pretty bumpy in the back of the van. It was also hard to hear what the guide was saying in the back. So I guess my only comment would be they shouldn’t advertise it as a Jeep tour if they’re going to put you in a van. Nonetheless, it was a great time and would highly recommend it. The ice cave is absolutely beautiful and our guide told us it would be melted by July!!

I went on this tour with a friend in mid-July and there was no ice cave. We were advised as we got on the super jeep that we wouldn’t be entering a cave due to glacial flooding (which had been known 2 days prior to us arriving for the tour). No refund was offered by the company. I can’t say that it was worth the price at all as all we did was stand on one spot on the glacier for 40min to an hour before getting back into the super jeep and driving to the top of a hill where we once again just stood in the one spot before heading back to Vík. The tour guide himself was lovely but the price of the tour was not worth it for the experience we had.

The ice cave tour was so much fun. Tour picked us up in Vik and started with a 30min drive out to the Kotlüjokull glacier tongue (east of Vik), across barren fields of black sand and takes you right up to the volcanic ash covering the ice at the edges of the glacier. We walked around a bit on the flat ground before donning helmets and spikes on our shoes/boots (not really full crampons) to walk up onto the ashy ice to check out the massive Dragon Glass ice cave (which is collapsing and unsafe to go into anymore) from a distance followed by a smaller ice cave nearby that we climbed up and into.
Part of the fun here is that the glacier is always melting and changing so new caves are opening while others are collapsing so it can be a different experience for everyone or if you come back again months or years later. Our guide even stopped for a second to climb up and dig into a newly forming cave to see if it might eventually become fun / interesting / safe for future tours.
Björn was our guide and he was awesome! Very talkative and gave us lots of tidbits about the glacier, Icelandic culture, the language, the plants and animals, his background, etc. He was knowledgeable, fun, friendly, funny, informative and made everyone feel safe. It’s not a terribly high risk activity because it stays on the ash-covered edges of the ice that are easier to walk on (much less risk than the tours taking you up onto the glacier proper, which we also did and was also amazing), but safety still matters.
Weather is always a dice roll, so just go with it if you end up in a torrential downpour. It’s all part of the Iceland experience. We got lucky and it dried up just in time for our tour after hours of driving rain.
We were also really lucky to have a small group (only 8 people, though tours max out at 14 so they’re never too big)—the two of us (Americans from Boston) and a wonderful American family of 6 from Virginia who were friendly, interested, asked good questions, respectful, social and nice. The folks you end up with on these tours with can really add to the experience, so it’s always a solid bonus when your group is great like these folks were, so the moral of this story is: 1) be awesome for others on your tour and 2) take this tour!

Had a tremendous experience on our glacier hike and ice cave tour. Trym, our guide, picked up that group in Vik in a giant truck that looked like it came of out of the movie “Ice Station Zebra”. He then drove us up to the glacier on a road that he had only cleared of some snow berms the day before. All the while he entertained the group with stories of early Icelandic explorers, the events following following volcano eruptions and finally a tale of how he found the currents ice cave we were visiting after he fell into a crevasse escaping soaked with freezing water. Whether the latter is true or not (and I choose to believe that it is 😉) he’s a great bard for stories of the conditions of Iceland. After donning mini-crampons he then escorted the group up into the glacier to a recently identified ice care where, after telling stories of how to find and use Game of Thrones “dragon glass” (I kept my piece of obsidian), he proceeded to take pictures for the entire group so that we’d have memories to accompany the amazing stories we’ll tell back at home. All the while he ensured that everyone (from young kids, to older visitors to fit hikers could enjoy their pace along the glacier while he “mother-henned” the group. A signature memory for our trip and I plan to do a 2-day glacier hike when I return to Iceland.

We had a great time on the Dragon Glass ice cave tour, and experienced things we never thought we'd get to do! Our guide Sven was hilarious, knowledgeable and personable. We drove out to Katla, put on out helmets and crampons and took an easy hike to the beautiful ice cave. We continued up the glacier to walk on top and got the once in a lifetime experience of sliding down the glacier on our butts (something I was told was very rare to get to do!) The drive in the Jeep was gorgeous, and although we went through rough terrain, the shocks we're good and we didn't get bumped around too much. Have fun- this tour is definitely worth the money!

This was supposed to be a cool and fun experience but for safety reasons, we didn't go inside the cave. I wish the company had informed us instead of lying to us that we were going inside the cave. I appreciate safety concerns but when we are spending so much on an activity, it behooves the company to give us the ability to cancel or re-schedule. I had a Kayaking tour booked and the company called me as soon as they suspected the weather and provided a full refund on cancellation.

The tour itself was an amazing experience, however I would recommend to do this with a different tour operator company. When we arrived at the starting point , the woman guide who was in changed of dispatching groups at check in was very unpleasant and rude , she seamed very annoyed with the amount of people she had to deal with. The tour from beginning to the end was about 3 hours
Once dispatched , there were no super jeep for our group . What a disappointment!! We were looking forward to this experience since this was part of the high light of the tour instead , We spent about 2 hours round trip on a mini van which was not suitable for the bumpy road full of rocks and holes , We were all extremely uncomfortable.
Once we finally arrived on site , our group didn’t get much directions , we were kind of ignored by the woman guide. She was mostly interacting with her own group. Finally after a while, we were directed to our guide Adam who was amazing , caring and very knowledgeable about safety and details on how to walk through the caves which was about a 45 min tour .he saved the day !!
I would definitely recommend the cave tour but experience it with the super jeep would of been amazing !

How long is the walk in the ice cave? How long is the trip in the keep fro Vik to the Ice Cave?
?

You are only in the cave for 15 minutes. They try to keep it uncrowded. The Jeep ride is an hour each way and the hike to and from is about a mile.

I agree with Ryryrobs, I'm in my late 50s but fairly agile. It is scary in places but thoroughly enjoyable. The access/route changes daily due to the weather so some of the bridges and crossing disappear overnight. We all helped each other and the guide was very understanding. The trip in the super jeep is worthwhile even if she feels she doesn't want to venture into the cave.

The walking is very easy. There is a lot of bending down through the cave. It is a narrow opening and very dark. There is a big of climbing and leaping across little streams of water. But I highly recommend

How do most people get from reykjavik to Vik for the dragon glass cave tour?
Written 15 June 2019
It is about a 2 hour 45 minute drive from Reykjavik to Vik. This caught us by surprise, we hadn't done our research before hand. Iceland is a much bigger country than we thought! We ended up renting a car to drive out there and back.
