About
Explore rural Malta, meet the locals and enjoy freshly sourced delicacies during this 'half day'  or 'full day' exclusive tour off the beaten path. A local guide will highlight unique sight-seeing locations with fascinating historical, cultural and ecological importance. You will get to experience village cores and most importantly visit places which are not accessible to the regular tourist... or even locals! The ethos of these eco-tours is to support the local rural community and the Maltese environment, therefore each activity is built around genuine farmers and artisans.

What to expect
  • You will meet the local guide at a location and time of your choice. This is a very exclusive tour for you, and since it's a completely 'private tour' the itinerary may be completely customised to your wishes. Distances in Malta are very short, and if planned well, you will enjoy a number of locations within a short period of time. Among other locations, the main villages visited are Rabat, Mġarr, Siġġiewi and the outskirts of Mellieħa. These are all rural places where agriculture is still predominant. While hopping from one village to the next, buy local products direct from the different farmers, and get a glimpse into their everyday life. All the while, scenic routes are chosen, so that you get to experience the best out of this rural setting. Malta is full of breath-taking view points - from this North-Western region you can also enjoy views of the sister island - Gozo. At one point, you will be hosted on a privately-owned farm (both half and full day options). This visit would be exclusive for you, and here you will savor the fresh products sourced during the day from the farmers network. The light non-cooked lunch, will be similar to a typical farmer's snack, and includes traditional bread, tomato paste, extra virgin olive oil, olives and other condiments, together with local estate wine.  At the end of the experience, the guide will accompany you back to your accommodation or to a pre-established drop-off point.

I went on a private tour with Merill and truly enjoyed the experience. The tour consisted of real authentic Maltese food experience. We visited a couple of bakeries, an olive grove and a natural winery.

I highly recommend this experience.

This was a highlight of our visit to Malta, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to go deeper than the usual tourist attractions. This company is family-and-friends run but extremely professional - so you get a perfectly planned day with all the wonder that comes from reslly learning from the locals and discovering hidden gems in a country that had so many. We visited an olive grove, a bakery, a pastizzi maker - all of them were tiny establishments that were unmarked and that you’d never find on your own. And they go out of their way to ensure all the places they take you to are using traditional methods and local produce / products. It’s truly special!!! We found them through Trip Advisor and we’re SO glad we did!!! Don’t miss this.

We met Chris for a half day private tour and we loved it. First we went to a local bakery and met the bakers and watched (and sampled) fresh bread which he bought for lunch. Onto a sheep farm where they made some of the best fresh cheese called gbeigna and watched how they milked the sheep. Next we went to an olive farm for a tasting and a lunch. It was perfect and Chris was the ultimate guide. I would highly recommend this tour.

Chris and his team have built an incredible, focused tour that takes you to numerous small local producers to see the back story on traditional Maltese ways of doing things. Starting at a small bakery, then visiting a vineyards, a sheep farm and ending with a visit to an olive grove where our group enjoyed a meal of products collected through our tour to that point. Mario and Grace at Cal-Pespus Sheep farm introduced us to their small flock of milk producing sheep then showed us how the make the tasty daily hard cheeses that are air dried in the heat of the sun for local sales. Paul of Cortis Vineyards took us through his vineyard explaining why he has chosen the vines he has and how he focuses on small lots of excellent wines for local consumption. Finally Bella (we missed Charlie) hosted our lunch above her olive groves, providing us olive oil tasting ahead of our tasting of wines, breads and cheeses obtained earlier in the day.

We highly recommend this "off the road' experience, where you meet local producers up front and close, and get the chance to talk to them personally as well as taste their fares.
