About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- sabina04110 contributionsNot a must-seeThis place is not really worth your time, to be honest. It was way too crowded, way too hot. There is a very narrow path to follow around and try and spot butterflies (which can be difficult). But there is no way to hold them, there are scarce information signs too. It’s mostly beautiful vegetation, as if you’re in a jungle. But not a must-see place, especially considering the alternatives.Written 25 August 2024
- yakia0 contributionsNice but smallIt is a nice place Good to visit and the kids enjoyed But it is small and the entrance fee doesn't reflect this………………………….Written 8 July 2024
- kngd0 contributionsNice place to visitWe did not book tkts in advance as we were not sure what day or time we would be here. this was not an issue as even though it was busy we were able to buy tkt's on the spot. it's not very big and i was expecting to see more butterflies... It's nice and not expensive so worth the time if you are in the area.Written 27 April 2024
- justliketetris0 contributionsBeautiful butterfliesA beautiful butterfly house in an old glass house . Pretty much what you would expect from it - lots of butterflies and a little walkway high up to give you a view over the greenery waterfall and pond filled with fish as butterflies fly around you. Nice and relaxing.Written 23 November 2023
- theodorev5980 contributionsNot really worth itVery expensive for 2 species of butterflies in a room. If i knew before, i would avoid visiting. Not really worth it.....Written 9 December 2022
- timj1011010 contributionsPriceyThe Schmetterlinghaus is quite pricey for its small scale and lack of diverse species. Most of the butterflies in the house are monarchs and it was difficult to spot anything else. It is a good experience and a welcome break from the many art galleries in the area.Written 28 October 2022
- Konstantina P0 contributionsVery beautiful but with a small downsideBeautiful ecosystem, we saw many butterflies The only downside is the ticket, which is rather expensive for a very small exhibition. I understand that butterflies need a very specific environment to thrive but still a little bit overpriced.Written 22 October 2022
- tylkopolska0 contributionsnice placefull of surprised in midle of Vienna in this winter christmas season was so cool visting that place full of color and warmWritten 16 September 2020
- Tiberiu_Baranyi0 contributionsButterfly house - in ViennaAs we were strolling in the city center we literally bumped into this - butterfly house in Vienna. There is a 7 euro entrance fee - not the cheapest and you have discount with the Vienna card - still I would say worth it. I don't recall the names of the butterflies that we saw but there were a lot of them - several different- bright and less bright colored - hanging on flowers or flying around - so very interesting for me. Once inside - it is fairly small - but for me it was enough - we spent like 30 minutes there just watching butterflies - sort of relaxing. Remember the rules says don't touch anything- so just try to respect that- but on the other hand don't get surprised if some butterfly will use you as a support - so they just land on you. Inside is very humid - so if you have issues I don't recommend getting in it can be difficult to breath. There is a small gift shop outside - so it you want a memory you can get it there. Overall a nice experience - I would say you try it if you are in the area.Written 4 January 2020
- k_rolyl20170 contributionsSmall Butterfly HouseSmall butterfly house in downtown close to Albertina. Not the “butterflyhouse of my life”, quite small place though was not too busy as we visited close to closing hour. A bit overpriced (well, compared to eg. museum tickets), 7 eur in ‘19, we spent not more than 20 mins inside.Written 7 September 2019
- ANGELO V0 contributionsButterfly HouseThe Schmetterlinghaus (butterfly house) is hosted in a greenhouse close to Hofburg palace. Inside the greenhouse they have created a tropical forest and hundreds of butterflies fly around. It's an interesting experience that is worthwile if you have already in the area, and you have 20 minutes to spare. There are butterflies of different kinds, and they both perch on trees, flowers, plates with fruit - everythig is coated in honey for their food. They also often rest on people hands, although none liked my hands :-) Due to the fact that a tropical rainforest is recreated here, it's extremely humid and hot, just bearable for a short time.Written 26 August 2019
- 2FlyingCoconuts0 contributionsAn Oasis Midst in ViennaVienna is a very busy city with seemingly uncountable possibilities for things to do. The Butterfly House offers a respite for tranquillity from the hustle and bustle. Hundreds of delicate butterflies flutter in the house. One landed on me, then continued on its flight. Photo ops abound. Take a careful look at the waterfalls, trees and plants. What appears to be a gray butterfly suddenly bursts into color! A visit here is relaxing. You can wander along the paths in this very unique spot.Written 6 August 2019
- canalor0 contributionsTo be avoidedThe ambient is very small with few butterflies. The visit won't last more than 10 minutes. The price is exagerated.Written 15 July 2019
- P410ZOdennish0 contributionsShort visitVery very small, do not expect a visit more then 10 minutes. Because of the size also very crowded here.Written 13 May 2019
- BagmanNZ0 contributionsBusySo this was very busy. And to be honest there probably less butterfly’s than we expected. The ones we did see were stunning but there could have been more. On top of that it’s a butterfly house, hence, hot. Really hot. And busy.Written 11 May 2019

We came during the summer and the heat was pretty awful, especially because the greenhouse makes it even more humid. The price was also pretty high (9€) considering it's not that big and can be visited in 15-20 minutes.
However if you love butterflies and nature this visit is a must, as you will be able to see the butterflies up close and they will fly all around you, just a magical experience!
I recommend coming in colder months as you will not find the temperature too unbearable, and there will probably be fewer people, allowing you to sit on one of the few benches and enjoy the atmosphere 🦋💐✨

The Butterfly House is located in a very similar architectural building to the Palmenhaus in Schönbrunn.
It is not so huge to visit as part of is a restaurant.
At the first sight butterflies are not visible but after a while you can see they are everywhere. Most of them are black but there are some coloured.
I have never been before and it was a lovely surprise.
Inside it is humid even in winter and I suggest to take the jacket off and leave it at the wardrobe.

This place is gorgeous. I spent about an hour here, looking at all the gorgeous butterflies, most of which were quite friendly. There were a lot of butterflies of different breeds, sizes, and colors. Some camouflage really well, so keep an eye out for them. The price is not bad if you spend a decent amount of time there, especially if you are a student or have any of the other discounts. I imagine it is great for family or friend outings, dates, photography practice, and more.

The greenhouse is located in the center of the city, the entrance and shops are chaotic and tiny. The flora is well cared for but as for the butterflies you have the opportunity to see some flying around, but for the most part they are dying on the windows. mine should only be done if you really have nothing left to see in Vienna.

Very nice place however no control at all, too many people inside and nobody is checking what the visitors are doing…. Young children touching, killing the butterflies and parents do not care do not address teach, let them know that nobody can touch the butterflies! Sad to see the beautiful dying creatures.

Ok outer structure and nice inside setting, but the Ticket lady was extremely unpleasant and ruined the whole experience. We were there on Christmas morning and although the place was not too crowded, she was extremely rude and unpolite, unable to deal with paying customer. World not recomend

The lady who was working there that day has worked for us for 28 years. If you enjoyed the experience,as you said you did, perhaps we should concentrate the good experience and the fact that you visited one of the most beautiful Jugendstil palmhouses in Europe.Try and concentrate on the good things in life and you might enjoy everything much more. We are happy that you enjoyed the actual experience.

It was quite full, only one cash register for the shop and entrance tickets. From the outside, the building looks much bigger than it actually is. The entrance fees are quite high, I spent about 30 minutes there and saw everything. Otherwise, I can confirm what the previous speaker said.

Unfortunately, we cannot give a better rating. The prices are unreasonable. There are butterflies with damaged wings everywhere, which is probably due to the many visitors who feel the need to touch the animals. Since there is no one there to check, it is unlikely to get any better. To attract the animals, there are cheap plastic containers with fruit that are right next to the paths, so that the animals are also at risk there. Overall, unfortunately, not recommended.

I disagree with all the negative reviews, which invariably lack context.
This is part of an iron and glass former Palm House adjunct to Hofburg. It costs a fortune to maintain these types of structures. €9 is too much for you? Not to its many visitors.
People have short attention spans. There are 200+ butterflies in this small space. I just went, and they were landing on many people, including me. Don’t expect to be inundated with butterflies like in some Disney movie. Be patient and still.
The worst part is adult men plucking butterflies off feeding stations and planting them on their girlfriends. Gross. I’m sure kids touch them too. People don’t know how to behave. Get over it.
Loved it.

Ok, this one was really amazing. It is a smaller tour, but it's worth every cent. From start to finish you are good ng to be surrounded by 🦋🦋 butterflies. They fly freely around you, so there will also be plenty of photo opportunities
