About
The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks around the fire inside a warm candlelit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where lunch, bidos, cooked over the open fire will be served (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions). After lunch you will be invited into a lavvu (Sami tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

What to expect
  • Meet your tour group and Sami guides at a centrally located meeting place to start your adventure. Be sure to dress in warm clothing, including gloves and a hat. Board a comfortable vehicle for the 25-minute trip to the Sami camp.  Upon arrival at the camp, get a chance to feed the herd of over 200 reindeer. This herd is the source of their livelihood, a tradition for the Sami people, who are historically nomadic. Try out some lasso throwing on a practice target, gaining an appreciation of how the Sami manage their herd. After the feeding, make your way inside the lavuu, or traditional tent, to warm up. Listen to stories and facts about the people's culture, traditions and history. Enjoy a lunch of bidos, a type of soup, and cake with coffee. Hear a performance of a joik, a song in the native Sami style.  Board your vehicle for the 25-minute return trip back to the departure point in Tromsø city center.

Absolute gem of an activity. The ground was a bit icy, so our guide lent us spikes for our shoes, which made it much easier and less terrifying to walk around.

Feeding the reindeer was a lot of fun. The folks working with the reindeer are excited to talk about them, so you learn a lot as you go. Everyone is pretty relaxed about the feeding, so we got to mingle with most of the reindeer. Some were more friendly than others, but really they all just wanted to eat constantly. Who can't relate with that?

You get nudged and pushed by antlers a bit, but no fear, it's a language of love. The reindeer don't really want to attack, they just want you to turn around and feed them too.

After the feeding, our Sami guide shared some stories and interesting things about his culture. He was also very informative and welcoming, and I remember practicing my lasso skills afterwards. Really cool stuff.

All in all, it was a lot of fun. The trip was well organized but relaxed enough to give you a bit of freedom walking around the area. Would definitely recommend, even in not-so-good weather!

Had a great experience feeding the reindeers eating reindeer stew and learning about the Sami culture.

My only critique was that it wasn't very covid safe on the bus and in the hut. The bus was full and masks were not enforced so very few people were wearing them. Also we were in the hut and everyone was yolking at the top of their lungs.

A great day out learning about reindeer and the Northern Sami people. Easy pickup from Tromso with a great informative guide, lots of time to feed the reindeer (they’re very friendly) then time for lunch (very tasty) and a chance to listen and join in some traditional songs. Highly recommended!

Excellent day out, lots of time with the cute reindeer which isn’t limited, then a nice lunch with veggie option in a traditional tent and a 20-30min Sami culture learning experience. Staff super friendly and 100% recommend and would come back again!

This was such an amazing experience! The reindeer were beyond adorable and our hosts were incredible- we had so much fun! It was so interesting to learn about their culture too- one of the best things I’ve done since arriving in Tromsø! The lunch is amazing too- I’m gluten and dairy intolerant, there were gluten free cookies, hot drinks and delicious vegetarian soup available which just made the whole experience even better! Would definitely recommend coming here if you’re in Norway:)
