    First time visitor to Durham
This was my first visit to Durham so I was keen to see all the city had to offer. Peter was a great guide, very knowledgeable and his love for his city shone throughout. He showed me many hidden gems that I would otherwise have missed had I opted to wander aimlessly around on my own. The tour was great value for money and of course the historic pub stops were a bonus. I would recommend Peters’ tour without hesitation to anyone with an interest of this fine City.

A very enjoyable couple of hours.
The host was informal and informative and very easy to speak with. Learned lots about Durham and its landmarks which enhanced our 3 day stay. I'm a real ale fan so tried 4 great brews in 4 great traditional pubs. Thanks

    Pub Tour- well worth it
Peter was fantastic. He knew the history of the area and was engaging as he explained the times gone by of the area. My wife and I can highly recommend this tour. Besides the excellent beer, we learned a lot about the history and stories from that area.

    Great tour, would highly recommend
We had the beer / pub tour last Friday and had an awesome time. Peter is a great guy to have a few beers with. He showed us around all the main attractions and some great pubs. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of Durham and shared some great stories / info. The pubs were all fantastic historic pubs, keeping great cask ales. Would highly recommend this tour, thanks again Peter for a great evening!

    Friendly knowledgeable guide
Excellent tour with Peter. Really brought the city and its history to life. Have used guided tours abroad but this was the first time we did it in the UK and it was certainly worthwhile. Would not have got as much out of our trip without the tour. Would highly recommend.

    Excellent Pub and History Tour
The pub and history tour was absolutely fantastic. We met up with Peter at 5pm and he took us around the historical sites in Durham including the Cathedral and Castle and to 4 historic local pubs which were fabulous as they were real local pubs with open fires - just lovely. Peter was really professional and knowledgeable about Durham he had done extensive historical research so gave us lots of stories about the history of Durham and it was so interesting to see the city of a night with all the lamps and main sites lit up. The tour was a totally different take on seeing the city in daylight and was very educational and enjoyable. The tour lasted nearly 3 hours and we cannot praise and thank Peter enough for really making this the best walking tour we have done and we have done lots all over the world ! Peter is very pleasant and amiable person so we really enjoyed spending time with him. If you are visiting Durham do not hesitate to book this tour you will not be disappointed.

Great way to see Durham for tourists and locals
Amazing tour! Peter certainly had a deep knowledge of local history as well as lots of stories to tell and he chose great historical pubs. This is a great walking tour if you want to get to know Durham and would like to get some local beer recommendations too! The walk is not hard and it’s good conversation in the pubs! Would 100% recommend!

    Enjoyable and Informative
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was a friendly, welcoming experience for a new resident with previously only general background and landmark knowledge of the city. Some brisk walking and the pub stops served to warm us up on a cold night! Peter had certainly done his homework in terms of planning the route so that everything along the way was of interest. He was more than well informed on the general history and culture of Durham as well as giving specific information about locations and buildings - not least the chosen pubs and what they offer. I recommend it!

    Amazing Experience!
We had a great tour with Peter and learned so much more about Durham than we’d thought was possible. We stopped at four great pubs along the way, and each was a true locals pub that helped us to better understand the city. We’ve done many walking tours in various cities, but this one was one of the best. At about a mile it’s not too much walking, and Peter shared stories we hadn’t read in our guidebooks. Absolutely recommend this tour to anybody visiting Durham!

    I.5 hour walking tour
We took a day trip to Durham from York and were delighted to have spent 1.5 hours in Peter's company as he filled us in on Durham's past and indeed present. Peter was knowledgeable, very informative and had an relaxed, easy presentation style. The 1.5hrs flew despite the rain.

Very good, interesting educational and fun walk, I would definitely recommend this tour.
I really enjoyed learning about the darker side, which was quite an eyeopener to me and learning why the city was built where it is.

I'll never forget the bells and the sun on the river and cathedral
I was lucky enough to choose a quite day so had a solo tour with Peter. His enthusiasm is wonderful as was my 1 and half hour tour. Lots of historical info and some funny tales. The views were beautiful, such a lovely walk. I'm 70 and the walk was fine for me. I really feel like I learnt a lot. I emailed several companies for a short walk and Peter's response was quickest with choices of walks and times, he was by far the best responder. His online system is easy to use. He was prompt at the meeting place and very well organised. As it was Sunday afternoon my walk was accompanied by bells ringing from the cathedral, I'd like to think it was arranged especially for my tour.

Peter’s walk around Durham on 23 May was everything we could have wished for.

The stopping off points, information and anecdotes that he had to share with us about the history and importance of the power house of Durham, its university, cathedral and culture was so well delivered as well as entertaining.

We could never have gleaned even half of the information wandering by ourselves. So many things we’d have walked by without knowing the significance had we not been guided by Peter.

This is a man who knows what he’s talking about, who is genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his subject.

It was a particularly cold and rainy day but he still managed to make it so compelling and interesting.

Can’t recommend WalkaboutDurham highly enough. You will not be disappointed.

Best wishes

Peter's tour provided our group from Hertfordshire with an excellent introduction to the city, outlining its history and development with clarity and humour, and included a lovely stretch of the river bank with views of the cathedral and other ancient buildings. He has particular insights into the University complex as well. We were amused to discove that our "local" Royal, the late Queen Mother, had ancestral links to the coalmining industry!

My first trip to Durham and this is the perfect introduction to this beautiful and fascinating city. It's a good gentle walk - Durham is hilly but the pace was easily manageable and there frequent stops for views, stories and historical education. My daughter has been studying in Durham for the last three years and also learnt a lot from the tour so this is for all ages and experiences. Peter is a terrific guide, and I would thoroughly recommend this walking tour to anyone visiting or even living in the city!

We met our guide Peter in the market square 10 minutes early and were then joined by 3 lovely ladies who had travelled down from Edinburgh for the day, making a total party 5. The first of several stops was the market corner with Peter finding a shaded area every time we stopped to tell about the history of the area we were in.
We walked along the river which was lovely and then crossed another bridge to make our way to the Cathedral.
Peter and the rest of our party chatted constantly about the history of Durham and you could tell he knew and loved Durham.
We would highly recommend this walk.
Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our history tour with Peter. The tour took us to beautiful places we’d never have discovered without the tour. We learned about the history of the city and surrounding area. All put across in an easy manner. He also advised on where to eat out.
I’d recommend this tour to everyone visiting Durham as it’s a lovely relaxing way to appreciate the sights in Peter’s company. Made our trip to Durham.

An excellent, relaxed, informative introduction to Durham. Our guide Peter was a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, affable chap with an obvious love for the town. Starting at the market place finishing at the Cathedral it was a 90 + minutes educational and fun guide at a relaxed pace. The man even recommended places to eat, pubs to drink in and, even, lent me his umbrella leaving himself open to the elements. As the kids say Legend.

Peter arrived punctually and was very friendly and informative and easy to get on with and gave us a great informative tour explaining all about the amazing history of Durham and its querks and points of interest. He showed us all of the sights and gave us an insight into the long history of Durham around the tour and descriptions on what we were looking at. He was brilliant with his tour and answered all the questions we asked him. I would certainly recommend Peter as he was certainly worth his weight in gold :o)

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking guided tour with Peter. He was a very knowledgeable tour guide and the historical facts were well presented in an interesting and humorous way. The tour took us round areas of Durham we might not have discovered otherwise and was the perfect length (1.5 hours) to learn about the history behind Durham but not be overloaded with facts.
We would thoroughly recommend Peter’s tour.
