About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Melissa M0 contributionsAbsolutely Amazing excursion!!!They were very friendly and informative before and during the excursion!! We were super happy with our catch, they definitely know what they are doing as far as boating in the open ocean and catching fish!!! I would absolutely rebook with them if we ever make it back to Moorea!!Written 27 November 2024
- andrewj70 contributionsGreat deep sea fishing trip for familyWe made a booking fairly last minute for my son how’s an avid fisherman. We ended up getting a yellowfin tuna. We had them fillet it and then the restaurant at the hotel made a sashimi appetizer and cooked an entree. We had to much we fed 8 other tables. Everyone raved about it. The guys on the boat were very insightful, helpful and full of local knowledge. We saw plenty of tiger fish including Marlin but didn’t manage to catch thoseWritten 24 November 2024
- meagenh20140 contributionsNot as DescribedAfter reading reviews, I can say our private half day experience was even more disappointing. We booked the tour for our family of 6, and reading the description we were so excited! They picked us up at our air bnb which was very nice of them. After a very brief introduction, we were told we were going to chase the birds to find the fish. We trolled for an hour which was fine, caught a couple of fish with the teens helping reel them in. Once a fish was in, not any kind of congratulation or photo with the fish was offered, they just started trolling again. By an hour and a half in, the kids are sea sick and we ask to fish the lagoon. They told us they didn't bring that equipment and all they could do is take us to coco beach. We said yes please, as the kids were getting sick off the sides by this time. They dropped us at coco beach and left 2 hours into our time, leaving us to try and beg the coco beach ferry to please drop us back at our house. We ended up wading/ swimming back to the house a ways. By far, the best part of the excursion was the lunch at coco beach.Written 17 June 2024
- Tour5553370 contributionsTop Notch Crew!Had a fantastic outing with Ateni. This is a well seasoned crew that will certainly put you on the fish. I would highly recommend booking a charter with Ateni, we will undoubtedly fish with him again the next time we are in Tahiti/Moorea.Written 26 February 2024
- ilona8310 contributionsFun day on the waterOne of the best days of our trip to Moorea! The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Although it was a calm day and the fish weren’t biting, they seemed determined to find us a catch. They took us around to a few different locations, and we ended up catching one fish each- a wahoo and a skipjack tuna! We later learned that they were known by other locals to be excellent fishermen. Definitely recommend!Written 21 November 2023
- taking-fun-seriously0 contributionsAmazing trip; big thanks to Captain Gael!My 10 year old son and I took a 4 hour morning trip out w/ Captain Gael and his mate looking for big game fish. It was a great trip. We caught a nice blue marlin, which was a bucket list experience for me, and my son was euphoric. Gael and his mate were great hosts: very knowledgeable, accommodating and obviously deeply experienced. Once we were back, they cleaned the fish and that night we had it for dinner, which was really fun for our family. Even if we hadn’t landed a fish, I’d still wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. It’s amazing being out on the water away from Moorea and Tahiti, and Gael is the perfect guide. We even spotted some humpbacks from a distance on our way in. I hope we get back to Moorea someday soon, and booking another trip with these guys will be a top priority. Mauruuru!Written 8 August 2023
- sahib2000 contributionsIf you like fishing this is a must do!My wife and I visited Moorea in March and went fishing with Moorea Fishing Adventures. We had an outstanding time and caught three large tuna. We liked our trip much that we went back in July for a two week stay and went out a second time with Moorea Fishing adventures and caught two more large tuna. The captain and crew are very professional and friendly, and we had such a delightful time that we will be returning next year and plan on fishing with them again. Matahi put us on the fish right away. We caught amazing fish including three white tuna. But the highlight was the 54 kilo yellow fin... On a hand line ! I've never had an experience like this it was surly once in a lifetime but I hope not. We were back by lunch too. Much respect to the crew Thank you WilliamWritten 20 March 2023

I've been fishing my whole life and appreciated the trip. My wife hasn't fish much and had a blast (and landed a fish!). - X5240GEjohng0 contributionsFirst fishing trip in MooreaMatahi and Benji were fun, energetic, and welcoming. They offered free pick up and drop off at our resort, and provided water and beer for the trip as well as coconut bread for a snack. We shared our trip with another couple and trolled for 4 hours. The bite was slow unfortunately, but I caught the biggest Mahi I have ever landed and white Tuna was caught. I look forward to fishing again with Benji and Matahi on our next. We only wish we were able to see and play with Matahi's two puppies we met at the dock after the trip lol.Written 25 June 2021
- Escape143111549640 contributionsA great time!We spent a couple of weeks in French Polynesia, and really wanted to get out on a fishing charter. Of course we procrastinated and waited until our last day in Moorea to head out with Matahi and Benji. I’m so glad we took the time though, as the experience was one of the highlights of our trip. We caught a beautiful Mahi, but the fishing was only part of the experience. Chatting it up with the crew was a lot of fun, and we learned so much about the wildlife and culture of Moorea. The guys even showed us a great place to snorkel and see sea turtles. We went back to this spot the next day and had an incredible time with our families. Next time we’re in Moorea, we plan on doing the full day trip. Highly recommended!Written 16 June 2021
- steel_3d0 contributionsBig on the adventure, light on the fish :)Had an awesome day on the boat with Matahi and Benji! We got the family package with my wife and 2.5yr old son. We all had a blast! We went out deep sea fishing first, the dolphins played with our boat on the way out, and we caught a giant 80 kilo striped marlin by accident :D I say that because I actually wasn't so interested in deep sea fishing, I wanted to catch some lagoon fish to eat (which we discussed ahead of time but didn't get around to in the end). But I wasn't complaining, a marlin's nothing to sneeze at! It was quite a fight, and the rod broke halfway through, so it wasn't on easy mode. They didn't have a belt, got some pretty good bruises trying to reel with the broken rod :) It was part of the fun. Then we dropped the fish off and went snorkeling in a pretty cool spot. Then on to a spot to pet stingrays and finish off the day with an amazing lunch on the boat that the guys and their families prepared. It was a 7 hour day well spent. The boat was new and nice, the guys were super fun, we chatted a bunch, like new friends. Listened to local music. Learned a lot about the island and its people. They recorded lots of cool photos and videos and sent them over later. Our son loved all the different experiences, too, even though he was seasick briefly, and I won't be surprised if he remembers that day for the rest of his life. The next day was a bit of a comedown. The guys said we'd get about 5 kilos of fish and a plate of carpaccio. We ended up with two pieces of fish totaling maybe two kilos, and no carpaccio. But one of the pieces was kind of a joke, it was mostly the blood meat they cut out from between the two nice cuts. But after some cleaning we got a nice carpaccio out of it and some steaks. It was tasty. It was gone in two days among the three of us, light meals. So a bit stingy on the fish :P Over-selling and under-delivering is not great. One star off for that. I suggest if you care about the fish you clarify exactly what you get and what you don't before you book. We got all of the adventure, not much of the fish :D But it was an awesome day regardless! I highly recommend it as long as you go in with the right understanding of what you're getting. Some people think fishing means you catch fish and you eat it. But the adventure itself is awesome!Written 21 December 2020
- poindexter160 contributionsBest day in Moorea!Best day of our entire trip! Matahi and Benji were great - personable and professional. They transferred us to and from our AirBnb and took us out for an amazing day on the water. Nice comfortable boat with solid equipment. Couldn't have asked for a better day - - Caught a blue striped Marlin - Hung with some dolphins - Pet a sting ray - Soaked in the astonishing views No reason to go out with anyone else.Written 8 December 2020

These are the guys you want to be on the water with for catching fish. Matahi is amazing and every point from booking the trip online, to pick up at my hotel, to recommendations for Moorea was fantastic.
But of course it’s all about the fishing. And he delivers! We had a gorgeous day to be out. I learned so much from him about traditional fishing methods in Tahiti. Rigging bait to drop from buoys and hand lines. We brought in 4 great size skip jack and had a big wahoo on -but I lost it before we got it in.
I highly recommend them for your fishing adventures. They will not disappoint

Matahi and his crew are wonderful. We had a great half-day, learned Tahitian hand-lining, caught tuna (and later ate sashimi), and spent the rest of our time telling fish stories in French and English. This was a high point of our vacation and it will be for you too. Remerciements!

We visited Moorea for our honeymoon and my husband really wanted to have a deep sea fishing experience. The weather was bad but Matahi the owner assured us it would be ok and fish were biting ‘tight lines he said’.
Sorry to say no fish and the trip cut short due to the poor conditions. Our opinion is that this trip should have never gone ahead, felt like he didn’t want to refund our money. Won’t recommend.

One of the most memorable days we spent on beautiful Moorea. Matahi was truly a pleasure to spend the day with and even prepared one of the best meals we had on our entire trip for lunch. You can't go wrong booking this adventure!

I’m from New Zealand and paid $480 for a four-hour fishing trip with Moorea Fishing Adventures on a 7.5m center console boat. Despite rough weather conditions (25-30 knot winds and a 2.5m swell), I was assured by the skipper that it would be safe and we would target pelagic fish. A 40% refund was offered if I didn’t want to go, but there was no refund policy on the website. Trusting their assurance, I confirmed my spot.
Unfortunately, the advertised skipper was not present, and his mate took charge instead. There was no safety briefing, not even a mention of where the life jackets were, which was quite concerning. We spent half an hour riding out of the lagoon, soaking the front passengers with spray. Once out, we could only travel with the sea due to the conditions. After 2 hours, we arrived at the top of the island. Along the way, we had only two lures out for four paying anglers, one not swimming and the other jumping erratically. We couldn’t fish the buoys due to the rough conditions. After 2 hours, the fishing was over, and we had a 1-hour ride back through the lagoon, cutting the trip short by half an hour.
While I understand that fishing doesn’t always guarantee a catch, professional businesses should assess whether it’s appropriate to depart when conditions are unfavorable. It felt like the trip was more about revenue than providing a quality fishing experience.
After the trip, I expressed my dissatisfaction to Moorea Fishing Adventures. Their dismissive response showed a lack of concern for customer experience. This was disappointing given the time and money invested.
I’ve had better experiences with other fishing charters where safety was a priority and the crew made genuine efforts despite challenging conditions. The stark contrast made this trip frustrating.
For future customers, I recommend doing thorough research as there must be better options available. Moorea Fishing Adventures could improve by:
1. Providing Safety Briefings: Start each trip with a thorough safety briefing, including the location of life jackets and emergency procedures.
2. Clear Communication: Clearly communicate any changes to the trip, including skipper changes and reasons behind them.
3. Assessing Conditions Honestly: Make a genuine assessment of weather conditions and offer full refunds.
4. Improving Customer Service: Be responsive to customer complaints and concerns to enhance the overall experience.
5. Ensuring Advertised Duration: Ensure trips meet or exceed the advertised duration and compensate if they are cut short.

Thank you for review Brian.
I'm sad you had a bad day but the message you sent me the day before could predict your bad review. My deepest thought is you want it to get a full refund even though we confirm the trip that day.
You booked a half day sharing charter with another couple and a teenage on board. Just like you I contact them the day before and they confirm the trip. I would refund you totally if they want to cancel the trip which was not the case.
You are right we had wind that day, just like the day before and 3 days after your trip.
As I told you this wind blows at least from June to September, we call this south wind "Mara'amu" in Tahitian, and it brings the fresh air from the south during our winter.
As I text you, the day before, we live on an island and in this case we are heading to the windward side of the island which is on the another side.
If you remember all the fisherman were fishing at the same spot and went out fishing as well that day.
Let's talk about the other couple on board, off course they were disappointed for not catching a fish but they book another half day trip 3 days after and caught a massive albacore tuna and skipjack tuna. As well as the teenage on board he came back with us and we caught a yellowfin and a huge dogtooth tuna.
I replied to your message after the trip but I just cannot accept your complaint.
To resume you were inform of the conditions. I hope you will get a chance to come back to change this day to a better experience.

We booked a trip with Matahi for my wife and 2 teenage kids we were really excited about. I was in contact with him throughout the booking process and was thinking we were booking a trip to go out with him. When we showed up at the dock to meet Matahi he wasn’t there. He sent 2 of his buddies to take us out.
The seas were a bit rough and fishing wasn’t very good. That’s totally fine. Some days are good and some days aren’t. I understand that from being on both sides of guided trips in my life. We caught 2 small skipjacks which is better than some trips I have been on.
The difference in this trip is you always treat your own clients better than someone else will. We were picked up at 7:30 am by 2 guys that were not Matahi. Started fishing about 8. Trolled for 2 hours attempting to catch fish. Then pointed the boat towards the lagoon at 10 am and went way faster than our previous trolling speed all the way there. We kept the lines in the water but the guides had really no interest in even trying anymore at that point. We pulled into the lagoon at 10:45, reeled the lines in, and we took a 40 minute boat ride back to the dock, trip over at 11:20.
I’m not saying Matahi would have caught more fish than these guys or that these guys can’t fish. I’m saying Matahi would have most likely treated us more like clients and acted like he was trying even when the fish aren’t cooperating. That happens.
I understand days aren’t always good, but you have to make people feel like they are getting there moneys worth. I would not book here again for that reason. Just maybe ask the question who’s your guide before you pay that kind of money to fish.

Thank you for your review and I apologize for this misconvenience.
Unfortunately the sea was rough that day so the crew decide to go fishing in calmer seas.
Unfortunately the wind peak and wrap around the island and did not have find any calmer seas.
The crew decide to head back in the lagoon from the closest pass from your location and this one was located on the North coast.
It takes a long time to bring you back to the dock you parked your car.
The crew on board have been working on the fishing charter for 3 years and have caught bigger fish than Me with this boat. They are experienced fishermen.
I hope you get a chance to comeback so we can go out together and spend a better day.

I booked the private full day fishing trip for myself, my husband and my brother. Captain Matahi and his brother were very experienced at running the boat and fishing. Once we got on the boat Matahi offered us coconut bread steamed in banana leaves for breakfast which was the best we had on the island. Matahi was very friendly and took the time to show us and explain each method of fishing we tried. We are avid Florida fishers but the methods there are totally different. Hand-lining in big tuna was an amazing experience. He also showed us a method of deep dropping using boueys. We caught a dozen skipjack, yellowfin and albacore. Matahi was great and explained all of the Tahitian words for the fish and birds and the local fishing methods. We were served delicious cooked and raw tuna for lunch on the boat then headed back to shore. Matahi offered us plenty of fish to take back to our villa and cook dinner for 12 plus leftovers. We did several tours while on the island but this was definitely our favorite. We can’t wait to plan a trip back to fish with Matahi again!

The Fishing Day was, without question, the highlight of our trip. We spent a week on the island, and my kids just wanted to try fishing.
We were concerned about getting out onto the ocean, safety, and the ability to catch fish. But, we felt safe and comfortable out on the water with Matahi and Benji. It was like hanging out with family. We laughed, had a fantastic time, and learned much about the ocean, fishing, and even his grandfather's techniques. It was spectacular even without catching any fish.
While looking for the schools of fish, it was cool to learn about the island, the culture, and even Matahi's and Benji's families. My kids were so comfortable talking to them about fishing and the island and all the different fish species. Watching them interact and how easily they interacted with Captain was pretty cool.
We were contemplating telling the Captain that we didn't want to stop and see the Rays or sharks. MAKE SURE AND GO if you have the chance. We didn't go to the touristy strip of sand with a hundred other people. We went to a place where there was no one there. I don't know if it is always like that, but the experience was insanely cool. We had a great lunch of fish and local favorites. Loved it!
Oh yeah, we all caught fish... We used traditional ways of catching with poles, but the finest was when Matahi and Benji showed how their grandfathers used to catch fish. It was so fun to watch, and my kids all went to try. What a fun time they had fishing.
To summarize, this was a trip of a lifetime. We spent a lot of money on this trip, and this fishing day was the one that sealed the deal on this whole experience. A once a lifetime chance for us. Every part was worth it.
If we had never caught a fish, it was worth the price. We plan on going back, and this will be the one adventure we will redo. DON'T MISS THIS! Make it a priority.

When I say the day out with Mat and Benji was the best part of our honeymoon, I mean it! You will not find a better, more knowledgeable, or fun charter group!
They both have extreme knowledge of the ocean that they fish which puts you in the best position to be able to hook up with amazing fish. AND they’ll take you to a nice lagoon for a meal and rays/sharks!
I would HIGHLY recommend booking the full day trip - I promise you will not regret it!
And remember - it’s fishing, not catching 😉

Hello, I have a group of 1. Is there a way I can get in on a charter on Sep 5 or 6?
Thanks.
