      What a way to celebrate....
My husband has had "swimming with manta rays" on his bucket list for years and we had booked a Marine Wildlife Cruise back in 2020, but it was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid. So... as it was our 30th wedding anniversary on 2nd December we decided to book a similar trip again, but with some added luxury and chill out time added. We did a bit of research and came across Secret Paradise Maldives, and Ruth Franklin. Having booked the only available spaces left for the Marine Cruise in mid December, we enquired about places to stay prior to this. Ruth was really helpful, giving us a wide selection of options in different islands, with a resume of each one to help us choose. We emailed and spoke a few times to discuss options and transfers etc. Be warned, there are so many islands covering a massive area, miles apart. We finally decided on two resort islands in Baa Atoll. We spent our first week and our wedding anniversary on Coco Palm, then moved to Reethi Beach for week two and then the Marine Wildlife Cruise for week three which visited a number of the southern atolls. Our stay at Coco Palm was amazing. We stayed in a lagoon villa. The villa was beautiful with a small deck with plunge pool and loungers, all above the crystal clear water. There was a small area of new coral just near the villa and this attracted lots of fish, the biggest of which was a Tawny reef shark, which was a bit scary even though we knew they weren't dangerous. The food was amazing, all fresh, lots of choice and the staff were lovely and friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The house reef was good. Week 2 at Reethi Beach was not quite so luxurious but also not so expensive. We had a sunset villa overlooking the beach and sea. The house reef was fabulous, in shallow water and just off the beach. We saw amazing marine life here including shark, dolphins, turtles, stingrays, clownfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, sweetlips and a multitude of other brightly coloured fish. The food was great, again with fresh ingredients but not quite so much choice as Coco Palm. Week 3 - The marine wildlife cruise. Here we lived on-board a Turkish Gulet and cruised around the southern atolls looking for Whale Sharks. It was a small group tour and there were 10 of us in total. Luckily we all got on fine as there wasnt really anywhere you could get away from people if you wanted too. We anchored in various spots and took a smaller Dhoni to areas where mega-fauna might be. We had Kemi as our tour leader and Chloe from the Maldives Whale Shark Project on board along with a small number of crew. Kemi and Chloe knew their stuff and the crew were amazing and very helpful. We all ate together and I was amazed at the fresh and varied menu the chef and staff produced in the kitchen. Each day involved a couple of reef snorkelling sessions (some before breakfast!!!). We saw dolphins, turtles, various species of shark, Moray eels, cuttlefish, trumpet fish and large shoals of smaller fish. We also got to see / swim with manta rays. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the illusive whale shark. We visited a couple of the local islands and had a beach barbeque. The Maldivian Evening on board was definitely a night to remember with traditional Maldivian food, music and dancing, with a finale performed by the legendary Ibrahim, the Dhoni pilot. Im not giving any more details on this but lets just say it was a very unexpected end to the evening! Its worth a mention about inter island travel. International flights all come into Velana international airport (MLE) also known as Male international airport. The resort islands are either served by ferry, speedboat or seaplane, depending on how far away from Male they are. If you decide to spend time at different atolls it is likely you will have to travel back to Male to transfer to the other atoll. Because both of our resorts were in Baa Atoll, We travelled to Coco Palm by seaplane, (awesome!), then by speedboat to Reethi Beach, then seaplane back to Male to pick up the Marine Cruise. Ruth at Secret Paradise will work out all the logistics for you and keep in contact re timetables etc. which are often not confirmed until the evening before. So, that is a summary of our 3-weeks discovering a very small part of the Maldives. The weather was sunny and hot, the sea was warm, the food delicious, the Maldivians lovely and welcoming. It was wonderful. If all you want to do is chill out and swim with the fishes, then The Maldives is for you. My husband was worried he might get bored, but really, there wasn't time to be bored!! I cant wait to visit again. Maybe next time we'll get to see whale shark too!

Visit to Villemaré, Save the Beach project and walking tour. Highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this tour guided by Ub, interesting to see the Save the Beach coral project at first hand having had such an inspiring presentation from Hassan on the Felicity. The snorkeling was well organised. Villemalé is a lovely island with only electric vehicles. The walking tour was excellent. We also really appreciated mulling over life in the Maldives, the world and everything over a cup of tea.

      Lovely Make visit with Shaffaf
Secret Paradise was wonderful and thorough when organizing my Male tour with Shaffaf! He went above and beyond to ensure I had a great visit and even though we encountered a lot of rain at the beginning (he got us raincoats at a nearby shop) we were able to explore so much in a short time. He went the extra mile by making sure I got some vegan food and made my flight on time. I highly recommend this company as they really take great care of their clients.

      Male with Aishath.
Aishath was an excellent guide. She was able to illuminate our walk with many personal narratives. She kept the tour at the appropriate speed given the busy streets.

      Excellent Maldives Snorkeling boat trip
We booked this activity for our visit on a cruise ship. There were 4 retired couples on board a modern speed boat. We were picked up at the pier by Archie, put into 2 taxis and driven to the boat. A ten minute boat ride got us to the first snorkel spot and provided with mask, fins and floatation vest. We were well prepped as to our dive along a reef edge. There were two guides in the water with us; one leading and the other following. We spotted small sharks, clown, zebra fish and others. After about a half hour we got back into the boat to go to the second site. There we saw rays, eels and other different fish. The third spot was a leisurely drift snorkel along another reef where we just floated in a slow current along the reef to the boat. The boat driver and two divers were very attentive to our various swimming abilities. We all felt very safe, supported and enjoyed the experience and highly recommend it.

Huraa with natural pond and mangrove trees
We were driven in a taxis from Male tender port to Hulhumale to board a speedboat to Huraa, This island is where the Four Seasons Resort is located. The claim to fame is that there’s a natural pond with mangrove trees. Saw lots of holes in the sandy area and was told that they were dug by small crabs. Also visited a small home production of tuna sauce. Basically tuna fish bones with some flesh still attached were boiled down in huge pots. Had lunch at a restaurant near where the speedboat was parked.

Informative walking tour on coral reefs and environment
One has to take a ferry boat to Villinmale in Male. The journey is around twenty minutes, Villinmale on map is just east of Male and on Google map is shown as Villinggili. But because a bridge linking Male is being built, it will be called Villinmale just like the island with the airport is called Hulhumale. Only electric motorbikes and buses are allowed on this island. Due to the effort of the NGO organization to educate the students, this island is more ecologically conscious and there’s much less strewn plastic bottles and garbage. The NGO taught students can learn scuba diving to restore the coral beds and to care for the environment and have now in turn able to educate others as well as going into marine related careers. This island is not big as it took about five thousand steps to walk around. This is the first time I’ve seen and tasted Sea Almonds. Coral restoration seems to be making progress. One method is using hexagonal shaped and coated rebars to anchor bits of corals. The students know that their islands are there because of the corals and the beaches are also related to corals. I hope the success of this NGO’s work can be populated to other islands.

      Informative walking tour
The walking tour have us a good understanding of the history and culture of Maldives. Our guide is a learned young lady who has good knowledge of her country and her command of English is also very good. As we toured the city, she brought us to several spots that are significant in Maldivian history including the Mosque that was designated a UNESCO site. We also visited the dry market as well as the fish market. My husband and I learnt a lot about Maldives and that tour made it more than a touristy island. Definitely recommend this tour.

      best in class tour operator
I can understand now why this activity gets so many 5-star reviews. The operator is highly responsive to needs and best interests of customers to ensure best-in-class service and experience. We seek advice of how to store luggage before our transport to our resort island. They responded promptly and gave really good advice. On the day of bad weather, for the safety and best interest of customers, they cancelled the trip. We have received refund in less than 24-hour. We really appreciate all the great service and ease of mind booking this activtity on viator often with the highest rated operators like this. Thank You!!!

      Wonderful ecotour
Really a very special experience! We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to explore local islands, and to learn about the rich history and culture of the Maldives and also to have learned about the unique economic opportunities, as well as the ecological challenges related to expanding development and tourism. We were so grateful for the exceptional qualities our guide, UB, brought to our experience. He was extremely knowledgeable, skilled, flexible, attentive to needs and also fun loving. How fortunate we were! We had wonderful experiences fishing, snorkelling, meeting local people and experiencing local food and culture. Our experience of the Maldives was so rich as a result of this trip and the wonderful qualities our guide contributed.

Shark was an amazing instructor! He taught us so much about ethical practices and showed us nurse sharks, turtles and different kinds of fish. We enjoyed the adventure and learnt a lot about Maldivian sea life. We recommend Secret Paradise to everyone!

Great walking tour of downtown Malé with excellent historical commentary.
Our host Kasey was a local with a knowledgeable background of the history, architecture, politics, culture, and the religion of the Maldives. We visited many historical places and our host was rich in commentary of the places we saw. We were able to engage in sobering discussions about the islands past, present and the possibilities in the future of the island. We were privileged to be taken to see many lovely sights including a beautiful historic mosque many hundreds of years old (we were touched by the spiritual energy in this mosque), a beautiful park and so much more. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in an intelligent, sensitive and interactive tour .

If I could give this 10 stars I would—I ended up with the same guide I had on my first tour with Secret Paradise Maldives, Shark, and once again he did not disappoint.

The weather was choppy on the original tour date that I'd booked, so I coordinated directly with Ruth at the main office to switch my tour to the following day. The weather in the Maldives can shift pretty rapidly, so for anyone considering this tour I'd recommend booking it on a day where if rebooking to a later date would work out if the weather makes going out on the boat impossible.

The sandbar was beautiful, and I got some great pictures there, as well as seeing some fish and birds. We were there for an hour, so it was also a nice moment to relax under the sun, especially as it had been quite cloudy on Hulhumale (where I was staying) earlier in the week and I hadn't had a whole lot of beach time.

The real highlight, though, was the snorkeling. I've had difficulty on previous travels with snorkeling, because something about the snorkel mask always made me claustrophobic and panicky, and I couldn't do it, so I'd just duck dive instead and look at the water life for a few seconds at a time before coming up for air again.

On this trip, though, Shark led me through some breathing exercises beforehand; then we practiced snorkeling in the shallow water at the sand bar before then heading to the snorkeling site, and it worked! It was like nothing I've had the chance to experience—so many varieties of fish, "the whole gang from Finding Nemo was there," I joked with some friends later; we even saw some sharks. It felt like swimming in an aquarium, and Shark would point out things of note as we swam past them.

There were too many clouds at the horizon for a proper sunset, so we didn't get to see much more than the sun rays peeking out from behind the clouds as the sun went down. But this was the best day of my trip to Hulhumale; Shark was the best guide, and Secret Paradise Maldives in particular were professional, quick to respond to messages and very pleasant to work with. Thank you all for such a great trip!

Wow! Thrilled with this long review. Thank you so much for your time to write it and we will gladly take your 10 star rating (if we could ;) ). That's amazing to hear Shark was able to aid you get the full experience of snorkeling for the first time. Feel free to share any pictures of the tour. As you mentioned, weather can turn bad quite quickly but of course this works both ways and I'm happy we were able to move your tour with us to a "good" day. It was a pleasure to have been part of your holiday and we hope to see you again. Kind Regards, Mary

I took two tours with Secret Paradise in June 2022 - 3 Points Snorkeling and Sandbank Snorkeling and Sunset Cruise. Both were definitely worth it, and the Secret Paradise team was excellent - Ruth was very responsive during the booking process, and the boat teams were very professional and helpful. I had a really great time on both trips, and I highly recommend this company.

Ruth is the manager of SPM and she works so hard for her customers, her staff only have good things to say about her, what a wonderful close knit team!

I did the Sandbank Tour with Rumey and it's clear to me she's been well trained with what she does. It was her first time escorting a client solo but the whole time, she went above and beyond to make my experience a pleasure from beginning to end. The snorkelling guide and boat operator were equally as hospitable.

5 stars for SPM, highly recommended by me!

Though it is a late review, it is the one I just had to write as the experience was awesome. I visited sand bank and dolphin cruise with Mash from Secret Paradise. Maldives in itself is a beauty, sand banks are the most amazing thing one should definitely see while in Maldives. I was travelling alone with my daughter and Mash made it a wonderful memorable trip for the little one. Ruth from Secret paradise arranges all the activities and is very punctual and apt in replying to all your queries. During these pandemic times they are taking utmost care with very less group size for everyone/s safety which I loved.

They accept booking even it is just for sole traveller. Come with a guide and captain, manage to do a two hours solid snorkelling at two points and ended with a sunset on a sand bank. The guide (Sha) and his colleague the captain were both very friendly and always check with me if I am feeling ok.

This tour exceeded my expectations . after a 45 minutes boat ride we reached the sandbank . We were given full information on the boat about the marine life in that area . It was my first experience in snorkeling they took a good care of me . First they let me practice in the lagoon then they showed me how to put on the fens then they took me to the open sea around the sandbank . We were two and each had a tour guide close to him ( that was very great ) then we took the boat to another snorkeling site where we saw the stingray fish for 45 minutes . Then we went to see the dolphins and we stayed there until the sunset .
The two tour guides and the bout captain were great and informative and the the trip was full of fun .
It is the best tour and sure this is because of secret paradise

We want to ensure it is both safe and memorable and that it will encourage you to return to the water again. It sounds as though this was the case and we look forward to snorkeling with you again in the future. Take care and stay safe. Kind Regards Ruth

Thanks to the entire Secret Paradise team for giving us the opportunity to enjoy the Maldives and the ocean in a very sustainable manner. Ruth was very kind and helpful in organizing this excursion. The guide Mash and the team are really experienced, dedicated and shared all the information about marine life. We had the opportunity to snorkel in two beautiful places (with amazing fish, turtles, sharks, rays), then we rested on the sandbank, which was also amazing. And on the way back we couldn't miss a beautiful sunset while looking for dolphin sightings! You can't leave the Maldives without experiencing this amazing tour.

On April 20, 2024 I did this tour with Nafsha. The tour was amazing. We went snorkeling in two spots where I saw the beautiful reefs, a reef shark, and many stingrays.

Knowing the tide was descent high, I wasn’t expecting much of the sandbank but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite enjoyable since the water was pretty shallow.

Nafsha really took great care of me, showing me tips for snorkeling and helping me with the snorkeling tube. She was very knowledgeable about the religious practices, cultural traditions, and the marine life in Maldives.

She also brought me a delicious coconut while I was staying on the sandbank. Even though I forgot to bring my dry clothing which I packed in my luggage, Nafsha went out of her way to help with my transport back to Malé to ensure that I could catch my flight and onward trip.

The highlight of the trip was definitely the surprise spotting of Dolphins on our way back to Hulhumale. It was genuinely a beautiful scene to see!

I would definitely recommend the tour if you are untested in doing some offshore activities around Malé.

This was something I was really looking forward to, but I never really intended to go snorkeling because was a non swimmer.
Ruth was extremely kind and patient to make sure I got what I was looking for ( the dolphin sighting) ..
Sha was my guide for the evening. He explained the plan for the day. When he told me I was going to snorkel I was not sure how, because I was not only a non swimmer but it was also my first time in deep waters. Despite all of it, he patiently explained the steps and was boosting my confidence by telling me it is possible to do.. Within 1 hour I learnt swimming and snorkeling which is something I never expected to do..
The day ended with a beautiful sunset and lovely dolphins playing around..
Sha is an amazing teacher and very confident. The kind of guide you know has your back. He is also an extremely good photographer and a singer ☺
Secret travellers are indeed THE BEST in town. I did try out other agencies but the service, the care and the expertise they provide is definitely above the rest...

Hi Grace Thank you for your comprehensive review! I was really pleased to hear from Shaa on his return that you had decided to give snorkeling a go. He is, as you have stated a patient coach and I am sure now that you have have built your confidence this will not be the first and only time. To have the day end as you describe with a perfect sunset and dolphins was the icing on the cake, but something I can not take credit for as sightings do lie with the laws of nature. We look forward to you joining us for more snorkeling adventures in the future. Kind Regards Ruth

I arranged a sunset cruise with Secret Paradise a few days before my arrival in the Maldives. The customer service was really helpful in answering all my questions and they offered an unforgettable experience during my stay. The two local guides made me feel very safe, as I was traveling alone, and I experienced everything that was listed in the tour. I would definitely recommend Secret Paradise if you are looking for a quick exploration around the Atoll.
