Unable to rebook with my 2020 credit
I booked a 2 day Pacuare River lodge trip for my family of 6 people during the summer of 2020. The trip was cancelled due to Covid, and I have reached out to Rios Tropicales by phone, email, and website inquiry to try to rebook for 2021, using my $1900 deposit which they said they would honor. After 2 months of attempts to communicate, I have heard nothing back from Rios Tropicales. I have taken a river trip with them in the past and loved it. I would like nothing more than to take this trip in 2021 and post a rave review. This would require that they respond to me.

refused to honor their cancellation policy and stole $560
Mar 2020
Stole $560 from me. I had a trip booked to Costa Rica for March 2020. Because of Covid, Costa Rica closed it's borders 2 weeks before our trip. Every hotel reimbursed us... except Rios Tropicales. We had cancelled 2 weeks in advance which, according to their cancellation policy we only needed to cancel 2 days in advance. I kept asking for my money back and they kept beating around the bush. Excuses were the financial impact from Covid... yea... we are ALL hurting. That doesn't mean you get to keep my money for no services rendered.
Then they said it would be reimbursed within 30-90 days (LIARS!). They continued with excuses and lying for months and I had to get my credit card company involved and 8 months later I am still fighting for my money back.

They offered NOTHING, not even a credit for a future trip which tells me... they are hell bent on keeping the money for no services rendered. Unbelievable.

The sad thing is, I was a multiple-repeat customer of RT and they have completely lost my business forever (I go to CR every 2 years).

A company with no integrity. And during the worst financial crisis of my lifetime, I am out $560.

River Rafting and Eco Lodge in the Forest of Costa Rica
Feb 2020
My wife and I recently spent 3 days in the safe hands of 'Johnny' and his team from Rios Tropicales. We cannot rate them highly enough, they made our trip safe and fun and exciting. Their knowledge and personalities and love of what they do shone through. They cooked for us, and chatted to us, and gave us a walking tour of the forest.
This trip was the best bit of our recent holiday to Costa Rica, and we enjoyed every other day of the holiday too. Can't wait to come back for more.

Best Trip Ever!!!
Feb 2020 • Friends
This trip was the best trip of my entire life! I couldn't have asked for better tour guides, accommodations, food ect. Otto, Diego, and Sebastian were nothing but welcoming, very informative and fun! Although one member in our group attempted to ruin a portion of the trip the guides pulled through and still made it the best trip possible. I couldn't be more thankful of how everything turned out and I will definitely be returning in the near future. Thank you Rio Tropicales for the most memorable trip of a lifetime!!!!

RAFTING PHOTOS OFFERED AT THE END ARE A SCAM
DO NOT BUY THE RAFTING PHOTOS OFFERED AT THE END! A photographer hired by Rio Tropicales takes photos of rafts at three locations below the lodge on the river. Our photographer (Fernando) took some TERRIBLE PHOTOS. SEE EXAMPLE AT BOTTOM of one of the bad photos followed by a great photo taken by a different photographer used by a different Rio Pacuare rafting company.

PROBLEMS:
1) The photos were EXTREMELY LOW RESOLUTION. The faces were fuzzy. Not out of focus... Just low resolution. This makes the photos pretty much worthless.
2) The shots were always wide shots, so the RAFT WAS TOO DISTANT IN THE PHOTOS. When you zoom in to see faces, then you realize that the resolution is so bad.
3) No shots were NOT IN SEQUENCE. That is to say that EACH SHOT WAS SEPARATE FROM ALL OTHERS AS OPPOSED TO BEING A SERIES OF SHOTS IN A ROW of the best action moments.
4) Fernando said there would be a library of additional photos included in the package. THIS WAS NOT TRUE. THERE WERE NO ADDITIONAL PHOTOS INCLUDED.

These types of photos are fun to have because you can’t take pictures of yourself while rafting. Someone else must do it. That’s why Rio Tropicales hired the photographer.

The company representative said that it was not possible to shoot photos in a series or at high resolution because the rafts move by too quickly. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE! Any pro photographer who shoots action or sports photography will use the “burst mode” (hold the shutter button down and shoot 10 shots per second to get an action series) and they will use high-speed shutter settings and a good camera lens to get great, close-up, high-resolution photos. I have seen many great rafting photos like this on others trips.

The company representative also said that without bright sunlight, you cannot shoot high resolution photos. THIS IS ALSO UNTRUE. Two days earlier I had been in Arenal and bought photos taken by a photographer on the Sky Trek Zipline (highly recommended). This photographer knew how to do it right. Shots were done in very low light (it was raining). Shots were taken in a series that depicts the action of the moment one shot at a time in a series. And the shots were in solid high resolution. You can zoom in and see great detail.

When the company representative says that you cannot shoot the photos as I have described because the rafts move to fast and it’s too cloudy, well that is just COMPLETELY UNTRUE. It’s an excuse. I’ve been rafting many times, including a prior trip on the Rio Pacuare. The photographers always shoot close-ups of the rafts and in high resolution. All action/sports photography does this.

THERE ARE TWO PHOTOS ATTACHED. THE DIFFERENCE IS SPECTACULAR.

FIRST, A TYPICAL BAD PHOTO from Fernando at Rios Tropicales.
SECOND, A GREAT HIGH RESOLUTION CLOSE-UP SHOT, taken a few year ago on the Rio Pacuare from a competitor, Aventuras Naturales.

Same river, same speed of raft, sale locations, same lighting... one bad photographer... one good photographer.

So, why did the Rio Tropicales photographer (Fernando) shoot such bad photos?
1) He doesn’t know how to do it. Or...
2) He chose not to do it.

I don’t know why you would choose to take bad photos. So I assume it’s the first option. Rio Tropicales! Next time hire a photographer who knows what they are doing. And next time, if you promise to add an additional photo library to the package, then actually do it!!!

An exciting and beautiful trip through a rain forest canyon
Jan 2020
Rios Tropicales offers multiple options for river (trips of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days) but the amount of river rafting is the same for all of them. We recommend the two day trip (see below). The time of the longer trips is taken up by hiking, zip lining, and rappelling down a waterfall, all of which are accessed from the lodge at approximately one third of the way down the river.
All trips from San José require an early start (at 5:30 AM) but it is well worth it. After a 2.5 hr van trip from San José over the mountains to their operations center, you have a typical Costa Rican breakfasts for eggs, rice and beans, fried plantains, fruit, and juice.  A large, school-sized bathroom with lockers (for items not going on the overnight trip) is also at the center.
The first day of all trips except the one day trip involves class 1 and 2 rapids and covers the first 1/3 of the river. The one day trip does the whole river (class 1-4 rapids) in about 3.5 hr. The multi-day trips stop 4 times to go swimming and to have a simple but nice picnic lunch. You arrive at the Rios Tropicales Lodge at about 1:30 PM (see listing of Rios Tropicales Lodge for description).
The second day of the two day trip starts with a short (1 hr) hike in morning to a lovely waterfall with a drop of about 30 feet. Rafting starts at about 10:45 AM and lasts for 2.5 hrs, going over rapids of class 1, 2, 3, and 4 through the impressively beautiful jungle canyon. A 15 min van trip takes you back to the operations center, where you can shower, put on dry clothes, and have a simple lunch before the 2.5 hr van trip back to San José, arriving a few minutes after 5:00 PM.
The rafting guides were knowledgeable, professional, and personable. Nonetheless, it is very important to precisely follow the instructions of the guides regarding what to do, and when to do it, in order to safely navigate the rapids.

An outstanding and memorable experience
Jan 2020
We did the two night package, arriving at the lodge late afternoon, after a gentle but beautiful introduction to the River Pacuare. Our room was large and comfortable and the view from the shared balcony outstanding. Hot water was not so hot at times, but hey this lodge is largely self-sustaining, everything has to come in and out by raft. Food was simple, very tasty and plentiful. No wifi, only paths in the jungle to explore and the river to watch or play in, so peaceful. The highlight was the raft out of the lodge, a three-hour thrill filled time on a beautiful and totally remote stretch of river, with virgin rain forest either side. The staff and guides were outstanding, gave us all clear instructions and confidence and enjoyed the thrills with us. All-in-all this was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica.

Every day was unique and amazing!
We did 3 nights, 4 day tour .. and we packed a lot in. We couldn’t have done without the help of our fab guide Esteban. This business is special, the history of the 4 owners, the people they employ, the local community and school they support. It’s all amazing. Esteban made our trip.. and it’s sad but we all felt like we had left one of our party behind when we left! He told us lots of interesting facts about the jungle but we also went zip wiring with him and Diageo (excellent too), hiking with Jorge who is a great botanist (self made but passionate and so knowledgable) and dragged Esteban horse riding with us too! 😁. Horse riding was so relaxing, meandering through the countryside. But the icing on the cake was having lunch in a local families home. I will recommend this company and Esteban for years and I really hope we can come back again one day.

Thrilling!
What an amazing but long day! We joined this trip from San Jose which meant a 5.20 am start. Due to pick ups, road works and traffic it took us over 4 hours to get out to the operations centre. But don’t lose heart it is absolutely worth it.

Thee guides are amazing! Our guide was called Michael. He was so skilful and funny. We also had Pepe who was our safety guy in a kayak. The river is enthralling and deceptive. We had a large range of rapids from class 2 to 4. The teenagers loved it and so did the parents! We had a couple of opportunities to get out of the boat and swim. It was warm.

The time flew but we were rafting for about 3 hours. We also got breakfast and lunch at the operations centre which was really good quality.

This is definitely in our top 3 experiences. Don’t be put off by the transfers it’s absolutely worth it.

Thanks a lot for dealing with our road work in Costa Rica, if the tour wasn't as amazing as you describe it , the experience would be burdened by traffic , glad to know that wasnt the case.
