After communicating with several companies, I chose exploradores outdoor to go to tortuguero. Their prices were great for what they offered. The breakfast and lunch at their exploration center was amazing. I liked that I was able to be picked up in San Jose and dropped off in puerto viejo at no additional cost. They were very accommodating when I requested to stay at a different lodge than what they were offering in their price. I did have to pay a little extra but I was fine with it since it was my top option. Since my lodge was not in the village area, I never felt forgotten about bc they always made sure that a boat came to get me for the village tour and then again the next morning for the canal tour. This company is great especially for a solo female traveler. Most of all, they were very organized and made sure people were wearing masks especially on the bus. When I come back to Costa Rica, I will be sure to contact them again for another tour.

We did the 1 day Pacuare rafting trip and it was an amazing experience! Andres was a phenomenal guide, very capable and a fun presence on the raft. I was nervous about this trip but immediately felt more confident after he guided us through the first rapid. He was also very perceptive about the comfort levels of everyone on our trip, and got more playful as we got more comfortable. He also made it a very educational trip.

Additionally, great value for the cost! We got transportation from Puerto Viejo to San Jose (typically a $200 taxi), two meals and a 4 hour rafting trip. Would absolutely recommend!

We went to Tortuguero form Puerto Viejo and took Exploradores because they had the cheapest prices to go there.

We paid 55$ each to get picked up at the hotel in Puerto Viejo and drop off in the hostel in Tortuguero. The trip includes a breakfast and the fees for the boat and the bus and it should took us about 5h.
Unfortunately it took us 6,5 h because of a closed road on the way to the dock were we had to change the bus to the boat to go into the national park. But this wasn’t a huge issue, because we had a nonvolentary tour through the Chiquita plantations. The road to the dock passes them and the different road we took took us through the whole Plantation and along factories. Which was not bad.

The boat ride to the national park and the boat rider was amazing already during those 1,5h we were surrounded by an overwhelming nature. He stopped every time when he saw something, so we got to see Caimans, River turtles and breeding birds even before we get to the town and the national park.

Positiv Facts:
- the pick us up on time at 6:20
- the continental breakfast at their distribution center
- the price
- the boat ride

Negative Facts:
- the English speaking guide left the bus after they had collect everyone
- the driver doesn’t speak even basic English
- the busses:
- old and not really comfortable
- not made for roads they have to go
- no WiFi like Caribbean shuttle
- not clear schedule after they had collected the costumers. It was not clean when something happens or not and how much time you have during breaks

I am Canadian, been coming to Costa Rica for 25 years. I have also never written a review in my life...I had to do it this time, as I still have not received a refund and the owner is now ignoring my emails.

I purchased the trip because I wanted to go canoeing. Canoeing is the activity of using paddles with usually two or three people in the canoe. The brochure and the sales person both stated the activity would be canoeing. Also, I asked if there was any hidden costs for their all inclusive package. They said NO.

When we arrived, one of the tours we paid for, a guided walking tour of the town. It was NOT a tour, instead it was there to basically tell us that we have to pay for the park entrance fee and that we will be shown how to do this at the end of the tour. Already I was not happy because I felt like I was being scammed. We explained we didn't expect this fee, that we were told that there was not extra costs. We had already paid $200 to do this trip. They admitted that this problem always happens, and although they are affiliated with Exploradores Outdoors, they won't be taking responsibility and we have no choice but to pay this extra $18 dollar fee to enter Tortuga National Park on participate on our canoe trip. Reluctantly, we paid the fee. The next day we arrive to take our canoe trip and we are put into a boat with an engine and sat there while the guide motored through slowly. THIS WAS NOT A CANOE TRIP at all.

I was unhappy and felt that this was NOT what I paid for at all, and didn't receive the trip I had paid for. I contacted head office and over the past few months, and they finally offered to return the entrance fee to me. I never declined the offer, I was asking for a refund on at least the entrance fee and the canoe trip that never happened.
When I said I'm sorry you need to refund me more than that, the owner, Miguel, ignored my emails for about a month....finally this was his response.

Hello Jacelyn,

We offered to cover the entrace fee to the National Park if that left you satisfied. You declined that offer and asked for an ammount that makes no sense. We can not agree to that proposal.

Thank you,

Miguel

Since then I have emailed them to at least get the entrance fee refunded and he is completely ignoring the emails.
I believe he never intended to provide fair customer service and as a result he (being the owner) is also ok with not giving the tours that represent what you THINK you are purchasing.
I feel like if I had gone white water rafting and we ended up in motor boats, this would be the same argument...DO NOT TRUST THIS TRIP- its a rip off and scam.
