- J8209LFamandab0 contributionsWonderful experienceColin is an absolutely lovely person who ensured we tasted all of the great wines of the loire valley. He was very knowledgeable of the wine and the area & overall was a delight to spend the day with. We would book with him again & hope to in the future.Written 21 October 2024
- wardzinski0 contributionsA fabulous day!Fantastic day tasting over 30 wines at 3 very different vineyards - got an authentic and personal experience as the group was small and Martin is well known locally and very knowledgeable. Comfortable transport, super lunch - HIGHLY recommended!Written 7 August 2024
- Kyle35350 contributionsWhat a great tour! What a wonderful day my wife and I shared with Colin on the Natural Wine tour. Colin was a wonderful host for our day trip from Paris. Met us promptly at the train station, and took us to 3 really special wineries, lunch in Chinon, concluding by getting us back to the station on time for our return train. He is incredibly knowledgeable and imbedded in wine culture even beyond the Loire valley. He taught us many new interesting facts about the world of wine. He was a great driver, in a clean car, and was very professional. I couldn't recommend this trip enough for those interested in seeing/leaning about the Loire Valley. Thank you, Colin for the wonderful memoriesWritten 14 July 2024
- mrmerlot140 contributionsOne of the Best Wine Tours EverMy wife and I are visiting the Loire Valley for the first time. Being from Napa Valley, we were quite keen to learn about the specific nature of the local red wine growing and production methods and how they may differ from Napa. After a careful review of tour choices, we chose Colin Elliott - he was responsive to our specific interests and suggestions for certain wineries to visit in our email exchange. We visited four wineries over the day. Colin even took the time to walk us out into a few vineyards to show us the pruning and vine management techniques. As the day progressed, Colin’s friendly style and cultural knowledge came through immensely. He became a new friend , more than just a driver and guide! Colin’s passion for wines really made a difference in our opportunity to learn more about the wines of Chinon, Bourgueil and St Nicolas de Bourgueil . He also made time to visit a Chateau and describe the history related to its presence. We had the best experience, thanks to Colin. We had the best time, learned a lot and had fun!Written 16 June 2024
- TheBriteStuff0 contributionsPrivate Wine Guide for Loire Valley - great for AmericansWe feel so fortunate to have booked a two day Loire Valley tour with Collin. My husband and I were visiting France for the first time on our honeymoon and unfortunately did not know much of the language. As Americans, to have a British guide who spoke perfect French was such an asset in bridging any cultural gaps and making sure we were learning about all the wines we were tasting and the history of the area. Collin has great relationships with many vintners and we enjoyed meeting the families who owned these beautiful properties. We purchased about 5 cases of wine which Collin shipped back to US. After taking a group tour in the Rhône which a bit disappointing, I would say it’s definitely worth it to book a personal guide instead. Will visit again!Written 11 November 2023
- ebash890 contributionsFriendly and knowledgeable tour!Colin was a fantastic host and guide throughout the loire valley for the day. We chose the Best Reds tour with a visit to the gardens. Colin communicated perfectly prior to our trip regarding pick up and was very timely. He helped us navigate around the valley both by driving and communicating with the locals. He helped us purchase and ship wine back to Chicago. Could not have asked for a better day in the loire valley and very much advise anyone to seek out Colin’s services.Written 22 August 2022
- Rishi B0 contributionsA Taste of the Loire Valley You'll Never ForgetThis was a fantastic tour, and we can't thank Colin Elliott enough for the amazing day he gave us! We booked the Chenin Blanc Tour with Colin as part of our honeymoon. We're so glad that we did. Every place we visited was special, and Colin felt like a longtime friend even though we just met him that day. He drove more than an hour from his home to personally pick us up and even adjusted the time he dropped us off to make sure we made it in time to make it for our balloon ride that ended up being postponed from the day before. We had waited more than a year and a half to finally take this tour because of Covid travel restrictions, and it was definitely worth the wait. Colin was gracious with us every time we had to reschedule and we're so glad we got to do it as planned. The wines were incredible, and we got a lot of tastings throughout the day. We also were able to buy bottles at all of our stops at incredibly low prices compared to what you'd pay for similar quality French imported options in the United States. We mostly drank whites but were offered some reds as well. Every wine was special in its own way. Colin made the ride between each of our stops fun with great information about the region, lots of interesting facts about the wines in the area, and good humor. His relationships with the owners of each winery helped us get great access inside the cellars and unique opportunities to see work being done on site. Our adventure took us inside the the caves of Montlouis, to the tasty sparkling wines at Monmousseau, to an excellent lunch in downtown Montrichard, to a family-run vigneron at the Caves du Pere Auguste, to beautiful Chateau Moncontour in Vouvray. It was a day full of laughs and tastes we'll remember for a lifetime. You'll get to the heart of what the Loire Valley is all about if you book. Highly recommended. Thank you again, Colin!Written 1 November 2021
- D9329TErichardl0 contributionsVisit to Loire ValleyThe Wait was Worth it. Having had to delay our visit to France for over a year, the highlight of out first time in the Loire Valley was a day with Colin enjoying the "Best of Reds", lunch in Chinon and a visit to the gardens of Villandry. A perfect combination in the company of Colin who provided appreciated insight into the wines and growing methods of the Loire Valley and expert guidance through one of the most magnificent gardens of the world. A renaissance man in his own right, he kindly shared his life story with us over a wonderful lunch in Chinon. He also orchestrates the shipping of our wine purchases to our home in USA. We highly recommend the Loire Valley Wine Tour, which can be customized to your own interests. We hope to engage Colin's services again in the future.Written 24 September 2021
- rachellem9670 contributionsVery Accommodating and InformativeMy husband and I recently traveled with two other couples and their children to a small town outside of Sancerre for a friend’s 50th birthday. I knew I wanted to do something special for her on her special day and was so thankful to find Colin. We knew that touring a bunch of wineries would be boring for the kids so I asked Colin if he would come to us and do a tasting at the chateau we were staying at. It was great, he showed up with 12 different wines from the Loire Valley and a map that he used in his storytelling of the area-specific varietals and the wonderful winemakers that put their heart and soul in bringing out the terroir of these delightful gems. Colin was extremely knowledgeable. We were a mix of first-time wine tasters through to someone who worked in the wine industry and we all learned something new. He will truly make your experience a special one!Written 7 January 2020
- 979martham0 contributionsLOVED IT! THE BEST!This was easily one of our most memorable days in our entire trip to France. Colin is a wonderful guide to the Loire Valley and one of the most genuine and kind individuals you'll ever meet. We only did a half day tour and wish we did a full or more - we'll be back! Colin brought us to two beautiful, friendly and fantastic wineries. He had us tour the caves, taught us about the entire process - especially champagne which was fascinating - and introduced us to wines he knew we'd love based on personal preference. The day was unpretentious and made us feel as though we were tasting wine with an old friend. Colin pointed out the beautiful sites of the area and shared tales about his passions for good wine. We never once felt like we were being quizzed about our knowledge or our preferences. We had come to the Loire Valley specifically seeking Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre, but left learning so much more about other varietals and with so much wine! We can't wait to make another trip back in a few years. Colin truly made the day spectacular. He had long standing relationships with all the vineyards which created a one-of-a-kind experience, he had a wealth of knowledge on wine and we so enjoyed hearing his stories about gardening design. He was truly just a gem of a person, you will not regret booking a tour with him. It's worth the money alone to book a tour with him for his knowledge of the area and relationships with local vineyards, but where you get your true money's worth is that he is such a pleasant and wonderful guide to the area, putting a smile on our face even during a blustery, windy, rainy day.Written 10 November 2019
- Charles480 contributionsOutstanding 1/2 day wine tour with Colin ElliotThis tour was definitely a great value. We were two couples who took the 1/2 day tour together. We booked it solely based on the description and reviews we found on line and were delighted with our choice. First, Colin is absolutely delightful to hang with. He really made us feel welcome and was full of useful and helpful information about the vineyards, the grapes, the wines and the whole growing & production systems. While we had some rudimentary knowledge of the wine making process, Colin added significantly to our knowledge and made it an enjoyable learning experience. His knowledge of the local wines was complete and honest and really made the tasting experience something special. He also was an excellent adviser when we were selecting wines. By the time the tour was over we were sorry we only had time for the half day tour and felt we actually had spent that time with a friend and a totally enjoyable companion. We are pleased to give Colin and the tour our highest recommendation. Thanks Colin for a wonderful experience.Written 22 September 2019
- Betsy M0 contributionsWine tour - Highlight of our Trip!My husband and I did the half day wine tour with Colin this week for our 1 year wedding anniversary and can't rave about this enough. I came into this a complete novice, simply knowing the loire valley seemed nice, I enjoy white wine and I was looking for somewhere close to Paris to do one overnight trip. I was very overwhelmed during trip planning when I realized how large the loire valley was! Colin was helpful giving me advice on where we should stay and his choice of Amboise as a homebase was ideal for us since we were taking the train and wouldn't have a car. We took the 750am train from Paris arriving in Amboise at 10am. Colin picked us up at 1:30pm and took us to three vineyards in the afternoon. He was so friendly and knowledgeable and authentic and carried conversation so well. He drove us to three different vineyards and we tried flights of wine at each and he took us through the caves and showed us how the wine is made. He also made the trip personalized for us - giving us options as we drove through based on our taste. We chose the general option giving us a mix of different white and reds. The wine is amazing at each vineyard and Colin can set you up w/ shipping back to the US. Now that we are back, we wish we had taken him up on this and brought back more. We bought 5 bottles and took them back in our suitcase on the plane. Having just met him, it felt immediately like we were traveling through wine country with an old friend. My only regret is not spending more time in the Loire Valley!Written 12 October 2018
- djsanta120 contributionsWonderful Loire Valley ExperienceWe had a delightful two days with Colin traveling the Loire Valley. Colin is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to wine and horticulture. On top of that, he is great fun and full of interesting and enjoyable stories. Colin takes great care in making sure you get the most of your experience with everything being tailor made. Lastly, Colin can manage shipping wines back home, which is important in the Loire Valley. It was a treat to spend our two days with Colin in the Loire Valley.Written 10 June 2018
- betsycook850 contributionsDelightful wine tour!!We had a wonderful day touring and tasting the Loire Valley wines with Colin. He is charming and knowledgable. - Dawn H0 contributionsWhat a Fabulous Day!We added this to our trip and I must say I wasn't sure about an all day long wine tour..............but, OMG is was the highlight of our trip. What glorious countryside to enjoy from the comfort of the luxury tour bus that brought us around the area. Hugo, our tour guide, brought the castles we visited to life with his rich storytelling of the owners and their mischiefs of the time. The wine tasting was exceptional as was the luncheon. To this day, I have become a rose wine drinker. Who knew rose wine wasn't all sweet??? It was a magical day with many wonderful memories and new friends met. I strongly encourage you to add this tour to your Paris visit. It is a nice balance of city bustle with countryside ambiance. Enjoy!Written 27 February 2018

My friends and I had the best experience on this tour! Colin took us to 4 exceptional wineries on our quest to find the best Sauvignon Blanc. We experienced everything from small family wineries to one larger corporate winery with Sancerre. He even brought us to an adorable town for lunch.
Can’t recommend Colin and Loire Valley Wine Tours enough! He works to customize your private tour to meet your requests and what you want to try! He also facilites getting wine home to the States! And he is super knowledgeable about wines and the region and is a delight to be with for the day!

A truly enjoyable day. Colin is a knowledgable and informative guide not just in terms of the wine but the local history as well. He included fascinating insight into the techniques of wine making both traditional and modern and is obviously well trusted by the winery owners.

Sadly I was not informed by TripAdvisor that you had left this kind note; I would certainly have responded earlier had I known.
Thank you so much for touring with me. I am delighted you enjoyed your day in the Loire Valley.

Colin is a charming, engaging Englishman, who was a pleasure to talk to as he drove my wife and me around the French countryside and as we dined at a fabulous restaurant in Vouvray for lunch. It is obvious that Colin knows and loves the wines of the Loire.
Colin picked us up at our B&B, a chateau near Bléré. We visited four wineries during our one day tour. Three of the four wineries are regular stops for Colin in Vouvray and the Touraine – the owners and their staffs were friendly and informative and the wines were excellent and reasonably priced.
Weeks before we left for France, I had sent a list of a handful of exceptional wineries to Colin and asked that he try to get us into one or two if possible and let him know what kind of experience we were looking for. Several didn’t work for one reason or another or Colin was concerned that the experience might not be what we were looking for, but as Colin told us, he begged, pleaded, perhaps even groveled to get us into Clos Naudin, which I had considered to be the most desirable on my list and least likely to be able to spare the time for two tourists and their guide. While I was surprised that he was able to get us in, I was thrilled when Colin told me that we were going to meet Philippe Foreau, the proprietor and grandson of the founder Clos Naudin, which has been handed down from father to son since the late 1920s. (We even rushed a bit at lunch to ensure we would be on time.) M. Foreau, gracious and accommodating, personally conducted the tour of his cellars and poured his exceptional wines for us (recommending the perfect food pairing for each along the way). M. Foreau is passionate about, and justifiably proud of, his wines and Colin was the perfect guide for the Clos Naudin tour, enthusiastic and engaged – he was thoroughly enjoying himself, as were we. One of the great testaments to Colin was that, although M. Foreau speaks no English and we are limited to phrase book French, Colin’s translations made our conversations flow effortlessly, whether we were discussing fermentation processes or M. Foreau’s grandfather carving the caves out of the hill below the vineyards beginning almost 90 years ago. Our tour was one of the highlights of our entire trip to France and we really couldn’t have done it without Colin.
As others have mentioned, Colin has gone to some lengths to set up an arrangement with a shipper who can get your wines back home. My recommendation is to reserve that service for higher end wines that may be hard to come by when you are home and to squeeze less expensive bottles into your bags. While we bought a substantial amount at Clos Naudin, I now wish we had bought more – particularly now that I’ve realized that it is impossible to find the lovely 2007 Clos Naudin Reserve Brut back home and I’m now in a conundrum about when I should open the ones I have.
One side note: While we did not take advantage of Colin’s tours of Loire chateaux, given that Colin is a horticulturist by training and a professional garden designer and teacher of garden design, I suspect he would be fantastic at chateaux with extensive gardens – I would think, especially, Chateau Villandry.
In short, we couldn’t be happier that we engaged Colin and we enthusiastically recommend him to you.

Dear Rex,
Thank you for the review of your trip – it had me blushing from top to toe!
I remember the tour well of course, partly because I was afraid I would not be able to provide what you wanted; that list of winemakers, sent to us via your travel agent, was a veritable Who’s Who of the Loire Valley wine industry and I imagined many would not speak to mere mortals like me.
In the end it all went very well and the Clos Naudin visit was certainly a highlight of my year. Thank you for causing it to happen. I am sure that I can help you buy and ship some more bottles and I would be delighted to have an excuse to go back.
The bottle of Clos Naudin Reserve Brut 2007 that you kindly gave me was opened when our son came to visit from England: it was a really special family moment. I trust you will do much the same over the fast approaching holiday season and that you will warmly remember your time in the Loire Valley.

My wife and I were looking for a great wine tour in the Tours region of the Loire Valley and we certainly were not dispointed. But Colin and Chantel offer so much more! We toured with Colin and Chantel led a different tour. Our paths crossed, but each tour was tailored to the desires of their guests so we did not see what Chantel's group saw.
Our day with Colin was filled with his wealth of information and insights. He is certainly a wine expert on the Loire, but we were amazed by his knowledge of French history. We visited Chenonceau, and Colin gave us a better tour of the chateau than we could have expected. No headsets for us! Room by room, and floor by floor, Colin was spot on with just the right amount of explanation and detail.
Did I mention that Colin is an expat from England? Chantel is a French girl. Colin has a wonderful way of bonding with strangers, but his understated and charming manner are an instant comfort to spend the day with.
There is so much to see, and wine to taste in the LoireValley we may have to return again soon. We definitely will tour with either Colin or Chantel if we do! It was an exceptional day!

Many thanks for your review: you are too kind.
Obviously I had to keep you away from Marie-Chantal and her tour as much as possible. If you saw how much fun they were having you were bound to abandon me and go over to her group!
I enjoyed the company of you and Jo and of course we would be delighted to welcome you back any time. There is so much more to see.
Thanks again.

WARNING: Don't go to the Loire Valley to drink wine and see a Chateau or two unless you book a tour with Colin! I have never left a comment on TripAdvisor before (although I do travel a lot). However, felt the need to do so with this excursion. If you are looking for great service before, during, and after a Day Tour, want great company and conversation, Colin is hands-down the perfect English gentleman/tour guide.
My partner and I spent the week leading to Valentines Day in Paris, which leaves plenty of time to explore the Loire Valley for a day trip. However, since neither of us speak French nor wanted to drive or go at it alone, I did my research and found Colin and his company (Yes, all the reviews here are accurate, he truly goes out of his way to meet a client's requests). It's only a 1hr train ride on the TGV, and then we spent the next 8 hours drinking (3-4 vineyards), laughing, eating (perfect rustic lunch with wine) and even squeezed a visit at Chateau Chenonceau. Before our arrival, he sent us specific questions about what we wanted to drink and see, and then even sent us train schedules.
I think the best part of the trip was seeing how important the Loire Valley was to Colin. His love of french wine, horticulture, and the people of the Loire is something you can't find in many corporate tour companies. However, with Colin, you felt like you were visiting a friend and he was taking you to see all his favorite colleagues and sights. My only worry about writing this review is that he will get too popular :-)
If you are reading this, thanks for the amazing time Colin! L&N

When life gets challenging, I read reviews like yours and remember how lucky I am. Thanks for your kind words.
What I recall is spending the day with two really pleasant people, showing off the Loire countryside, its people and its wine; eating, drinking (in moderation, obviously) and laughing together.
......and the great thing is, this is how I earn my living. Don't tell anyone, or they'll all be doing it !

My husband and I had a great two day tour with Colin. He picked us up from the train station and delivered us to our hotel each day. He gave us recommendations on how to travel there and where to stay. He took us to a variety of wineries and shared a wealth of information about wine making, tasting, history... Really, anything we asked, he had an answer for. We visited chateau chenonceau which was magnificent and a nice break from all the wine tasting. Colin had a wealth of information about France, in general, but especially the Loire Valley. I think we underestimated the value of having a native English speaker who is fluent in French take us around. Colin easily navigated any conversation we had with the locals and was obviously a regular at all of the places we visited. He even figured out a way to ship wine home to us - although shipping wine is, not surprisingly, expensive. But, the cost of French wine was actually very reasonable so it sort of offset the cost if shipping, we loved the experience and look forward to sharing our wine and the stories behind acquiring the bottles.

We are seeing more and more clients stay for two days, a week, or even longer, and this enables us to show you even more of the delights of the region. It was a pleasure to offer this opportunity to you both.
Translation is a major part of my work these days and it is by talking to the locals that you get the best from the experience. They are rightly proud of their region and keen to share with visitors.

We agree with all the five-star reviews above. Colin was knowledgeable, informative and interesting. He provided insights we never would have known. A thoroughly enjoyable day, well-spent, that we will remember for a long time.

Yet again I have to apologize for not having responded earlier to your kind review. If you remember with affection the Loire Valley and my contribution to your day, I can ask for no more. I am delighted you enjoyed your tour.

We loved our day of touring with Colin. He arrived promptly at 9:30am in a clean and comfortable touring car, and whisked us off to taste the wines of Pierre Auguste near Chenonceau. Then on to tour the castle of Chenonceau. Lovely! Then lunch at a little cafe in the area...delicious! When Colin discovered there was a wine on the menu that held sentimental value to me, he bought a bottle for us to have with lunch! How great was that?! After lunch we visited the Montlouis co-op, and one more winery in Vouvray. We were even able to make a few purchases and send them home. All in all, it was a great day, Colin was wonderful, and we would do it again. Well done.

We, an American couple visiting the region for the first time, had the most amazing visit to the Loire Valley with Colin as our wonderful guide! The short version of this review is that we cannot recommend it highly enough, do not hesitate to book!
Colin spent the full day with us, taking us to four wineries throughout the Touraine with a lovely lunch in the middle. I believe we did a slightly modified version of this tour, opting to skip the Chateau visit in favor of more focus on wine!
To begin, booking our experience was basically effortless. When I first reached out to inquire about availability, Colin offered suggestions for itineraries based on our preferences, and made clear that we could be flexible throughout our day depending on what we most enjoyed. He also gave helpful guidance on how to get to the Loire Valley from Paris (a very easy and comfortable TGV trip from Gare Montparnasse to St. Pierre de Corps). Colin picked us up exactly on time at the train station, and then ferried us among the wineries in his spacious and comfortable SUV. During our journeys he offered details about the history and geography of the valley, which really helped put our visit in context and added interest to our time spent traveling.
At each winery, Colin's relationships with the proprietors ensured that we were treated as welcomed guests. In addition to tasting fabulous wines at each location, both Colin and those providing the tastings shared a wealth of information about growing, wine making, understanding french labeling, aging wine, and more. We could not have asked for a better day of learning, laughing and enjoying truly spectacular wines.
Most importantly for American visitors, Colin also provides all of the information you'll need and assists with making arrangements for purchasing and shipping wine to the U.S., so you are free to purchase to your heart's content (and we certainly did!)
Overall, this experience was everything we hoped for and beyond. We are already looking forward to planning our next visit to the Loire Valley to take another tour with Colin!

I often ask if clients would write a review for us on TripAdvisor and sometimes they do, but this was well above and beyond the call of duty!
Thank you so much for the time and trouble you put into your comments after your recent tour. A very comprehensive and flattering review for which we are very grateful.
We are passionate about our adopted home here in the Loire Valley and delighted to have the opportunity to show it off to American clients.
There is so much more to see and I look forward to the next time you come to visit.

My husband and I had a fabulous time being escorted all over the Loire Valley! Colin is extremely knowledgable on the regional history, horticulture and most importantly WINE!
Having a guide, who spoke the language and knew the area, allowed us to truly enjoy the experience, without the stress of driving, navigating and struggling to communicate (our French is non-existent!). Also, Colin has many relationships with the local vineyards, so we often were treated to private tours and tastings by the owners - which was a real treat! We met hard working and passionate growers, who were more than gracious to provide a glimpse of their world. For anyone who is serious about wine, history and culture, you will not be disappointed! We are already dreaming up our next trip! Thank you to Loire Valley Wine Tour!

You are too kind, but I am delighted you enjoyed your tour of the region and proud to have shown you some of the best wine and food producers during our three day adventure.
It was a real pleasure to get to know you and I do hope you decide to return to the Loire Valley soon. In the mean time, I am organising the delivery of the wine you bought while you toured.
We await your email for your next visit!
