About
See more of Watarrka National Park on a half-day tour that features a guided hike to the rim of Kings Canyon. Experience the dramatic landscape of Australia’s Red Centre up close including sandstone cliffs, hidden waterholes, and caves. Expect a challenging hike of several miles with uneven terrain and uphill sections, and sweeping views of Kings Canyon throughout the trek. The Creek Bed Walk offers an easier alternative if desired. Please note that for safety reasons, the rim walk is only offered seasonally in the cooler months.

Proud Of Our Sore Legs
This certainly is not for someone who is not fit or does not like climbing up and down. But....it is the best experience. You start by climbing up the rocks like a goat with I think 500 steps- seemed like 5000. Hehe. Once up the top, you will see beautiful formations, some amazing colours and beautiful wild-flowers. Do make the effort to see Cotterills look-out and the garden of eden. ( These are two extra walks which are both approx 600 metres return). The rangers have done a magnificent job of this walk and it can take 3-4 hours with no place for a toilet, so make sure you go to the clean toilets at the start of the walk. The walk took us 3 hours 5 mins and we were definitely not pushing ourselves! At the beginning, you can also fill up your water bottle with fresh water. Please do not go too close to edges for your perfect selfie as you will fall over and then you definitely will not have any more selfies! Definitely worth making the effort.

Dear Xanerin, Thanks very much for your honest review and it sounds like you had an awesome time climbing and walking around Kings Canyon. It is a good walk around the rim but it is worth it for the views and seeing such a magical formation of nature. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the Red Centre. Thanks, The Team at AAT Kings

What to expect from a guided walk
Jun 2021
The rim walk was absolutely spectacular. The track is very well marked and information boards along the way are interesting. Unfortunately our guided walk did nothing to enhance our experience. The guide had no local knowledge of the landscape and could only repeat what we could read for ourselves on the boards. Furthermore, despite saying walk at your own pace, there was little opportunity to stop to enjoy the views and do anything other than quickly snap a photo and rush to catch up. Despite having to sign a waiver that we would carry two litres of water, we weren’t given any rest breaks to stop and have a drink. What is suggested to be a three to four hour walk was completed in 2 3/4 hours. I’m dreadfully disappointed that something that was meant to a highlight of my first trip to central Australia was spoilt by an incompetent guide. I wish we had done the walk independently.

We did the kings canyon last week I got halfway up but a fear came over me climbing the steps and said to my friends I cannot do this felt unsafe but my two friends did the climb and did the four hour walk In Two hours I did the bottom section looking up the canyon seeing the walkers up the top they looked like a fly standing on the ledges, I sat talking to people in a nice tranquil spot enjoying the budgies etc and talking to many AAT passengers etc took many pics from below but I think you need strong knees to do the climb the couple I went with said I missed out on a beautiful sight

Hello happyaussie255100 Thank you for leaving us a review. We can understand your hesitation in competing the Rim Walk as it is a quite the steep climb and appreciate that you made the best choice for yourself. Kings Canyon is a highlight of the Red Centre and definitely worth the visit and we are happy that you found enjoyment in completing the Creek Walk even though you missed out on some of the sights from above. Thank you again for your review and we hope to see you on another AAT Kings tour in the future. Regards, The AAT Kings team.

Guide was Markus at the kings canyon resort
Mar 2021
We booked this late afternoon direct at the resort reception and Markus met ourselves and 1 other couple right on 6am for the short drive to the canyon.
Markus was just sensational in all aspects amd the walk itself was an absolute highlife of our extensive road trip throughout central Australia
His knowledge, interactions and general interests was worth every cent and so much better than doing the walk by ourselves

Must do!
Definitely worth the effort. I have done this walk twice , once 20 years ago.
Get there at sunrise before it gets too hot & take lots of water. Be very careful & look where you tread. The scenery is SPECTACULAR!

A great experience but some unnecessary risk?
Mar 2020 • Solo
My King’s Canyon experience was part of a 4-day tour with AAT Kings through Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions. Our driver Gaz gave great advice, and our guide for the Rim Walk was also really good. What none of us could understand, however, was, unlike the walk with the guide from King’s Canyon Resort, which departs at 6:30 am, why the AAT-guided Rim Walk didn’t start until 8:30? This effectively means that participants complete the last part of the walk between 10:30 and 11:30 when temperatures are soaring. We really felt that this puts AAT clients at unnecessary heightened risk. I still highly recommend this tour, and AAT Kings staff were extremely re: our safety. But I would really urge AAT Kings organizers to reconsider the start time.

Hi kaz51, Thank you for leaving us a review! We are so glad that you enjoyed your tour with AAT Kings. We are extremely proud to have drivers and guides who have so much passion & knowledge for this area. In regards to your comments about the timing of the walk, this was altered due to operational reasons and rather than cancelling the walk, we joined our two Kings Canyon groups together. We do appreciate your feedback regarding the heat and will pass this on to relevant management. Thank you for travelling with us in the Red Centre, we hope to welcome you back on board an AAT Kings tour again soon!

Kings Canyon “grim” walk
We did the half day tour to kings canyon from Ayers Rock resort starting out at 4.15am!! We hadn’t realised that it was a 3.5 hour journey in each direction. This made the creek walk which is also offered as an easy option not really viable as it takes about an hour whilst the rim walk is about 4hrs plus.
It is a very hard climb to get up to the rim, which we had expected - but don’t let anyone kid you that once up there it is a nice flat easy walk! It is very uneven, and involves a lot more climbing. The scenery is interesting but in our view not worth the effort or the journey time.
We went with AAT Kings and the staff were very helpful.

Hi there, Thank you for your review. It is a little disappointing to hear that you hadn't been given all of this information at booking time, as all AAT Kings documentation does mention the length of this day, and both of the walks in detail. We are pleased to hear however that you enjoyed our friendly & knowledgeable staff. Thank you again for leaving AAT Kings a review, and we hope to see you on tours in the future!

Allie & Rolo - excellent guides and coach driver
Sep 2019
We had an option to do the Rim Walk or Canyon Walk. We chose the Rim Walk and Allie was our guide. On the rim walk the first part is the hardest, as there area 500 steps to get past. The steps are stones in set concrete, which is very well done, but are at irregular heights which makes it a bit harder. Allie was very patient with us all. We took the steps in 200 lots which was great. The rest of the walk was great and the scenery was breathtaking. Take plenty of water. The recommendation is no less than 2 litres.

A wonderful place to visit
Recently visited this place on a AAT Kings tour. Our crew were wonderful. Melissa took us for a rim walk in the canyon. She gave us lots of information of the area, local indigenous information, fauna and flora. She kept us well informed throughout the walk. Highly recommended.
