Lived up to expectations with everything listed in the description being amazing. Staff were warm, professional and informative and ensured we had a great day. Perfect amount of time at each place and fast enough boat to make it feel like you haven't wasted most of the day getting to each destination. We recommend stopping by Boatshed on the board walk after you're done for the day to enjoy happy hour/ cheap tapas/ relaxed water views

We booked the Michaelmas Cay & Hastings Reef Day Cruise from Cairns. The meeting point was easy to find and the crew were very friendly and helpful. The Seastar only takes small groups, which makes the trip very enjoyable. The stinger suits and snorkel gear provided were in great shape. The boat was spacious and easy to exit and re-enter for snorkeling. We enjoyed the boat trip out to Michaelmas Cay and the Seabird Sanctuary. The snorkelers were brought to the small island, where we put on our snorkel gear and did a shore entry for our first snorkel. This site was my favorite as the coral is in wonderful shape with lots of fish and turtles (5). Before heading to our next stop of Hastings Reef, the crew provided a great buffet lunch. At Hastings Reef, the snorkelers were separated into 2 groups with a guide for each group. The snorkel guides were great at not only making sure everyone was safe, but also pointing out things we might have missed otherwise. A glass bottom boat tour, dives for certified and first time divers were also offered. As a bonus, the snorkel guides took pictures and posted them to their Facebook page for everyone to access for free. The Seastar crew are very safety conscious. Safety numbers were assigned to each guest and followed up on periodically throughout the trip to make sure everyone was accounted for. Also safety boats were in the water that would check on any snorkelers that appeared to be in distress or that had swam too far from the boat. We thoroughly enjoyed our day of snorkeling with the crew of the Seastar and highly recommend them.

Our Seastar Great Barrier Reef Island and Reef Tour was amazing. This moderate-sized boat takes out a maximum of 36 guests. The staff did an excellent job of preparing us for the adventure. We were provided with full body stinger suits (including hoods) to protect us from jelly fish stings, flippers and snorkeling equipment.

We visited two different locations. At the first stop, smaller boats transported us to a tiny bird island (Michaelmas Cay) from which we were able to walk from the beach into the water and then swim out to the reef. This mild experience was good preparation for our next stop.

The second location was in much deeper and rougher water. There, we jumped off the back edge of the boat and were surrounded by a massive area of reef. Some of the area was very deep but in some spots the reef was closer to the surface of the water. We were warned not to touch or bump the reef because we could damage it. The strong waves made swimming difficult. I selected to get out of the water and take the glass bottom boat ride which was also offered.

Throughout the day, the Seastar staff took photos which they posted online that evening and which were available for us to download.

The staff was so gracious. When we returned to the starting dock, the staff had gotten off of the boat and thanked us as we left. The entire day was an incredible experience.

Warning:
When we boarded the boat, we were offered the option of purchasing motion sickness tablets for $3. If you ever get motion sickness, come prepared with your own medication or patch or purchase the tablets offered on board. The ride to and from the reef takes over an hour and the water can be turbulent. Especially on the return trip, the boat traveled very fast over choppy water. Although some of us had taken the motion sickness medication, it was still necessary for us to stare at the horizon the entire trip back (to prevent us from feeling queasy).

Wow thank you for such a comprehensive review. It sounds like you had a great day out on the reef. Motion sickness tablets are a must if you get seasick as they enable you to enjoy your day but you do need to take them straight away so as to give them time to get into your system. Hastings reef is amazing and now that we have the coral tree nursery in this area it is a great way to show people what is being done to regenerate the reef. We hope to have you travel with us again.

Disappointing tour overall. The weather was really poor which meant many people were sick on the way out and visibility was very poor at Michaelmas especially. I'm not sure whether that was the only reason we saw very little there as we saw nothing of much interest on the glass bottom boat and the guy taking us couldn't answer many questions. Hastings was better as there was better light and more to see.

On both snorkel tours, we were unable to hear anything from the guide and both times the guide left suddenly saying the tour had ended and we had free time. These snorkel tours were really underwhelming.

Getting on the boat and allocating equipment and first intro was done efficiently but after this it didn't seem to be managed as well and it wasn't clear who was running things or responsible for explaining things and things kind of happened. Most staff were friendly, though many were clearly new, and weren't going out of their way to make this a memorable experience as happens on many boats like this.

All in all a pretty average boat trip in bad weather which meant we saw very little and it wasn't a comfortable day. The weather is not their fault clearly, but we expected more from the reviews so felt generally underwhelmed and felt the staff service and the snorkel and glass bottom boat trips especially should have been better.

This was an incredible experience! The captain and crew were young, passionate, and safety conscious, and very experienced. the trip was well organized, small number of people (36 max.) and went to 2 different beautiful sites (Michaelmas Cay & Hastings Reef (on the outer reef). Very different experiences both awesome! We were the only boat at Hastings & got to Michaelmas early so were done as the other boats started to arrive. We spent close to 3&1/2 hours actually snorkeling between the 2 sites and had to be asked to come in. The coral & fish and other animals were plentiful, colorful, and diverse (blue spotted rays, green turtles, sea cucumber, starfish, giant clams and more fish than I can recount. The crew gave guided snorkel tours and let you snorkel on your own. Only a few people scuba dived and the water was so clear that I do not think you need to do it. The crew talked about their partnership with the Reef Restoration Foundation and showed us some of the research and projects that they were working on together. Part of our fee went to this project. It was small and informal and just what we were looking for. The larger tours had over 100 people. We booked this ourselves but when we went to a tour guide to book another tour to the rainforest he asked what group we went on for the Great Barrier Reef and when we told him he said it was on of the 2 top outfits. They had gear and food and were very attentive. It was the BEST experience! I would recommend Seastar to anyone and highly encourage anyone to be sure they visit the Great Barrier Reef. A lifetime experience.

Ok I’m going to be honest here. We ended up booking Seastar by default as they were the only one that could provide transfers following COVID (when taxis were also in scarce supply) but we are very happy we did. The two reefs we went to offered very different experiences and lived up to my expectations of the Great Barrier Reef - clear waters and amazing reef. The equipment was quality and the crew were fantastic - personable, knowledgeable and always on the lookout from a safety perspective. They even ensured someone who was scared to snorkel was able to so they too could also enjoy the experience. Special shout out to Susie, Liam, Alba, Michael and the Captain.

The two negatives are the unhappy crew and the seastar business rules/policies.

The policies that were originally designed to contribute to the success of Seastar operations now act as roadblocks to their passengers’ experience onboard. Seastar has rules in place around diving charges and diving forms. The rules are enforced due diligently by the crew. Unfortunately, no proper procedures are put in place by the management to ensure that the crew members spend time to explain the rules in details to passengers without rushing.
As soon as passengers enter the boat they are asked to purchase diving package. Passengers are shown a laminated sheet which listed all conditions that may prevent them from diving. This is done very fast without proper explanation because the boat is about to sail. There is a charge of 5 dollars for starting filing out the form and not following through with the diving. I was not eligible to dive because I was flying soon after the cruise. Given that the whole process of getting on the boat is very rushed I didn’t see the question. The diving instructor was eager to sign me for diving. Hence, I filled out the form and was charged 5 dollars. I ultimately felt like I was deceived into completing the form which is particularly disappointing from a luxury orientated cruise operator. It’s sad because I really was looking forward to the experience on board of seastar. Ultimately, it was ruined by the small incident.

I wrote about this to the management. Unfortunately, it appears they have received similar complaints in the past and by their response they do not intend to change their on-boarding process. I really hope Seastar management reconsiders their on-boarding process and think about ways to do it without rushing. I also hope they invest in making their crew happy. You live and work in a great place.

Hello Ekaterina, Thank you for your review. As you have said, the laminated sheet is given to you on boarding to ensure that you can check to see that you do not have any conditions which may prevent you from diving before completing the official medical and insurance form. A form which had a copy of the exact same questions as on this medical and insurance questionnaire. A questionnaire we are required to purchase for insurance. Our procedure was followed correctly, whereby after giving you the laminated form and before handing you the official form the instructor asked if there were any problems where you confirmed that there were no issues. In addition to the medical and health questions, this form clearly asked whether you were flying, a very important consideration if you intend to dive as you require at least 12 hours from completing a dive to be able to fly safely. Also, when you boarded Seastar you had one of our brochures, on which is the same clear warning about diving and flying. This warning is also repeated on our website. We cannot be held responsible if you did not read the sheet.

We had two full days in Cairns so we opted for the Seastar outer Great Barrier Reef trip and we were very happy with our decision. We selected them because they had smaller boats and left early to beat the crowds to the snorkel sights. They were very organized, professional and made the day fun. They watched after you while in the water and we felt very safe and in good hands. They took great care of you the whole day. We had a guide show us around the reef sights and then were allowed to go on our own to see the reef. They gave us a really good lunch and made the day fun. My husband and I are seniors but have done a lot of snorkeling and we had no problems getting on and off the boat. It was a perfect day for us. We would highly recommend this tour.

Had the most amazing day!
The staff work so hard and are really friendly.
We were first time snorkellers and they made us feel very safe with lots of advice about how to use the equipment and what to do.
Had a nice chat with Jasmine on the way out to the reef and she gave us lots of advice.
We stayed close to the instructors to begin with until we had got our confidence.
There was a lovely meal plus snacks included, and they catered well for my gluten free diet.
They take lots of photos and upload them to Facebook so you can download them with no extra charge.
We had proper safety briefings before we left and before we got in the water at Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef. We had stinger suits to wear which were fine.
We also went out on a glass bottomed boat and had a talk about the coral and the reef.
This is a really professional outfit and a small group of participants; there are good places to sit on the boat. You can see everyone has their job to do and they get on with it. No messing about.
I would thoroughly recommend this tour; at 50+ this is something we thought we might be a bit old to try for the first time, but no. Seastar gave us the confidence to go out on the reef when we were real novices, and have even inspired us to do more in the future.

This was an amazing experience in every aspect. Seastar's staff were very professional, helpful and friendly and put effort into ensuring everybody had a lovely day with personalised service and a great snorkelling experience. The vehicle was very comfortable and spacious and the group size was not too large making it easier to receive a better experience. Michaelmas cay and hastings reef were both great locations with a decent variety and amount of fish and coral. Saw a manta ray at Michaelmas reef and that was definitely the highlight. Would definitely go with these guys again and 100% recommend!
