    Port Arthur Historic Site
Stop: 10 hours - Admission included
Join us for a fun and action-packed day out on the Tasman Peninsula. Explore, discover and learn with our guides as we enjoy a variety of activities, walks, sightseeing, history, chocolate tasting and much more! Today is action packed and fast paced, so we make an early start from Hobart and drive directly to the stunning Tasman Peninsula. This area has amazing history, fascinating stories and spectacular scenery. It is also home to Australia’s highest sea cliffs. We enjoy the panoramic views of the area from Pirates Bay Lookout which provides a great vantage here of the surrounding area. Passing through Eaglehawk Neck and “The Dogline” our Tour Guides will share with you some truly amazing history and stories of the area. Then we begin one of Tasmania’s “Great Short Walks”. We follow a spectacular track, of around 2 km’s along the Waterfall Bay cliff top. The walk takes around 45-60 minutes, is undulating, but categorised as an easy walk. The track concludes at the remarkable rock formations of Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen. Continuing our journey, we arrive at the Port Arthur Historic Site. As we enter the Port Arthur Historic Site, there is a wealth of information and history to take in and you will have ample time to explore and discover the nooks and crannies with around 4 hours on site. Your entry includes a complimentary Harbour Cruise around the Isle of the Dead and a guided walking tour with one of the Site’s expert guides. Discover the grim and violent history of the early Australian Penal system and get a sense of the isolation experienced by the convicts in this “inescapable prison”. With around 4 hours here, you have ample time to walk amongst the main penitentiary; see the solitary confinement cells and many more buildings in this World Heritage open air museum. On our return to Hobart, we make a stop at Federation Chocolate Factory, a small family run boutique chocolate stop, with a variety of chocolate flavours to sample. Further along we arrive in the late afternoon into historic Richmond Village. Meander the streets, stop for a coffee, visit the Lolly Shop and walk across Australia’s oldest bridge still in use – a convict built sand-stone bridge, reported to be haunted! Finally, before we re-enter Hobart we stop for a fabulous view across Hobart from a local lookout. A picturesque way to return to the city. We drop you back to your Hobart City accommodation around 6.00pm. (Airport Drop Offs around 5.00–5.30pm – available only with arrangement at time of booking) Highlights • Visit Port Arthur Historic Site (4 hours) • Photograph spectacular views from the Waterfall Bay Cliff Top Walk (easy grade 2km) • See the Tasman National Park highlights – Devils Kitchen & Tasman Arch • Enjoy the stories from Pirates Bay Lookout, Eaglehawk Neck & The “Dogline” • Sample the local chocolates made at Federation Chocolate Factory • Visit historic Richmond Village • Enjoy the spectacular view at a local Hobart City lookout

Not the Port Arthur trip
Oct 2021
Not the tour if you want to enjoy a day at Port Arthur. Pick up in Hobart in a very old tired mini bus with not so clean floor and seats.
Too many things in one day to really enjoy the day. A short stop for coffee and rest rooms on the way. A Stop at the Cliff Top saw lovely views but we did not expect the almost 1 hour bush walk to Waterfall Bay. Cold and windy so we felt this part could have been averted. Finally got to the other side to meet the tour guide to find more bush walking to see "something" that was closed so around to Tasman Arch where the mini bus was parked. Next was on the Un Zoo which we had paid for only to find we were left for an hour to see one little old Tassie Devil be fed. Then a quick bird show which lasted about 10 mins because the birds didn't come. After eventually being picked up, off the the Lavender Farm to pick up the sole person there. They informed the driver 15 minutes would have been plenty of time. Eventually we finally arrived at Port Arthur just in time for the 12.30 walking tour, . As it ended we were to head over to the boat cruise for 1.20. After it finished we had less than 1 hour to look around Port Arthur. The entire day while somewhat organised was very time poor for Port Arthur. Too much squashed into the morning and 5 hours before we arrived. Promptly at 3pm we were herded back on to the bus and headed for Richmond which was another waste of time arriving just after 4pm for a 40 minute stop but to be told everything closes at 4pm. The lolly shop was about all that was open. Last but not least another divert to a lookout on the southern side of the Derwent River, just a carpark really but a nice view all the same. Eventually back to Hobart in peak hour traffic just before 6pm. There was a lot to do in 1 day in my opinion a lot of wasted time which could have been much better spent at Port Arthur. For tourists there is no time built in to eat, everything was on the run, I don't recommend this tour if you want to see and enjoy all of Port Arthur and what it has to offer.

Did you know we operate 3 different active day tours to the Port Arthur Historic Site? • Port Arthur & Tassie Devils • Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula • Port Arthur & Lavender They are all described as fast paced, active day tours, designed to explore the Tasman region including many stops along the way! The tour that you booked is our Port Arthur & Tassie Devils tour day. The overview of the tour description states: “This active, fast-paced tour is ideal for travelers who want to see and do a lot in a single day. There’s something for everyone on this tour, as long as you’re prepared to work those feet. Learn about Tasmanian history at the Port Arthur Historic Site, watch Tasmanian Devils feeding, hike along cliff-tops and to spectacular lookouts, visit Richmond village and much more. Ideal if you're short on time.” A fun, full-on overview of Hobart, Port Arthur, and surrounds The tour description then also goes on to advise that the Waterfall Bay cliff top track is a 2 km walk and takes around 45mins - 1 hour. Followed by Tasman Arch & Devils Kitchen short walks around the rock formations. The visiting time at Port Arthur Historic Site will be around 2.5 hours. This time includes a guided walking tour and the harbour cruise all conducted and operated by the specialist team at Port Arthur. The remaining time is there to explore Port Arthur. We would have happily discussed any of our tours with you, if given the opportunity. If your priority was to maximise your time at Port Arthur Historic Site than we would have recommended the Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula tour – which allows for 4 hours of time at the Port Arthur Historic Site. This tour still includes the Waterfall Bay Clifftop Walk – one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks – and takes in the spectacular views of some of the highest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere! We also visit Richmond Village on this tour. The Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula tour is still described as a busy, action packed day out, for active travellers, looking to see and do as much in their day as possible. If your preference was a simple coach tour to Port Arthur Historic Site and return to Hobart, we would have recommended to you a better suited operator. You also mentioned that many retail stores in Richmond were closing early. Unfortunately, with most of the population of Australia still locked out of Tasmania, many retail and small business operators are still bearing the brunt of the effects of Covid 19 restrictions on their operations. With only a small number of travellers currently in Tasmania, many business operations are affected in some way by the current circumstances. This can result in understaffing, reduced opening hours, additional closed days, as they do their best to survive and try to come out the other of side things. We don’t however, advertise a shopping trip to Richmond village. Richmond is a historic village, with a convict built bridge, a beautiful short walk along the river, historic buildings, convict gaol and churches, all available to see and enjoy as your wander the township. (“ We arrive in the late afternoon into historic Richmond Village. Meander the streets, stop for a coffee, visit the Lolly Shop and walk across Australia’s oldest bridge still in use – a convict built sand-stone bridge, reported to be haunted!"). I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the local Lolly shop, it is full of fantastic, sweet treats! The Richmond Bakery is also open till quite late, for coffee and afternoon tea for the hungry ones. Our tour description on Viator describes all of the key activities in our tour day, and that we aim to see as much as possible in this amazing area of Tasmania. Feel free to get in touch directly with business operators prior to travelling to ensure you are choosing experiences that match your travel style.

Rocky start but a fantastic experience.

The tour operators and our guide were excellent. Unfortunately the booking through Viator was dreadful. Despite having a booking reference , electronic ticket, it was never issued to the tour operator, so they had no record of us in the system and failed to pick us up. After 20 mins we rang the tour operator who told us the above. But the tour operator went above and beyond and returned to collect us- outstanding service.

We are so glad you enjoyed your tour day with us despite the bumpy start! We looked in on the ticket details, and found that the ticket in the Viator system stated: "API - Failed" - this meant the connection didn't go through to our reservation system, despite issuing all the details to you! Luckily we all successfully worked together and achieved a great outcome despite the initial confusion!

We had a great day! An early start meant that we saw so much. We did the 45 min walk and saw spectacular cliff to sights including the devils kitchen ad blow hole. Our guide was David and he was full of interesting information and funny stories. He had a vast knowledge of local and historic knowledge. He was very in tune with our comfort too. Always asking how the sure temp was etc. We were very happy with three tour and would consider going another one with them.

Awesome Experience
We started with a guided tour which was extremely interesting. We found out so much more than we would have if we were just checking it out on our own. We went on the short harbour cruise too which was lovely. I would highly recommend visiting Port Arthur to anyone!

Long but worth every minute
Mar 2020
This excursion is run by a company called Tours Tasmania and they were first class all the way. Yes it is an 11 hour tour so it's a long day, however it was worth it. The guide was great and knowledgeable, they were on time, and the stops were great. The cliff walk was beautiful and not difficult with plenty of places to stop for pictures. The stop at the UnZoo to see the Tasmanian Devil was delightful, and of course Port Arthur itself was very informative and interesting. Would highly recommend this tour and this company.

Great day on the Tasman Peninsula, good tour guide
Feb 2020
We had planned to take this with the 4 hours at Port Arthur option, but decided en route to stop at the Un-Zoo and see wild-life up close, with only 2-1/2 hours at Port Arthur, instead, and were happy we did. (This was a 10 dollars Australian supplement). We hand-fed kangaroos and gullahs, and watched a Tasmanian devil feeding. We did not have as much time for guided tours at Port Arthur as the 4-hour folks, but felt it was enough time to walk around, see the site, read interpretive materials, and take the boat ride. The cliff walk en route was spectacular, and was a reason we chose this tour over some other options. Our tour guide was well-informed and gave good commentary.
