Her stories were fascinating and indeed focussed on the bars and enthusiatic drinkers of Melbourne. We walked by some fabulous illiminated icons of Melbourne and then some down lane ways to enter a few small truly hidden bars.Written 4 March 2025

We visited five incredible hidden bars, each with its own unique charm and top-tier drinks. Simon’s knowledge of the city’s history and his storytelling made the experience even more special. - BostonTraveler790 contributionsFantastic evening food tourWe were looking for a food tour that would take place in the evening so we could make the best use of our limited time in Melbourne (since we had other tours scheduled during the daytime hours) - so that was what first led us to this one - and WOW, are we happy we found it! Hugo was such a knowledgeable and engaging tour guide. He brought us to places we would never have found on our own: restaurants with speakeasy vibes that you wouldn't even know were there from outside the building, and hole-in-the-wall places where we might have been concerned about the quality had we not had a local guide. These ended up being some of the best food we ate during our entire five weeks in Australia! We also enjoyed the tidbits we learned about the city's history through the different neighborhoods we visited. Hugo struck a great balance of offering some personal information but not so much that it made it awkward :-) At the end of the tour, we felt like we had made a new friend. He also left us with a map marked up with his personalized recommendations for us, based on our tastes and interests. We visited some of his picks during our remaining time in Melbourne and his advice was spot on. Can't recommend this experience highly enough!Written 25 January 2025

- 0099mark0 contributionsHugo was a wealth of knowledge...of secret Melbourne bars!We did the Melbourne 'Hidden Laneway Bars' tour with Hugo. What a great tour! We've been in MElbourne for 25 yrs and had no idea of the amount and variety of bars! Each has its own unique character - just choose one to match the evening! Hugo was also a wealth of information on each, and a particularly good guide, with tips on each, as well as on Melbourne city history. Thx Hugo - you made the tour all he more enjoyable!!Written 8 January 2025
- R8852XVseanc0 contributionsGreat walking tour with excellent hidden barsWas struggling to think of something to do with friends coming into town. Decided to book the hidden laneways tour to uncover some new bars that I didnt know about and I was not disappointed. The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable given he was a local. It was a perfect afternoon walking around Melbourne's laneways uncovering some of the best bars I have been (our friends still speak about the bars and they are from NYC... says something about Aussie hospitality). Definitely worth booking, you will have a great afternoonWritten 3 December 2024

Our walking tour with Laura was a complete delight — we couldn’t have imagined a more informative, enjoyable, energetic, guided walk around the city. She made a deliberate effort to connect with everyone individually, learning their names and interests, and catering the tour content accordingly. Her enthusiasm for her city, and for providing its guests with the best possible experience in it, was palpable — and her spirit was infectious. And the free coffee and ending beverage at the historic pub was amazing! We loved our tour and couldn’t recommend it more highly as a way to kick off your exploration of all Melbourne has to offer.

So the first tour of our Melbourne trip and to be honest we didn't leave the best to last! We had the best first! Our guide was Hugo and his knowledge and obvious love for the job should set an example to all that follow in this difficult trade.
He introduced the group to each other and made everyone feel at ease, then proceeded to take us round some wonderful sites in Melbourne, showing us historic, famous and amazing things that make up Melbourne. He was also careful he didn't remain with one person all the time, moving through the group, chatting and answering their questions. We finished up at a wonderful bar for a good meal and a couple of drinks. AN excellent day with some well spent times soaking in Australia's Melbourne.

This tour will give you a quick idea of the city. The duration is neither too short nor too long and sufficiently leaves you wanting to explore more with a better sense of direction. Laura, our guide, was really dynamic and knew how to capture our attention during these 4 hours of tour (it takes a little over 3 hours with all the breaks). Walking is very easy because the town is quite flat, so don't hesitate to book even if you're not a big sporty person. I recommend this tour.

My husband and I really enjoyed the tour, despite the chilly, windy day. We only had a limited time in Melbourne, and this tour was a great way to get to know about the important sights and culture of the city. Hugo was an excellent tour guide, offering a lot of knowledge and excitement for the city, that made the tour very enjoyable. He also took the time to answer our questions and provide personal recommendations for where to go next that were very helpful. I highly recommend this tour as a way to get to know the city, and to find some hidden places and art you may otherwise never discover! Definitely recommend!

Melbourne is an incredible city with so much to offer it's impossible to gain an appreciation of it without a local showing you around. Hugo was one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining tour guides I'd ever had. Everyone was gripped by his story telling abilities and the way he explained the history and current climate of Melbourne.
You'd be doing a disservice not going on this tour as a visitor.

I took the Complete Melbourne Walking Tour on Tuesday 17th of December. As a first time visitor to the city I found this tour a great way to get to know the city centre area of Melbourne as well as the historical background to the city and country. Our guide Laura was very knowledgeable and witty as well as being very passionate about her home city. I enjoyed the beer at the end as it gave me a chance to have a chat to some of the others who completed the walk. I would highly recommend this tour.

Our guide, Laura, was excellent, she was a pure delight in how she presented the history of Melbourne.
Laura was very enthusiastic while she described Melbournes history, and gave us ample time to rest when we needed, made sure we had some nourishment along the way.
Her whole heart is in her job. You are very fortunate to have her on your team!

This tour totally delivered! My group’s guide, Ian, was awesome! He was so knowledgeable about the city, its history, and gave us recs along the way for good restaurants and other activities! It was great to hear his passionate love for Melbourne and by the end, I felt like I could really orient myself around the city much better and fell in love with it too. Definitely excited to revisit some of the hot spots from the tour!
Lastly, I also loved that it was a small group tour. We all got to know each other and even stayed an extra hour after the tour chatting at the bar/restaurant where the tour ended!

Ian’s passion for Melbourne is infectious. Our time with him passed all too quickly as he intertwined fascinating stories of the city’s history with the present day. We were introduced to Melbourne Magic to kick start the day, the lovely Miss Chloe, wonderful architecture, the laneways and historic arcades, and the ‘heroic’ Ned Kelly. Ian gently and quietly kept us on schedule without us feeling hurried along at any time. He clearly loves his city and it was a honour to spend the morning with him. mel

What time is walking tour?
How far is shipnto where we need to meet?

And what is cost
Written 12 December 2019
walking tour leaves every half hour. Starts at historic library (not sure how far from harbor). Tour is free and you can tip if desired.

Why is trip advisor quoting $85.80 for 2 people when this is advertised as a ‘free’ walking tour with a voluntary charge?
Written 16 November 2019
We saw the tour online. I'm sure it was advertised as a free walking tour, taking approximately 3 hours. Our guide asked for a payment based on how much we thought the tour was worth, and how well the guide conducted the tour. From memory we gave $40.

Hi. Sorry if it is in front o fme - but what time do the tours depart?
Written 25 September 2019
I did the 11am tour, meet at Gordon Reserve. I think they also do a 3pm tour in the afternoon

I am a little confused, I was planning on booking this walking tour and the cost is $24 per person, but on other posts it says it is a free tour, with tips at the end. I am happy to pay the fee, but which is correct?
Written 10 September 2019
Payment is optional but guarantees a spot if lots show up for the tour. A coffee is included as well as a gratuity.
We we so impressed with our guide that we tipped even though we paid for the tour.

Written 19 July 2019
If this is a “free” tour then how come TripAdvisor is charging me to book it? Can I not just show up and join like other free city tours?
Written 31 March 2019
Hi everyone - John from Walks 101 here (we run the Free Melbourne Tour).
The $3 booking fee isn't required, but guarantees your spot on the tour.
The challenge with free walking tours is that we're never sure how many will arrive. On very busy days, we occasionally need to turn folks due when we haven't scheduled enough guides.
Booking with the reservation fee helps us know that you will show up, and as a result we will ensure that you will go on the tour you booked.
You're welcome to arrive without a booking, but the $3 booking fee is the most secure way to go.
Written 2 April 2019
How is the pace of the walking? I walk with a cane and can be a little on the slow side.
