What to expect
Sea kayak to Rangitoto Island, the largest and youngest of Aucklands volcanoes and the landmark of the Auckland region, while the sun is slowly setting over Auckland and the Waitakere Ranges.  Complimentary pick up and drop off from central Auckland upon request (Auckland Ferry Building) After your safety briefing and paddling instruction you will kayak across the Waitemata harbour, meaning 'sparkling waters', where you may see wildlife such as Little Blue Penguins and Cooks Petrels. We pull our kayaks up to Rangitoto wharf before embarking on a one-hour explorative, fun and informative trek to the summit, viewing the spectacular sites and learning all about the history of the region. Upon reaching the top you will be treated to the finest 360 degree views that the Auckland region has to offer.  At the return to the water’s edge, a healthy Kiwi-style BBQ dinner will be awaiting you. With your guide, you will paddle back in the dark watching the city lights sparkle like stars.  Our guides are very experienced and skilled sea kayakers with a personal commitment and passion for conservation and kayaking. Their knowledge of the area, understanding of the weather systems and catering abilities will ensure your trip is both enjoyable and safe.

Big shout out to our guide Tom for an amazing and uniqure experience on our trip to Rangitoto. Our group of 5 women were not experienced kayakers but he gave us the confidence, support and reassurance to have a fun time. Dietary needs were catered for with our bbq dinner and then brownies were bought out as dessert when we reached the summit -a nice touch.Sunset was gorgeous, weather was perfect and coming home in the dark with virtually just us on the water was incredibly calming and uplifting Would highly reccommend this trip. Well done Tomv

Fantastic trip
Jan 2021
We are inexperienced paddlers but fit and keen for adventure. We had a marvellous trip, starting in full sunshine at St. Helliers Beach where we were given a thorough briefing and fully geared up. We had a great dinner on the jetty that was prepared by Tom and then had time on the island to watch the sun go down over the city before paddling back. As we came back the full moon appeared over the island and we could see the Harbour Bridge and city all lit up. Highly recommended.

Great work by Guides!
Dec 2020
This was my second sunset paddle - wanted to bring husband along this time. Equally impressed by friendly guides, well-managed, nice food and of course Rangitoto is a very special place to visit especially after the day crowds have gone home. Special shout out for our trip as sea and wind were quite challenging and one boat had a capsize close to Rangi. The guides managed this extremely well, making sure the rest of us were in a position to make shelter safely and amazingly quickly had the swimmers back in their boat and towed ashore for dry clothes and a cup of tea. Really well done and confidence-inspiring.

Incredible!
We had the most incredible sunset kayak to Rangitoto. The kayak over was not too hard, lovely and warm and we were rewarded with a gorgeous BBQ. The hike up to the Rangitoto summit was so peaceful, we felt to privileged to be there after everyone had gone home. We were treated to the most beautiful sunset over Auckland. The paddle home was calm and warm and we saw bioluminescent algae in the water lighting up the bottom of the boats and everything we touched went blue! Seeing the city from the sea and kayaking back in the dark was very special. The trip was high above our expectations - would highly recommend!

Unforgettable experience
Mar 2020
We were originally trying to book the day trip to Motukorea Island for the day of, but accidentally signed up for the next day instead. When we panickedly called to amend our mistake they told us that the Motukorea trip for that day was already full up but offered us a free upgrade to the Rangitoto Sunset trip instead, which we gratefully accepted.

This was an amazing experience, we were driven from downtown Auckland to the harbour, given a quick kayaking and safety lesson, and then paddled across the bay to the island. A quick, freshly-cooked dinner on the island, and then we hiked up the mountain to watch the sunset from the peak. Refreshments at the top, and then hiked back down and kayaked back to the beach, with a spectacular view of the downtown skyline at night from on the water. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us many interesting insights into the island, its history and geology and flora.

This was a very tightly planned trip and was pulled off spectacularly. Highly recommended if you like to see places under your own horsepower as much as possible.

Magical, worth every penny!
Feb 2020
If you're travelling on a budget this might seem a little steep, however, transport from downtown is provided as well as dinner and treats, and a first class guide (Tom) that will take care of you! I have basic kayak experience and was a little nervous, but once we got going I felt more confident. It was definitely not a short trip so make sure you're feeling energetic and fit! The hike is also steep! But this is a great experience because the island is quiet at the end of the day, you have it all to yourself, it's completely tranquil out there. The sunset and the kayak back in the dark was so magical and really felt like a once in a lifetime experience. I am just so thankful I went for this tour. Thanks for taking us, Tom!

Heather, thank you for taking the time on reviewing lour Sunset tour to Rangitoto. We really appreciate it. The last ferry back to the city from the island is at 4 pm and with no public accommodation on the island it is great to have very few other people on the island. Also thank you for the positive review on Tom. He is a very well traveled and loves been back in his home town of Auckland and show of his playground to other Aucklander's and travelers alike. Thanks again for your review.

Laura was our guide and I really appreciate her attention to safety. Unfortunately, we were not able make our trip to Rangitoto because the wind really picked up preventing safe crossing. We tried to divert to Brown island but it too was too windy to reach. So we had to settle for a shore landing and picnic there without being able to do the hike, sunset trek up the island, and night return. We ended up making it back to base before sunset. Looking back that was probably a wise decision considering we had to help another kayaker not in our group recover from a capsize and rescue on our return. We were told we would receive a partial refund but have not heard yet when or what that might be. It has only been a week since our trip and hopefully we will hear something soon. Otherwise it was a challenging but good trip.

Hey Mark and Linda. Great to hear that you had a good trip and felt it was safe at all times. It is the nature of outdoor activities that the conditions are different to what is forecast and safety is always the priority. As stated in our email to you, we advised your booking agent, Viator, the day after the tour that a partial refund was required and they informed us this had taken place. This was emailed to the address you placed in your booking. Thanks again for paddling with us and email us if you have any further questions
