- kadeburgh0 contributionsA day of funWe were surrounded by international travellers all eager to have a fun day on the water. Our captain Luke and Carmen set the mood with their humour and interesting facts about the area. We could participate in sailing or relax on the bean bags. I chose bean bags. We headed to an island to snorkel, swim, walk or paddle board. The day flew. Lots of chuckles and interesting conversations. Thank youWritten 13 March 2025
- Notes2Home0 contributionsAn exceptional day out led by down-to-earth Kiwis who genuinely care about the Bay of IslandsI try to say “the best I’ve ever done” as little as possible. After all, how can everything be the best? But after five years travelling New Zealand top to bottom, I can say, without a doubt, that Barefoot Sailing Adventures is the best tour I have ever taken. We spent last Saturday exploring the Bay of Islands with Barefoot Sailing. The tour started at 9:45 am and Luke ferried everyone from shore to the boat so we didn’t get wet (5 stars for that alone!). He gave us a safety briefing, and it was clear from the get-go that he knew more about the Bay of Islands than anyone I’d ever met. As we sailed from Paihia toward Moturoa Island, Luke shared information about the area, its wildlife, and Barefoot Sailing’s commitment to sustainability. We learnt about Project Island Song, a conservation effort to restore wildlife to the islands - they donate a portion of each Island Hopper Day ticket to the project! One of the things that surprised me the most was the time and effort Luke put into getting to know us. Within the first hour he knew everyone's names (there were 16 of us!), where we were from and little details about our lives. He wandered around the boat, making a point of sitting down, chatting with everyone, and making sure they had everything they needed to have the best experience possible. We anchored up at Moturoa at midday and spent the afternoon swimming, snorkeling and paddleboarding. There was even time to do a short walk Luke recommended which took us across the island to a beautiful secluded bay. Meeting Carmen was another highlight of my day. She waved us off to shore with our packed lunches (nice touch!) and spent hours talking to each of the guests, sharing stories from her life and travels. She’s also “the hostess with the mostess”, bringing round tea, coffee, Milo and biscuits for morning tea and a selection of cold drinks in the afternoon. She is an asset to the Barefoot Sailing crew and by the end of our day, Carmen and Luke had started to feel more like friends than tour guides. If you’re considering an island tour while you’re in the Bay of Islands, PLEASE let it be this one. It’s so clear that Barefoot Sailing is a down-to-earth, Kiwi-owned business run by people who genuinely care about the area. Our cruise was outstanding from start to finish. Their hospitality, humour and passion for their work made the whole day magical and an experience I’ll remember forever. I’ll rave about it to anyone who will listen!Written 10 March 2025
- 183gwenr0 contributionsSundowner Cruise with Barefoot SailingHad a lovely time on the 2 hour Sundowner cruise at Paihia. Not quite what we planned as we had to get a tender to the catamaran - and my elderly friend was absolutely terrified getting on and off. Oir skipper, Luke, was incredibly kind and reassuring and, once on the boat, she relaxed and really enjoyed herself - as did I. Being under sail was lovely and the evening swim was delightful.Written 20 February 2025
- Tpauburn0 contributionsEvening Island Sail, and views, along with some historical info, of the Bay Of Island, via CatamaranReally nice and calming, aspect to the area. The Catamaran was wonderful. And I will say the same thing, as previous. To begin Luke ( owner, pilot, dad to a cute girl) was real cool. He learns ur name , and then demands u hand over ur shoes. Now it is time for a plug, on his very nice Female companion. She assisted me from the booking to helping me park my car correctly, while she stood on the boat. The beautiful, idea about this, was we got a background discussion of Luke's passion in his sailing and dang proud of his Catamaran, and knowledge about the upkeep. It was pretty neat as I have never been in the Pacific for a dip. OH, lets not forget the communicative, group. that we had. Very nice group. Had fun, and the weather was wonderful.Written 14 February 2025

The Skipper was great, chatty and fun and great with the kids as well as being really informative, but also giving us time to relax and enjoy the peaceful scenery too. Great packed lunch and hot drinks served too. One of the kids said it was the best packed lunch ever! We would definitely recommend the Lagoon Bay cruise to anyone.Written 1 February 2025

- David F0 contributionsA lovely experience sailing in the Bay of IslandsWe had a great trip on Luke's catamaran, Moonwalker, sailing out from Paihia to one of the islands in the bay with just a small party of 5 other people. Luke was very attentive to his passengers, checking frequently that we were all ok, especially anyone who had a tendency to sea-sickness, but everyone was fine even though it got a little bouncy once or twice. He also gave out some info about the bay and the boat that was very interesting. The lunch pack provided was really good too.Written 23 December 2024
- LML028960 contributionsA fun but windy dayWe had a wonderful day sailing in the Bay of Islands out to the bird sanctuary island. Mid-spring is windy and cool, but ponchos and warm drinks sustained us for a great day. Simple but satisfactory lunch was served on reaching the island. - Philip S0 contributionsFun and RelaxingThis was such a fun trip. The captain, Sarah, was so funny and had so many great stories, and the crew person, Michelle, was so helpful and informative. The trip was so relaxing, and the scenery was beautiful. We spent two hours on the island of Moturua, which gave people the opportunity to snorkel, hike, paddle board, or just relax on the beach. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Bay of Islands.Written 17 March 2024

We were greeted on the beach by Luke at 9:30 in the morning and returned at 4:30 having enjoyed a magical day around the Bay of Islands😀 Sitting in a bean bag in the sun whilst sailing at around 6 knots to a deserted cove and beach for lunch! Swimming, Padel boarding and a hour walk before returning. Highly recommended day.
Luke is a perfect skipper sharing enough local knowledge to make it interesting without disturbing the tranquility sailing.

Had a great time Sailing w/Barefoot Sailing Company. I was a little concerned as the weather was off and on windy & rainy around the days before and after but all was great! The Skipper navigated the weather forecast just fine and never felt like “we shouldn’t have gone out”—I’m so glad we did! Excellent communication leading up to the tour and everything was just as said. Comfy Bean-Bag chairs, with coffee brought to you, Sailed to a beautiful Island, I opted to hike to a beach and have my picnic lunch (which was yummy). Others who stayed back and snorkeled said it was great seeing rays and lots of fish. They were from CA so knew what they were talking about. It was a great day and would highly recommend!

What a fun experience! My first time sailing and was a bit nervous, but that didn't last long! Luke was an excellent host - very informative, great sense of humor, definitely makes everyone feel comfortable and at ease, obviously knows what he's doing on the water and would recommend sailing with him in a heartbeat! Did I mention fun...awesome trip!

As with the other five star reviews, you can’t go wrong. The skipper Sean and his first mate Kate were absolutely fantastic. Had a lot of information about the history, birds, penguins, the islands, tides sailing, you name it!
Was a peaceful two hour sale/motor adventure, two hour island destination, which is two hours. And pretty much a full sale all the way back. Fantastic to see what the wind can do.
Absolute would recommend, great value as well. For less than 100 American dollars, divided by six hours you can’t get that kind of fun. Thank you so much Sean and Kate, and barefoot!

We went on the Island Hopper Day Cruise. Our first date got rained out (typhooned out, really) but they were able to accommodate us on the next day’s sailing so we still got to go. Communication on rescheduling was fast and easy and we had the option of a refund if the new date didn't work, but happily for us it did.
The boat was easy to find on Paihia Beach. We boarded the boat, had a brief safety briefing and then set off on a sail. We had warm coffee or tea on our sail out which was great for the cool morning. The crew regularly reminded us to reapply sunscreen, for good reason – we reapplied, but missed a few spots which got rather burnt by the end of the day. The NZ sun is not messing around.
We got a bit of an intro to the wildlife sanctuary and it's birds as we circled around and then pulled in to the harbor. We were handed delicious bagged lunches from Countdown that had plenty of food (sandwich, apple, chips, dessert). Mrs. Cuddles took the opportunity to try paddleboarding and the crew was great at teaching her how to start out. Snorkeling was also available but it was a bit chilly so no one from our group was brave enough to try it. We hiked on the island and did see the promised birds as well as some great views. You could easily spend more time there.
We then had a return sail complete with the option for beer or an L&P. The sun was shining, there was a nice breeze, and it was a great day for sailing from beginning to end.
This is a great tour with a friendly crew, gorgeous scenery and nice extra touches from beginning to end. Highly recommended if you get the chance.

Luke and Nero created a spectacular experience sailing the Bay of Islands. Captain Luke took the time to converse with everyone on the boat (capped at 12 guest - which was ideal) as well as share his knowledge of the area and folklore. We started the sail with Nero's legendary coffee and a biscuit, and then moved onto a delicious box lunch picnic once we landed on the island. We maximized the experience and snorkeled, swam, and paddleboarded. It is my definition of a perfect day. Thanks Team Barefoot! We hope to be back again.

Had a fantastic day out with Luke and Michelle on the catamaran. Smooth conditions and with plentiful food for lunch, morning coffee and cool drinks on the way home. Luke was informative and entertaining and Michelle was equally friendly and great for paddleboard instruction. They both made sure to talk to everyone on the boat and make them feel welcome. With only 17 aboard it was so much better than some of the crowded motor cruises we saw.
We stopped at an island in the bay for lunch and had the opportunity to snorkel, paddleboard and swim. It was ideal. Anybody that wanted to could take the helm and everything was done in a friendly and relaxed manner. Luke is keen to sail rather than motor at every opportunity which adds to the experience and even with little wind we had the sails up for most of the way.
Would thoroughly recommend this trip.

First off, Captain Luke was excellent. Informative, welcoming, professional, and an interesting human, too. 6 hours flew by even though the light winds meant more under the engine than sail. As we brought our own snorkelling gear, we could go to another bay for snorkelling, which was ok. The rest of the guests stayed and saw 2 fish. We saw loads, but like Luke says, it's not the great barrier reef, so dont expect lots of pretty fish. However, we did see a juvenile hammerhead. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone

Such a lovely relaxing day with Luke and Niro. We had seen other excellent reviews so chose this cruise and weren't disappointed. Luke is a friendly and knowledgeable skipper and made sure he spoke to us all individually making us feel at ease and welcome. Great sail to Moturua where we could snorkel, swim and paddle board. There were also a couple of trails over the island to follow to spot the bird life. This is what we did taking our delicious picnic with us. We were the only people on the beach there and had another superb swim.
Leisurely sail back feeling chilled and relaxed.
Such an excellent trip - thank you Luke and Niro.

This was a fabulous day. We had two little kids with us, one a toddler, and Luke was so good with them - patiently letting them sail the boat, and giving them a lovely experience. Comfy beanbags to sit on, great service and kindness. We all loved it, and so would anyone. Strongly recommended for a really great day out. We also loved that they contribute to the island's regeneration, and are careful with their boat around dolphins.

Hi, we are on the Princess cruise arriving at Paihia, Waitangi Wharf on 2/15/24 from 7am-5pm. Your trip leaves at 10am returning 4pm. Can we count on returning by 4pm or is there an earlier tour? A 9am tour would be more comfortable to ensure returning on time for ship departure to Sydney.
