What to expect
After hotel pickup in Rotorua, you’re transferred to the kayaking headquarters for a safety briefing and paddle instructions provided by an experienced guide. From the launch site at nearby Lake Rotoiti, don a life jacket and climb into your kayak to paddle at a leisurely pace across the picturesque lake. Follow your guide past holiday homes that sprinkle the lakeshore, and learn about regional history, Maori legends, and New Zealand's native flora. About halfway into your kayak excursion, arrive at natural hot springs where you can soak and swim in the pools fed by Lak Rotoiti's thermal waters. At the hot pools, dig into a barbecue picnic that may include steak, gourmet sausages, a choice of salads and dessert. After dinner, paddle to several caves that can only be reached by boat. Be mesmerized by the light of glowworms illuminating cavern walls, then continue to a second cave inhabited by koura—small freshwater crayfish. Marvel at the sunset reflected on the water and, as evening turns to dusk, follow your guide back to the boat launch. Back at the base, you can change into dry clothing before being transported back to your Rotorua hotel.

Hot Springs and Glow Worms for the Win!!!
Jan 2021 • Couples
We enjoyed the whole adventure! The Hot Springs were amazing you really can't find a better place to have a soak! There are no words for the glow worms, they simply are, fantastic weird little creatures!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the trip. Being able to sit in a hot pool right on the lake edge and then paddle at sunset to see glowworms certainly makes you appreciate the amazing country we live in.

Awesome, fun and safe experience
We joined Justin on this trip with my parents (in their 70’s), and my two children (10&12). It was a fabulous afternoon and evening experience, and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The experience itself was varied and fun, the dinner was yummy and we always felt safe and well looked after. It’s a late night (we got home at 11pm) but so much fun, my kids and parents were buzzing. Would definitely recommend.

Thank you for your awesome review. The exact finish time will vary throughout the season as the glowworms do not come out in full force until dusk.

Great evening on the lake; the hot pools are a wonderful spot. Ollie our guide was a greatt chef and cooked a lovely BBQ dinner with a few drinks . Glow worm cave was amazing. Ollie is an awesome cruisey knowledgable guide that made our evening so much fun. Would highly reccomend this adventure. After a bit of mucking around with our booking this was well worth the wait!! 5/5 Stars Ollie.

No1 thing to do in Rotorua
Apr 2019 • Couples
We absolutely loved this tour, was the highlight of our week away in Rotorua. Rachel our guide was awesome friendly and knowledgeable. Your helper was great too and will be even better once she has more experience with interacting with people. Lake Rotoiti is truly an amazing piece of NZ to see. loved our wee BBQ dinner provided. Kayaking over to the Caves after sunset to see glow worms was awesome but most of all kayaking back to base in the dark was pretty neat. Thanks waterrats for a great experience.

Truly lovey day
This is a great thing to do in Rotorua. The lake is magical - mostly only accessible by boat. Rachel the guide was very friendly and knew a lot about the region. The trip includes a dip in the hot springs and a bbq dinner. Then a trip back via a glow worm cave and paddling in the dark. I even got dropped off at my Airbnb.

Feb 2019 • Family
We nearly pulled out of the trip as teenagers weren't keen when we heard the wind was getting up and it would be choppy and take longer to kayak. But thankfully we persevered as the equipment was excellent making the kayaking really enjoyable. The pools were fabulous with room for all. Great dinner. Adam was a great guide and a terrific ambassador for NZ, his love for the place obvious. An amazing sunset and singing in the cave to encourage glow worms to light up was super cool. This trip was the highlight of everything we did in Rotorua. The Argentinian we brought with us absolutely loved her day. Thanks

Awesome tour
Dec 2018
Personally I would give this 5 stars but we were with a large group, some of which had little kayak experience. For them it was a bit of a struggle making it across the lake with some wind across their bow. Really just needed to know how many 2 person kayaks were needed and that would have solved the problem. Food was very good and the glowworm cave was very cool. Keep in mind it's a long day, but I loved it.

Truly amazing experience
Jan 2019 • Family
This was one of our biggest highlights for our New Zealand trip, I highly recommend this tour for something different and definitely unforgettable. Our guide was lovely, funny and highly knowledgeable on New Zealand and our surrounds, the kayak over was so lovely and gave a completely different perspective of the natural beauty around us. Relaxing in the Hot Springs while we waited for our dinner was so nice and the BBQ dinner itself was absolutely delicious and great value. They were also highly accomodating for our vegan and vegetarian dietaries and organised amazing food. The glowworm caves were so breathtakingly beautiful, can't stress how good value and well organised this experience was!

Better LOVE Kayaking
Dec 2018 • Friends
This was much more of a workout than expected. I'm not an avid kayaker and found this pretty exhausting paddling across a windy, choppy lake. But the sulphur pools were a nice respite for sore muscles and the BBQ very good. The row back was better, given the lake got calmer, and we were treated to a spectacular sunset and rising full moon. (Glowworm caves were cool too but we'd seen them on a previous tour.) We got back well after dark (don't scrimp on the bug spray) - last to arrive even with the guide helping tow us in (#shame). Fun and scenic and be prepared to work for your meal!

The paddling time for this trip is around 45 minutes to an hour each way If conditions are forecast to be windy we will discuss with clients beforehand what is involved and give them the option to cancel if they wish.

Amazing experience
Jan 2018 • Family
This was one of our top activities on our trip to New Zealand. It helped that we had the perfect weather.

My husband and I and our two teenage boys (13 and 16) joined Andrew and 4 other people on the kayaking trip. Double and single kayaks were available, so younger children can double-up with a parent. The trips to and from the hot pools were magical. Especially the trip back, as the sun set and the scenery was just amazing. The kayaking is good exercise, but not too strenuous.

The hot pools location can only be accessed by boats, so the number of people is limited, although other people were there as well. There are a number of pools with varying temperatures and lots of people also went swimming in the lake. The kids loved that. We spent a few hours there and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Barbeque provided was great and enough food for everyone. Andrew was a great host.

The glowworms on the way back were an added bonus. Would highly recommend.

My one suggestion would be bring along some insect repellent. There are a few sandflies when the sun sets. Nothing that should put you off, but the insect repellent would have avoided the couple of bites I did get.

Thanks for your awesome review. We do have insect repellent available for customers to use. I have reminded the guides to tell customers it is their if they need it.
