Overview
Journey to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth on a morning or afternoon half-day Lord of the Rings tour from Wellington. Your guide takes you through New Zealand’s scenic countryside to key LOTR-related locations such as Weta Workshop and the Embassy Theatre—where several LOTR films premiered. Hear insider information about the productions on a tour that is informative and entertaining for LOTR fans and newcomers alike.
What to Expect

After hotel pickup in Wellington, head to the Courtenay Quarter and stop at the Embassy Theatre, where several Lord of the Rings films premiered. Continue to Mount Victoria for views over Wellington and the harbor, then drive to the Green Belt, where you may recognize settings for Middle-earth scenes such as “Race to the Ferry” and “Shortcut to Mushrooms.”

Next up, take a guided tour of Weta Workshop, located in the center of Wellington’s movie industry (aka Wellywood). Explore the production facilities at the Weta Cave, where crews created the extraordinary props and makeup for LOTR and other films, including The Hobbit, District 9, and Avatar. Learn more about filmmaking here at the Windows into Workshop exhibition, and watch a short film about digital special effects.

Enjoy some free time in the studio’s mini-museum and souvenir shop before your tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel.

Most Fun Tour Ever - #Fattybombur, aka Kent Lambert!!!

To tour the environment/settings for the Lord of the Rings movie in itself was fun, but to have someone who was a part of the entire Peter Jackson NZ movie explosion, including being in the movies, well, that's another thing entirely. Now add in that...More

Hi Sanjo, Evidently you enjoyed your day with Kent! He certainly is a character and we're very lucky to have someone who worked so extensively on the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies as part of our team. His physical appearance does immediately...More

The only regret is that our ship's schedule didn't allow us to do the full day tour. Well done to the admin that spotted this before we left. Our tour guide was a real character himself - Ray of Rivendell. Full of information, knowledge and...More

Hi Anne, It is always a shame when cruise ship times mean you can't join us all day, but I guess it's just a convenient excuse to come back! Ray is indeed a character and enjoys telling stories as much as you enjoyed hearing them!...More
