What to expect
  • Discover New Zealand’s natural history on a nighttime visit to Zealandia, an eco-restoration facility just 10 minutes from downtown Wellington. Find your way there for a guided tour that includes Zealandia: The Exhibition and Sanctuary Valley. Get a firsthand look at prehistoric beasts and other endemic native animals that once roamed the islands. At the state-of-the-art exhibit, you can interact with lifelike models of the now-extinct moa — giant flightless birds — and a fearsome predator: the Haast’s eagle. After learning about these long-lost giants of the bird world, be riveted by a light and sound show that takes you through at least 1,000 years of change. Then walk through a predator-proof fence into the Sanctuary Valley, listening for birdsong in the 550-acre (225-hectare) eco-sanctuary. Follow your guide in search of nocturnal creatures such as the kaka, weta, tuatara and the elusive kiwi as you make your way by flashlight.

morepork and kiwi!!
Jul 2021
A crisp winter evening saw the tour start at the very reasonable time of 4:45 pm. Exceptionally knowledgeable guide, and John the volunteer bird spotter did a fabulous job. Highlights of the tour were a morepork calling in a tree and a kiwi in the middle of the track (no peeking around branches to see this specimen of NZ culture).

The evening ended with a hot cuppa, and the start time mean there was enough time to get into town and have dinner.

Highly recommended, and the price of entry includes a years membership.

A must do’
Jan 2021 • Family
Zealandia is a fabulous place to see New Zealand native animals Tonight I did my first “Zealandia at Night“ tour. It was absolutely fabulous! Allison was our guide. (Steve was a volunteer there to help find animals.) We saw several Tuatara. We saw and heard many types of Birds including the tiny spotted kiwi bird. We even saw Morepork feeding their young. It’s a small group, maximum guests is 12. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth the money. I suggest you do it!

Excellent Experience
Jan 2020
Zealandia is one of my favourite places in New Zealand. Over the last year or so, I've been there about once a fortnight. As such, I had high hopes for this night tour...

and I wasn't disappointed!

After arriving, we hung about for 10 minutes, before entering the sanctuary. I'll be honest, the beginning was pretty boring. The tour guide tried to explain ever single sign, and point out EVERY individual bird.

Once we got into the forest, things got much better. We were surrounded by the call of the Kiwi, and constant rustling in the undergrowth. Then, just as I thought we wouldn't see anything, a single Little Spotted Kiwi stepped out into an opening in the trees. The Kiwi stayed with us for about 30 seconds, and was fascinating to watch.

After seeing the Kiwi, we watched a massive Eel chomping on a snack (much better than it sounds), and headed home.

For any bird lovers in the area, I would definitely recommend coming on this night tour (as well as a visit to Zealandia in the daytime).

As a final word of advice, it gets quite cold, so be sure to bring some gloves and a scarf!

We did see a Kiwi
Feb 2020
Its quite an experience going on a twilight walk in a quiet environment such as this looking for a rare bird and seeing other local wildlife at this time. We had a very experienced local kiwi guide (ex Suffolk albeit a long time ago) who gave us a good introduction to what Zeelandia is all about before we started the walk. We did see a kiwi fairly close up although it was very brief because they are shy creatures and it dashed away. It's not everyone's cup of tea but we enjoyed the experience it's not a difficult walk and good walking shoes are adequate.

MUST DO
Feb 2020
This is a lovely rather leisurely walk around the sanctuary which is a gem. Our guide was very knowledgable and interesting and very dedicated to preserving the unique wildlife which has been threatened by predators introduced to NZ.

I really wanted to see a kiwi. Using info red "torches" we heard the scratching sound and just at the end of the tour, VOILA! There was it was.
The gift store has some lovely items and they serve a the made from local plants at the end. The night tours have limited capacity, so book early.

Magical!
Feb 2020
This eco-sanctuary is an abandoned water system for the city. I took the night tour which was just magical...though I'm sure it would have been interesting in the daytime. NZ has a very different flora and fauna than the rest of the world. and the guides were great pointing these out. Here we were in the heart of the city with all of these nature sounds in one ear and in the other, a Queen concert blasting from the city center. Really cool. And we saw Kiwi's...the illusive native "bird" - it doesn't fly that is the country's mascot.

Going back to nature!
Feb 2020
What an outstanding way to observe indigenous and other wildlife close up! Our guide, Juliet, provided a very informed commentary on the various birds, insects, fish and other aspects of life at Zealandia. This Reserve is phenomenal. Towards the end of our tour, we were very fortunate to observe a Kiwi in its natural habitat for several minutes. That was really cool.....

Kiwis, Takahe, Glowworms and more
What can we say, except “Wow!” Our guide, Gabriel, and spotter Lyn did us proud! We were each equipped with a red torch and an ear piece so Gabriel could talk to us without raising his voice.

Starting off at dusk, we admired Kaka, fantails and shag by daylight before being accosted by the Takahe that clearly anticipated Gabriel having some treats for them.

As the night got darker, we listened to the sounds and used our torches to spot Weta (big crickets), Tuatara (lizard-like dinosaurs) and long finned eels... and Glowworms. The Glowworms are the same as those at Waitomo. We have been to Waitomo and it’s magical, but if you’re on a budget then come here and get more in one trip!

And then the magic happened. Little Spotted Kiwi! The first found by Lyn was scratching away next to us for a good ten minutes and the second, spotted by Gabriel, wasn’t around as long but was no less special.

On top of all this, your ticket gives you admission by daylight next day. Brilliant trip, well worth the money.

Eco tourism done right
Feb 2020 • Couples
We booked the night tour to give us the possibility of seeing the native kiwi bird. Our booking for the night tour gave us an extra entrance to the reserve the morning before or the day after our tour. Which for us was brilliant, it allowed us to make the most of the reserve and get a reasonable walk in and to see many different birds in the day time as well as the notcturnal ones when we came back again at dusk. seeing a kiwi on the night walk is not guaranteed, but we were incredibly lucky and saw three in different areas of the reserve as well as hearing a few others to. Zealandia really is THE place to see the birds of new Zealand, well worth the money. The organisation is not for profit, the money from entrance tickets etc goes back into maintaining the reserves predator free status and helps to fund programs that are working to increase the numbers of the at risk birds such as the kiwi and the takahē this is eco tourism done right.

One in a life time experience!!!
Jan 2020 • Friends
Thank you so much Katy and Belynda! You’ve made the tour unique! We were so lucky tonight and so not only one kiwi but 5!!!! We also had the rare chance of seeing to little ruru chicks, which was on my personal bucket list! But this trip didn’t end here - we saw the Kāruhiruhi (pied shag), the Takahē, the Tuna Kuwharuwharu (longfin eel), the Pepektua (maud Island frog), many Tuatara, beautiful Pūrātoke (glow worms) and the Wellington tree wēta. I've learned so much about these wonderful animals! And so should you by coming to Zealandia and booking a night tour. It’s 100% worth it.
