Larnach’s Delight
May 2021 • Family
The weather was not favourable - a real wet and misty Scottish day! Not the best for viewing the beautiful gardens but the castle was fabulous. We had afternoon tea in the ballroom cafe with the fires going which was magical! The gift shop was beautifully set out and well stocked with lovely gifts - could have been in a shop in last century Scotland - loved it! Such a pretty drive and so close to the city centre

Fantastic commentary on the tour, which really bought the property to life. A fascinating yet sad story of one of our founding families. Lovely gardens to stroll through.

Great restoration with a soap opera history - brilliant!
Apr 2021
The whole place is amazing. The history is almost like a soap opera with all the twists and turns - but unlike soap operas it's very entertaining. Loved the restoration that has been done - Constance's boudoir was a laugh a minute - what a bad girl she was! The turret was an interesting climb - best not to meet somebody on way up or down - there's no room to pass. The views are great. The gardens were past their best when we went (getting on towards winter) but very well maintained and well worth a stroll around regardless. There's always a view of something as well. Highlights were the boudoir, the baths (marble bath weighing a ton for the kids - ridiculous!), and some of the artifacts. But especially the history of the place and people - that's worth checking out. Highly recommend

Step back in time
Apr 2021 • Family
If you love beautiful gardens and a nostalgic trip back to the early 1800's then this is for you. Our family loved every minute of being there and 4 1/2 hours flew by. Our 2 girls (8 & 10) particularly enjoyed the hunt for clues throughout nothing the garden and castle. Highly recommend.

Amazing place to visit! A Must!
Apr 2021
We went to the Larnach Castle and Gardens and also the High Tea. High Tea was so excellent. Beautiful food. We would love to go back there again with our friends.

The Castle is so beautiful and it reminded me of UK and Scotland. It is worth a visit. Thank you for keeping up with the restoration work. Must visit it again one day with friends.

Incredible restoration by a private family
Mar 2021 • Couples
The restoration of the castle is amazing. I visited 25 years ago and the work that has been done in that time is phenomenal. The family should be so proud, so much hard work and sacrifice. I loved it.

Wonderful castle, stunning gardens
Mar 2021
Spent a wonderful few hours touring the castle and the beautiful and extensive grounds and recommend that you spend the extra to do both activities. The current owners are doing a great job of renovating the castle and the story boards and short introductory film provide a fascinating history of this landmark building. The views from the tower are stunning and we were lucky to have perfect weather for it.

Stunning Views
Jan 2021
We had a lovely few hours at Larnach Castle. We went around 10 in the morning to avoid too many people visiting the place.

We especially liked touring the grounds because of the stunning views of the Otago Peninsula. The scenery was breathtaking.

The stairs going up the tower fits only one person. It's very narrow and if you're claustrophobic you might not want to go up the tower.

Well worth a visit.
Mar 2020
Widely billed at ‘New Zealand’s only Castle’, this is really more of a stately home, originally built in the style of a castle by William Larnach. We visited as part of our itinerary, near the end of a 15-day tour of both islands, arranged through Travelmarvel by APT. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit, regardless of the fact that we didn’t consider it to be a real castle.

The lady who gave us the guided tour (sorry I can’t remember her name, though I’m sure it was of Scottish origin), kept us entertained with the history of the castle, including some lurid stories of scandals in days long gone, and also the story of how the Barker family rescued and renovated the property.
