What to expect
  • Departing 8.30am from your Nelson accommodation this fully catered and interpretive journey into Golden Bay is a scenic feast of diverse landforms, nestled between the mountains of Kahurangi National Park and the stunningly beautiful golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park. Sole access is by a single road over Takaka Hill that leaves from almost sea-level to reach an altitude of 800 metres through a mix of mature native forest remnants, regenerating scrub, managed forest and farmland and in between alternating views of both national parks with the orchards and Tasman Bay below. There are always plenty of opportunities for photos with a short walk to a viewing platform through ancient granite and marble rock outcrops and into a quaint forest remnant or entering Ngarua cave to exit near a Hobbit film location site.  This alpine region provides spectacular views, fascinating rock formations and sink holes interspersed with grassland meadows. Descending into Golden Bay the mountains of Kahurangi loom large above the predominantly dairy farmland with distance views of the internationally renowned wildlife reserve of Sandspit over the township of Takaka which is as interesting as its inhabitants and often described as a hippy village that attracts artisans from around the world.  Close by is Te Waikoropupu Springs which are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the southern hemisphere and is the clearest water ever measured in the world. This small area surrounding the springs is wahi tapu, a place held in high cultural and spiritual regard by Maori, is steeped in gold mining history and is the perfect place to observe the many stages of re-vegetation of a unique indigenous forest that contains a huge collection of plants including mature beech and podocarp forest.       Towards the eastern side of Golden Bay the road passes through a natural hole and alongside amazing limestone formations to the Abel Tasman memorial lookout and the golden sands of Ligar Bay and Tata beach before walking into Abel Tasman National Park to see Wainui Falls, the largest waterfall in the region.                                             No visit is complete without uncovering a hidden secret. A fascinating limestone area shaped and worn by strong undersea currents before being thrust up from the ocean into a sub-tropical climate that supports a unique collection of plants, some with strange habits and incredible stories.

I did this tour with my friends over the weekend and Elissa was our host. She was very friendly and accommodating - we had such a great time. I have done several day tours in NZ and this by far the best experience we had. Totally recommend to anyone who is new to the Tasman region as Elissa has a vast knowledge about the region and covers a lot of hidden gems during this trip. Also, Zane was pretty easy to communicate and organised the trip for us last minute.

Zane is a consummate guide with an engaging manner that will transform your tour to a lasting memory of an unforgettable experience. We rate Zane as one of the best guides we’ve encountered. Golden Bay is s must-see while in NZ. We’ll never forget walking on the compact sand of Wharariki Beach and seeing the arch. We were ever so fortunate to see seal pups frolicking in a pool while being watched by one of the mothers. And Zane prepared a gourmet lunch of home-smoked salmon and turkey.

Such an easy company to deal with from booking to confirming pick up time and place.
We had one day to see as much of this area as we could, and learn a bit about this area.
The drive over revealed some fabulous views and again as we dropped into Golden Bay . Tata Beach would've been an idyllic spot for a picnic, if the weather forecast hadn't said it wouldnt be a great idea . But, a lunch at a local cafe , and a fab coffee at the Wainui falls made up for it .👍
Zane has such a huge knowledge of the area , it's flora ,fauna and Natural history and his evident enjoyment in sharing this was great. I have learnt a lot about indigenous plants and am trying my best to keep those names in my head ..
The walks to Wainui falls and up to Te Waikoropūpū spring were very interesting.
If we had more time in this area , would have loved to take a hiking tour too.
Hey ho .so much of NZ to see , so little time .
Thanks Zane for a great day

I had a great day with Noel visiting the Golden Bay. There were a few short and longer hikes, many beautiful viewpoints, very varied landscape, from forest to sea to springs and waterfalls to mountains. Noel knows every stone and plant and I found out lots of stuff. As I was alone, we had time to cover more than the usual tour does, including a beautiful waterfall hidden in the forest. Everything was included, lunch, tea, coffee, water and snacks, with a special mention for excellent cookies baked by Noel's wife. I will definitely book another tour with this company when I'm in the area again!

Noel arranged an amazing 2 1/2 days for us in Nelson, New Zealand, making it the highlight of our 2 week trip to New Zealand. He picked us up at the airport, and noted that our travel agent had basically booked us for the same area for 2 days. He therefore arranged the following really fantastic tours for us. The first day we took an all-day boat rideat Abel Tasman National Park with a very knowledgeable and kind guide named Rod Stewart (not THE Rod Stewart, but quite attractive), had a lovely lunch, then kayaked with seals, and took a very nice hike in the bush. The second day Noel arranged for us to go with Blair as our guide to Golden Bay, stopping to hike to a waterfall, walk to the clearest lake in the world, and then having lunch at Golden Bay (with lunch partially and deliciously prepared by Noel's wife). Because it looked like it was going to rain in the afternoon, Noel and Blair were really flexible and made arrangements for us to visit 2 wineries on the way back. Noel also suggested a wonderful restaurant in Nelson (Hopgood's). We felt very cared for and had a fantastic time. We would have loved to do the art tour with Noel if we'd had another day in Nelson.

I spent 3 days with Noel, on day trips from Nelson to Golden Bay, Tasman Bay, and, the very best, the "Wild Northwest". He was personable with a good sense of humor and has a vast amount of knowledge about the history, art, culture, geology, flora and fauna of the area (and NZ generally) which he shares enthusiastically but, rare in a tour guide, in my experience, also knew when just to be quiet so we could soak up the natural sounds and beauty around us. He was only stumped on one question, and I asked a lot! Comfortable van, tasty and healthy picnic lunches, ANZAC biscuits for tea breaks. Noel - please don't retire before I have a chance to get back to Nelson and go out to Wharariki Beach again!
