Fun trip down memory lane for those who remember travelling on the old steam trains, a walk back in time for the younger generation. Scenery beautifu,l and nice experience having a short break at Amamoor where you can buy coffee or lunch. We paid for the upgrade ($125) so received muffin and water onboard and lunch at The Rusty Rail Cafe after the trip. Also included reserved seating. Perhaps upgrade a little expensive, but all to a good cause. Pauline, or guide, was very friendly and the locomotive and carriages beautifully restored. Food at cafe was really tasty.

Highly recommend this trip, we upgraded to the premium ticketing To Amamoor and had our own personal booth seating Which included on board morning tea and then lunch back in the cafe. Our host in the carriage was outstanding. The staff were so professional & attentive. Well done to all the team that pulled together a magical experience for our family. We will never forget it! Thank you 👏

Last night friends & I went on the Fire & Steam Mary Valley Rattler trip from Gympie to Amamoor. What a toot-toot hoot! The old train was is a beauty and the volunteer staff really make the trip a night to remember.
This was the first sunset trip to Amamoor and the food options for dinner need to be improved on. Maybe a few more options, or more organized so they did not run out of food. Also extra seating is needed as the turn out of locals filled all the tables and chairs before the train even arrived, leaving no table seating for the train guests.
All in all a great evening, we travelled up from Brisbane for the trip and it was well worth it.

Husband & I suffered incredible heartburn after eating the patty burgers at the Mary Rattler Cafe.. He had the Rattler beef patty burger, and I had the Vegie patty burger - which was perfectly shaped & crumbed, so I instantly suspected that it was a poor quality mass-produced product; the severe heartburn confirmed this. For $15 per burger (no extras) we expected gourmet ingredients. We had to pay $9 extra for a side of fries. We recommend you try your luck across the road at SoMa SoMa Cafe instead.
The train ride was excellent however, and our carriage guide Lorie was fantastic & full of energy.
Also recommend that you take the Sunday journey for the extra station stop at Dagun, and bring cash for the stalls & buskers who do a great presentation at all of the station stops.

Terrible service. It was a busy day, granted, but the behaviour that was displayed was disappointing.

Arrived and a frankly unpleasant employee says "hello" and straight away tells us the prices for the club car...and nothing else. I fully understand that this is sales but simply going through the most expensive option is not reflecting well on a not-for-profit business. The prices were also questionable for what is more or less a train ride to some towns.

Asked for two chai lattes at the Cafe...after standing there for a considerable minute without any acknowledgement of our existence. I will grant them that yes it was indeed a busy day but a minute standing at the counter without at least an acknowledgement is unacceptable.

Now, the Chai's. Two mediums. The product itself was somewhat satisfactory. However, as time was ticking to get on the train, they weren't ready. We also purchased a muffin, however again this took a while. One Chai out of the two was received and when enquired about the other I was called "lovey" and told that they will be ready soon. I was handed two small Chai's (they had ran out of medium cups, somewhat strange considering they should be prepared for a public holiday) and told they were equal to a medium. Thus, I was also expected to board a train with three cups in my hands (my accomplice was holding other items). The service was unacceptable as it wasn't what was asked for and we had more or less five minutes before the train left to find our seats. We were refunded in full and took the two small chai's for free.

The ride itself is slow, meandering and uneventful. There aren't as many views as one would expect and you spend far too much time at the destinations there. It is all largely a sales pitch rather than anything else.

I would also like to question the business's decision to sell alcohol at 10AM in the morning on a train ride.

Overall a disappointing trip. The ride itself was boring, the views were limited, and the attitude received from the employees is unacceptable. It isn't as much of a trip as one might expect.

the train trip was great, we upgraded to the VIP on the day,
Would not recommend this as you pay a hell of a lot more for a cheese platter in a comfier seat.
I must have read it wrong when it said lunch at the cafe in the run down of the VIP.
The lunch at the cafe which cost us extra was not worth the money and took a long time to get as we were told it would bewailing for us??

My wife and i love train rides and wanted to do this trip for our first wedding anniversary.
We were super excited and got there early to check out the gift shop and get snacks and drinks for the trip. The gift shop is pretty good, but the cafe is really expensive ($3.50 for a can of coke, and $3.50 for a tiny packet of chips).
We get on the train and the trip starts, the gentleman that supervised our carriage asked everyone their names, where they are from and if they have any birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions that they would like announced over the P.A. My wife and i (female couple) say it's our first wedding anniversary, and yes please to announcing it as long as no one is offended. He said that no one would be offended.
In the meantime we arrive at Amamoor and watch the train get turned around and ordered some food. The cafe only made half of our order and tried giving it to another customer, and because we were waiting for the cafe (and ended up just getting refunded) we were 2 mins late back to the train. We apologised and explained and the train staff just glared at us and sarcastically said "it's fine".
We were feeling a bit down about the situation, but tried to enjoy the ride to Dagun and back to Gympie.
Then someone starting announcing the birthdays and special occasions over the P.A but did not announce our anniversary. I was really upset.
Maybe the website should announce on their website that they are not queer friendly to prevent the need for homophobia.
The train ride was ok, the windows are very small so you can't see alot, but what you can see is beautiful. The gentleman who supervised our carriage was lovely. We would have loved the train ride if we weren't deliberately ignored based on us being a gay couple. I respect people's opinions and if you are against gays, that's your opinion and thats fine. But to be asked if we want it announced and then deliberately being ignored was hurtful, rude and ruined our weekend.

Dear moaner84 It is with deep disappointment and surprise that we read your review. The café at Amamoor is a privately owned business, we will pass on your comments to them. Our volunteer team make the effort to celebrate special occasions and inform our passengers of where people come from with on board announcements. If your special occasion was not mentioned I can assure you that was an oversight. We have celebrated weddings, anniversaries and special events with many of those being same sex couples. We welcome everyone to the Mary Valley Rattler as guests, volunteers or our paid staff. The General Manager Mary Valley Rattler

Sunday morning started with gathering friends and family to embark on an old fashioned adventure boarding the Mary Vally Rattler. Settling into our carraiges with tiny cardboard tickets, the loud banter filled our ears. We excitedly wait for the whistle to signal our departure. An array of beverages offered and enjoyed as we anticipate our next stop at a quaint town. Beautifully stunning countryside to view at the relaxed pace of the train. Locals waving excitedly as we pass by. Thank you Mary Valley Rattler for letting us revisit a bygone era.

A step back in time for a few hours.
Starting with the beautifully restored Gympie railway station, and Leonie who greeted us with our little card tickets, and boarding information. Once on board Ross, our train conductor, punched our tickets, then spent time chatting to all the passengers. The personal commentary was a highlight as the train wound it’s way thru the picturesque Mary Valley.
A lot of work has gone into restoring the engines and carriages, they look great. Of course the steam engine was the ‘hero’ when it arrived, with kids of all ages smiling and rushing to take photos.
The volunteers obviously love their trains, and it shows, everyone we encountered was clearly enjoying themselves.
And they even sell Choo Choo Bars, I haven’t seen those for years!
Oh, and keep an eye out for the locals waving at the passing train.

This was a highlight of our holiday, & I’m still smiling.

A wonderful experience from the warm welcome to the great lunch at the cafe. We had the Premium package which included our own compartment, morning tea, very individualised attention from the crew and a lovely lunch waiting for us when we returned to Gympie Station.

The whole process is so well organised. It was interesting to watch the engine being turned around at Amamoor, and the entertainment at Dagan Station was a bonus.

Well done to George who had his first go at providing the on board commentary- a star in the making!

Thanks to all at Mary Valley Rattler for a special day
